Putin Fires New Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile at Ukraine Amid Escalating Tensions

In a significant escalation of hostilities, the Kremlin launched a new intermediate-range ballistic missile at Ukraine, a direct response to Kyivโ€™s recent use of American and British missiles. Russian President Vladimir Putin made the announcement during a televised address, asserting that the new missile, named the Oreshnikโ€”Russian for โ€œhazelnut treeโ€โ€”is capable of flying at ten times the speed of sound and can evade U.S. air defense systems. He warned that the missile could also target any ally of Ukraine that supports the use of weapons against Russia.

Putinโ€™s remarks indicated a shift in Russiaโ€™s willingness to retaliate against perceived threats from Ukraine and its Western allies. โ€œWe believe that we have the right to use our weapons against military facilities of the countries that allow to use their weapons against our facilities,โ€ he declared, marking his first comments since the Biden administration authorized Ukraine to utilize U.S. ATACMS missiles against designated targets within Russia.

Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh confirmed that the missile launched was an experimental type, based on Russiaโ€™s RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile system. Heightened concerns were expressed as the missile can carry either conventional or nuclear warheads. The U.S. government was informed about the impending launch through nuclear risk reduction channels.

The missile targeted a well-known missile factory in Dnipro, Ukraineโ€™s central city, and was reportedly launched in retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on southern Russia that resulted in significant damage to a Russian ammunition depot and casualties among security personnel. The Ukrainian air force attributed the missile launch to Russiaโ€™s Astrakhan region on the Caspian Sea.

Putinโ€™s announcement follows a week of heightened tensions, underscored by the U.S. easing restrictions on Ukraineโ€™s use of longer-range missiles. In his address, Putin signaled a potential escalation of military action, stating that action may be taken if aggressive actions continue, and he cautioned Western leaders about the implications of involving their forces against Moscow.

In a notable change from previous tactics, Putin claimed that Russia would provide advance warnings prior to future strikes with the Oreshnik to enable civilian evacuationsโ€”a shift that had not occurred during prior attacks. This adaptation raises questions about the Kremlinโ€™s strategy as it continues to respond to Ukraineโ€™s increasing capabilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted promptly to the Dnipro missile strike, characterizing the attack as evidence of Russiaโ€™s fear and aggression. Analysts suggest that the missile strike serves multiple purposes, signaling not only to Ukraine but also to the West the capabilities of Russian weaponry and the potential for a deeper military competition.

Military experts pointed out that while modern intermediate-range ballistic missiles are less precise than cruise missiles, their speed and lethality pose severe challenges for interception. Some analysts remain skeptical of Putinโ€™s claims, suggesting he could be using the situation to provoke a response from the West, contrasting with the choices of a more rational and measured tactical approach.

This recent sequence of events underscores a critical moment in the ongoing conflict, as both sides prepare for potential further escalation. The consequences of these developments may reshape the dynamics of the war, with both military and diplomatic implications reverberating through the region and beyond.
