7 Things Soldiers Wish Civilians Knew

7 Things Soldiers Wish Civilians Knew
  1. Basic Training Sucks:

I wish civilians knew how gruelling the basic training is and how truly amazing the Drill Instructors (or seniors) manage it. This said, don’t ask what it is like to be trained in the Special Forces. Read more about it here. Ask your NCC friend or a friend in the military about it and they will tell you.

  1. We too crave for rest:

Most civilians haven’t learned that it is possible to catch a power nap standing up and military people do it whenever they find time, anywhere. People in the military get to have only about five hours of sleep. They don’t come into work on Monday and brag about lost because it is not to be complained about. Civilians playing video games might think being bored is a fate worse than death. But a man who works for a living knows that a chance to relax is worth something.

  1. “Seniors” are not like the ones in civilian world:

Civilians see their juniors as a newbie for their first few years and they are just the ‘Seniors’. But in the military, it means a lot. Seniors in the military are your teacher, they are your mentor, they are your parents, they are your support till you, yourself get some juniors to teach to. Everything passed on from a senior gets more modified and better till the time it reaches your junior and then their junior. And when the time comes, seniors are the ones who will be harsh on you from rough punishments to shoving that rifle in your as**ole (not literally, of course).

  1. The better your turn-out, the more respect you get:

Respect starts with turn-out in the military. Forget about crushed jeans and yesterday’s polished shoes that it will do today or the latest fashion of hairstyles. A civilian may seem interested in it but in the military, it’s like disrespecting your seniors. And when you do that you know the outcome (see point above). An ironed shirt isn’t to impress the ladies; it’s the starting point for situational awareness.

  1. Co-workers in military are much closely bonded:

The bonds you develop with people in the military are very close, especially co-cadets you get trained with or get deploy with. It’s just so different than anything else that you need to experience it to feel it. They are not your brothers and at the same time, they are neither like your civilian friends. You just know them on a different level.

  1. It’s not done until it’s not complete:

There’s no policy of ‘half-baked is half done’ in the military. It is not completely done until it is not completely done. Period. And it requires undivided concentration not only to be careful that it is done right but also to make sure that it is done right.

  1. We are normal people too:

Except that we get our asses kicked a lot of times during training, we jump off planes behind enemy lines, we get to use a lot of bullets to kill, we stay away from family for months, we are frequent travellers and get to go to places no one have ever before, yes we too are just like you.

Ruchi Sharma, one of the 350 women who have literally changed the face of the Indian Army, is the daughter of an army officer who passed out from the same Officers’ Training Academy in Chennai that his daughter did. 6 Sacrifices Mothers In The Military Make

6 Sacrifices Mothers In The Military Make

Motherhood comes in all types. While someone’s mom is a teacher and other’s a doctor having an awesome career experience, a mom in the military has something else to sing. Women as mothers have for long been serving the Indian Army in non-combat roles.

Being a mom in the military comes with a unique set of challenges in itself. It often requires sacrifices like being away from family or single parenting, dealing with emotional stress, and a special kind of love for the sake of the country.

In India however, there are very few instances where both the parents of a child are in the military to keep them apart for months at a go. But at the same time, a military mother could be anyone – mothers whose children are in the military, mothers whose dads are in the military or mothers whose spouses are in the military.

On this occasion of mother’s day, we bring the unique qualities and sacrifice that a mother of a service member or a mother as a soldier makes, which sets them apart from being too mainstream:

  1. Strength:

Being a military mom brings out supernatural strengths in oneself.  They are required to keep their strengths when there hasn’t been any contact with service member for months; and not being able to talk to a child for long can only be better understood by a mother. It’s a heavy task and if it were someone other, they would have broken down by now. None can match this better than a military mom.

  1. Courage:

“Everyone has it”, you say? Think about this: leaving your children at home and being apart from them for months, or watch your husband or children deploy at the borders. The military is a lifelong commitment of putting oneself in service knowing that it is harmful, or that their spouse or child has a fatal job to do. And for that, a lot of courage is required and military moms have mountains of them.

