Wing Commander Sanjay Thapar VM is the man of many firsts in the field of parachuting, two of his achievements are acknowledged as world records and seven others as National Records. He was the first Indian to introduce tandem skydiving in the Air Force. As befits a sky diver, Sanjay is quite an adventurous fellow. He served in the Indian Air Force, and has been skydiving for almost 30 years. Now in his sprightly 50s (he first jumped when in his early 20s), he’s lost none of his sense of adventure: Sanjay still does around 100 jumps every year! Widely travelled, he has also pursued mountaineering, paragliding, powered parachuting, hot-air ballooning, skiing and water skiing!

I have been a national champion, and hold a few world records besides, including attempting 46 jumps in the space of three hours, and jumping with the largest Tricolour on the eve of India’s 50th anniversary of Independence, in 1997. In addition, I have over 5000 parachute jumps to my credit in India, the highest number attempted in the country. I have also competed abroad, and led all three Indian skydiving teams that have toured. With so much experience under my belt, I’ve certainly had many memorable moments as a skydiver – both in terms of excitement and emergencies! In 1996, I attempted a jump at the North Pole, and in 1991, I led the Indian team that took part in the 6th World Cup, in Jakarta, Indonesia; we had to jump out of a Hercules aircraft to a small island – dominated by forest – in the middle of the sea .
A shameful sight on the streets of Delhi. This video was shared on Twitter some time ago. A Warrant Officer of the Indian Air Force is seen as beaten up by some people on the road. If you have any further information on this video, please share here on the comments section.
This is a shameful incident happened in Delhi where few people are thrashing an IAF warrant officer who can be seen in the uniform. Hope the authority will take serious action against them.
In a shameful incident today, An IAF Warrant Officer in Uniform was dragged from his bike and assaulted by youth in #NewDelhi.
The details are being investigated, but nothing justifies assaulting a person in uniform.
This shows what kind of upbringing that some youth have got.

Attention, overweight army officers and soldiers. Unfit military men can’t stand at ease until they slim down, or else they lose their eligibility for promotions and transfers, the right to attend ceremonial functions and much more.
The army has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards obesity in its rank and file, after a sample survey of 767 soldiers last year found a third of them overweight.
The findings put a question mark on the combat-readiness of the world’s third largest army with 1.3 million personnel, saddled with aggressive neighbours.
A fight against flab has started in the army as a special order, effective from this May, says all personnel must undergo an annual “obesity evaluation examination”.
The annual confidential reports (ACRs) of officers will henceforth carry a full-size picture, instead of the previous norm of a passport-size photo, so that any bulge around the waist is visible.
Waist size will determine promotions. A certificate from the officer, who writes the ACR of the personnel to be promoted, will be sent to departments concerned.
Promotion will be held back for anybody 10% above the “ideal body weight”, until he shaped up. If the promotion order comes before the certificate is issued, he will not be allowed to wear the next rank till the commanding officer certifies that he has reached the ideal weight.
Officers downgraded for their waistlines will not be allowed to attend career advancing courses such as the one offered at Defence Services Staff College, even if they clear the entrance exams.
Army spokesperson Colonel Aman Anand said instructions for “enforcement measures to help check the menace of obesity” were sent for comments to all military commands last August.
The idea came from then army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, a fitness enthusiast who ran 10km each day, and was appalled at the increasing girth of the men under his command.
According to army officers instructions to stay fit were often issued, but seldom followed diligently and never attracted harsh punishments. The survey conducted by the defence ministry and the Indian Council of Medical Research prompted the bosses to crack the whip.
“Soldiers in forward areas tend to put on weight as the fitness regime is not followed. The fresh instructions will make people sharpen their focus to stay in top physical shape,” an officer said.
No overweight personnel can go abroad on assignments unless he is specially exempted or is a war wounded.
Besides, plump officers will not be granted reemployment either. Applications will have to be accompanied by a fitness certificate, mentioning the ideal body weight.
“These things were ignored if an officer was performing well and didn’t look fat. The army has decided to take the problem head-on as it reflects on the image of the force,” said a senior officer in the military headquarters.
Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, afflicting the armies of the US, Germany and Pakistan as well. The Indian Army is no exception, but it is striving to have a fit force with its battle against the bulge.
“He was such a boy that when he was asked to write an essay in the class he wrote that his aim was to join the Army and kill terrorists. That was the time when his other classmates did not even know what terrorists or the army was,” his classmate and childhood friend Sushant said.
Captain Mahajan was hit by four bullets when he stormed into the building (Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute) to take on the terrorists who have been hiding thereafter attacking a CRPF convoy.

