Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Army Command, conducted a comprehensive review of the security situation and the counter-infiltration grid in North Kashmir today. The visit, marked by a display of advanced military technology and strategic oversight, underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to enhancing security along the Line of Control (LoC) amid rising infiltration threats.
During his tour, Lt Gen Sharma witnessed a “Battle Enabler” display, showcasing the integration of cutting-edge technologies into the Army’s operations. The three-tiered robotic counter-infiltration grid, recently deployed along the LoC in Tangdhar village of Kupwara district, was a focal point of the review.
This system includes advanced surveillance equipment such as radars, thermal imaging sites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and obstacle systems like mines, complemented by ground troops conducting routine ambushes and patrols.
The Northern Command, under Lt Gen Sharma’s leadership, has emerged as a pioneer in military innovation. A June 2025 update noted that the command became the first to appoint a Command Subedar Major, a move aimed at strengthening communication between leadership and ranks. The images from the visit depict troops in camouflage, equipped with modern gear, standing alongside a helicopter, symbolizing the Army’s enhanced operational readiness.
Lt Gen Sharma, an infantry officer with over three decades of experience, including key operations like Pawan, Meghdoot, Rakshak, and Parakram, lauded the ranks for their innovation and adoption of niche technologies to counter contemporary threats. Internal Army data cited in strategic analyses indicate a 30% rise in infiltration attempts since 2023, making these technological advancements critical.
The scenic backdrop of Kashmir’s rugged terrain served as a reminder of the historical evolution of the Northern Army, re-established in 1972, from its origins in 1908.The visit also included a ceremonial moment where Lt Gen Sharma pinned a badge on a soldier, recognizing the dedication of the troops.
As the region prepares for heightened security measures, the Indian Army continues to evolve, integrating advanced systems like the Smart Fence System to bolster border surveillance, ensuring peace and stability in this strategically vital area.