  1. Preparedness for the worst:

Ask a mother whose son is always playing with live bullets that what is worse. Imagine what their stress level is like, and you will understand what ‘being prepared for the worst’ means. The silence from a war zone could mean nothing, or it could mean something at the same time, and no one ever knows which.

  1. Pride:

Lady Officers are filled with a deep desire to serve their country. They are proud, always. They proudly serve, proudly support, and proudly sacrifice their loved ones or sometimes themselves for the cause of the nation. And pride even at the time when their service member comes home wrapped in the tricolour.

  1. Patience:

Waiting is a lot of time spent as a mother of a service member. You know you can spend months away from home, waiting for your service member children to return home. But it’s all worth it when you know what they have been doing out there. Patience; It’s a virtue military mothers have in abundance.

  1. Making the Ultimate Sacrifice:

Too many mothers have said goodbye to their loved ones over the years, permanently sacrificing a piece of their hearts for a cause their children stood valiantly for. While other families get to enjoy weekends together, many military families finds a large void with this.

Let us all take a moment and appreciate the silent support from all the mothers in the military. This mother’s day, let us thank them for what they have done and are doing which no other mother can.

Still here? Come on, go now…

New Naval Detachment Comes Up At Lakshadweep

0
Naval Detachment inaugurated at Lakshadweep

The Indian Navy on 26th April established a new Naval Detachment (NAVDET) at Androth islands of Lakshadweep. The Naval base is aimed at enhancing the Navy’s reach and surveillance of Arabian Sea waters.

It was inaugurated by Vice-Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command.

The charge of the detachment has been given to OIC Lt Cdr Angom B Singh, who in turn will function under the naval officer-in-charge (Lakshadweep and Minicoy Island). The setting up of the detachment in a time bound manner has been possible due to concerted efforts by the teams at L&M islands, with the support of all agencies.

Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands occupy a strategic location in the Arabian Sea. A number of shipping lanes pass close to these islands which connect Asia and Europe. Setting up of a Naval Detachment at Androth Island will enhance the Navy’s reach and surveillance, and contribute significantly to strengthen maritime security and stability.

Suitable ships are also being based at the islands to provide enhanced surveillance and immediate response capability.

As part of larger measures the Naval Detachment at Kavaratti was commissioned as a naval establishment, INS Dweeprakshak, in 2012.

A number of infrastructure facilities at naval units located on Kavaratti, Minicoy, Agatti and Androth islands are also being progressively upgraded, boosting the Indian Navy’s reach in the Sea and increase the efficiency of operations to be performed in near future.

Assam Rifles Commandant Arrested For Involvement In Gold Robbery

Col Jasjit Singh

This news is reported by IndianExpress on May 6th 2016 as mentioned below

Commandant of the Aizawl-based 39th battalion of the Assam Rifles Col Jasjit Singh was on Thursday arrested by the police in Aizawl for allegedly being one of the major players in the highway robbery involving Rs 14.5 crore worth of gold bars smuggled from Myanmar.

The police alleged that Singh ordered his men, armed with sophisticated weapons, to waylay a consignment of smuggled gold biscuits in the southern outskirts of Aizawl city on the night of December 14 last year.

The incident came to light when driver of the vehicle Lalnunfela filed an FIR at the Aizawl police station on April 21 alleging his vehicle was waylaid by armed people from the 39 Assam Rifles who decamped with 52 gold biscuits worth Rs 14.5 crore.

Lalnunfela mentioned in the FIR that he was threatened at gun point by the assailants and was asked to keep his mouth shut, and it was only after being persuaded by his friends that he decided to inform the police.

The eight Assam Rifles jawans, accused of participating in the dacoity on December 14 last and now in custody, reportedly told their interrogators that they committed the crime after receiving orders from the battalion Commandant.Col Jasjit Singh

Singh, through his lawyer, on Thursday applied for an anticipatory bail, which was rejected by the Aizawl District and Sessions Judge Lucy Lalrinthari and he was arrested in the court premises.

He was suspended by Brigadier T C Malhotra, DIG (Range), Commander of the Aizawl-based 23 Sector of the Assam Rifles today.

