In a significant advancement for India’s strategic defense capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight test of the Agni-Prime intermediate-range ballistic missile from a novel rail-based mobile launcher system. This marks the first instance of such a launch utilizing a platform integrated with the national railway network, enabling rapid deployment across vast distances.
The test, carried out on September 25, 2025, at the Integrated Test Range in Balasore, Odisha, demonstrated the missile’s precision performance and next-generation features. The Agni-Prime, also known as Agni-P, is a nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a strike range of up to 2,000 kilometers, positioning it as a key asset in India’s deterrence strategy against regional threats. The rail-based launcher innovation allows for discreet and swift transportation of the missile system via India’s extensive railway infrastructure, reducing vulnerability to detection and increasing response times in potential conflict scenarios. This development aligns with India’s broader efforts under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to strengthen its missile arsenal, which includes variants like Agni-I through Agni-V, each tailored for specific ranges and payloads.