He was the only son of a well known Udhampur educationalist and retired principal Dev Raj Gupta and Asha Rani. It was reportedly Mahajan’s childhood dream to join the defence forces and fight for his country.
He always wanted to join the army and filled all the forms by himself. He had this passion to be in the army and we never objected to it. His passion was to serve the country said his father.
Selected for National Defence Academy training in 2010, Captain Mahajan had joined the Indian Armyagainst the wishes of his parents.
On Jan 26, the Republic Day, Captain Mahajan’s WhatsApp status read, “so jaegi kal lipatkar tirange ke sath, yeh deshbhakti hai sahab, tarikhon per jagti hai” (Tomorrow, patriotism will also sleep, with the folding of the National Flag, it only wakes up on few dates).
His neighbours said that Captain Mahajan was always eager to fight terrorists. He had rejoined his brothers-in-arms in the Valley only 10 days ago. The martyred Captain was an expert in judo and karate.
The unmarried Captain Mahajan was all of 26. A resident of Udhampur, the young soldier took four bullets and was removed to the 92 Base Hospital of the Army. He succumbed to injuries.

Finding that the Indian Navy had discriminated against a Patiala boy, thus depriving him of the officer’s post, the Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the Union defence ministry to allow him to join the Army. He would join with same seniority which other candidates who took the test with him and had already joined the training academy.
The practice says, a candidate on being declared medically unfit for the Navy if his eyes are found to be 6/9, can be considered for the Army where such lower vision is permissible. In the present case, the naval headquarters failed to forward his case to the Army headquarters because of which petitioner was not considered for joining the Army.
While issuing directions, the HC also ordered that even if a vacancy is not available the Indian Army would appoint him “by deduction from future vacancies or by creation of a supernumerary post”.
Justice Rajiv Narain Raina of the HC passed these orders while allowing the petition filed by Vishu Jain, a resident of Patiala. The petitioner had appeared for the selection for 10+2 (Technical Entry Scheme) 2015, for joining officer’s rank in the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala. He had qualified all the necessary tests, including the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. However, both of his eyes were found to be 6/9 making him unfit to join Indian Navy.
Accepting his disqualification for Navy, the petitioner relied on administrative precedents where candidates like him were inducted in the Indian Army for appointment under the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme Course 33. He referred the cases of Abhishek Singh, resident of Jhansi, Madhya Pradesh; and Rishab Mathur resident of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. They were co-aspirants with him for appointment in the Indian Navy but were considered for Army after being downgraded in medical test due to vision problem.
The naval authorities had to send the application to the Army for considering the candidature of the petitioner but failed to do so in Jain’s case.
In his petition before the HC, the petitioner alleged that because of negligence of the Navy, he was not only deprived from joining the 10+2 (Technical Entry Scheme) 33-course but also missed for 34-course that commenced training in January 2016.
In its detailed judgment released last week, the court held that the action of the Indian Navy in not transmitting dossier of the petitioner and lazing over the matter and prolonging the medical examination till final conclusion is “unfair, arbitrary and unconstitutional”.
“It must be remembered that candidates for 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme Course were fresh out of school and would not be expected to guard their rights as adults could do with experience of life. The authorities could not express their helplessness in not concluding the case and transmitting the docket with necessary certification before the cut-off date and offering reasonable opportunity to the petitioner of induction into the Indian Army,” observed the court.
The Border Security Force (BSF) today sacked constable Tej Bahadur Yadav after a three-month long proceeding at a summary court martial held in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district.
Bahadur’s dismissal came after a court of inquiry found that he had damaged the “image of the BSF” when he uploaded a video clip on the “substandard food” on social media, triggering an uproar.
The trooper was facing the inquiry on various charges, including indiscipline. His plea for voluntary retirement was also rejected by the BSF authorities.
On January 9 this year, the BSF constable had uploaded the video, complaining about the “poor quality of food” provided to the troopers.

Indian army official social media accounts have posted a notice where they have confirmed that few people are cheating serving and retired army personnel in the name of AGIF which stands for Army Group Insurance Fund
Certain firms/ individuals are cheating serving/ retired army personnel by claiming to be agents of AGIF or having a tie up with AGIF.