When contacted, Brig Malhotra, refused to comment saying the matter was “sub-judice”.

The police had constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on April 22 to investigate the matter and registered cases including dacoity, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation and dishonestly receiving property stolen in the commission of a dacoity.

The SIT has already arrested four people, including a former well-known student leader and a businessman on April 23 and 24, who were remanded to judicial custody.

11 Tricky NDA SSB Interview Questions With Answers

1
NDA SSB Interview Questions

SSB, in all, is general to every type of entry. Everyone is assessed on a common set of qualities or the OLQs. Every level of assessment is also the same in each entry type. The reason why NDA SSB stands out from the rest is due to the fact that it is a bit early for the boys. It might be the first interview of their life at that age.

While every assessment is the same and the preparation for it is the same too, here are some sample tricky NDA SSB interview questions that you might face in the interview and tips/sample answers to tackle them:

  1. Why do you want to join army/navy/air force?
  • “Indian Armed Forces is the most exciting organisation to work with because of its adventurous nature, and of course, the handsome pay perks. I would like to join the armed forces because it provides me job security, family security, respect that can only be earned in the uniform and the pride of wearing that uniform. And also I would get a chance to serve the nation and do my bit for it.”
  1. Why should I recommend you?
  • “From my point of view, I pose most of the Officer Like Qualities that an officer must have. I am responsible, socially adaptable and take initiative whenever given a chance. And that’s the most important of qualities that an officer must have. Hence, you should give me a chance to prove my points and myself by recommending me.”
  1. Why do you think you are suitable for Indian army?
  • “I have been living in the army environment since I was a child. I am not new to the stuff that happens in the army and can work in it without even posing a socializing or acclimatizing problem.” (If you are an Army brat)
  • “I find myself adventurous and ready to take risks in life. I can adapt to new situations and scenarios very easily. From my previous roles as a leader, I can also say that I have a good experience in leadership and teamwork. And army is all about it. Hence, I find me suitable for the role of an army officer.” (If you are new to army)
  1. Do you have Girl Friend/Boy Friend? Have you had sex with him/her?
  • Be Frank and confident with the IO and don’t feel too protective or shy. At the same time, don’t be too friendly or frank with him. Know your limits and stick to it.

  1. Why don’t you have a girlfriend? Are you gay?
  • You are on your own on this one.
  1. If you don’t get selected what will you do in future?
  • “I would continue my graduation and after that, I will try through CDSE/AFCAT/Other Entries. Basically I would continue my life.”
  1. What if you could never make it defence?
  • If the interviewer is asking you this question, keep one thing in mind – he is taking an interest in you and wants to recommend you. Your recommendation will now depend on this question. If you have a proper future planning, you are a green light but if say that you don’t have any plans as of now or you haven’t thought about it yet, you are a red orange light.
  1. What if I run away persuading your sister?
  • I would have better chances of getting recommended” is what I would reply if it were me. Don’t get offended by his remarks. Take it in an easy and jovial mood and reply in that mood itself.
  1. What if one morning you woke up & found that you were pregnant?
  • This question is like a template on the internet blogs titled “Tricky interview questions”. Unsure whether it’s really asked or not, here’s was the girl replied “I will be very excited and take an off, to celebrate with my husband.” As said earlier, take everything positively and in a calm and polite way. This will represent your response to your teammates and your ability to socialize.
spot_img
  1. Do you smoke? Drink?
  • Again, be frank and confident but don’t be too friendly or free with him. He’s the interviewer after all and not your friend.
  1. Do you watch P*orn? And what do you do after watching p*orn?
  • It was asked to one of my friends during TES SSB and here’s what he replied: “Yes, I do. I hit the gym right after watching p*orn because my high testosterone levels help me increase the intensity of training and I could work-out better.”

Finally, when questions are asked whose answers you don’t know, say honestly that you don’t know the answer instead of trying to fake. Do self-introspection and then reflect your true personality at SSB. That’s the only success mantra and the tool for success. Sometimes just thinking out of the box is all it takes!
