Subhashini Vasanth Wins Neerja Bhanot Award25 Mar 1967 he was bornIn OfficeWe miss you
Col Vasanth – a true idealist and a man of peace – was proud to be an officer of the Indian Army till the very end. He was no armchair idealist. He read widely about military histories and strategy and would take great care to analyse the inscrutable choices that armies have made in history. He attended many seminars and talks, and listened with care to the many different voices of our nation. He was genuinely motivated by sacrifice. He was excited about commanding the 9 Maratha LI and thrilled that he would be joining them on the frontline. For Vasanth, his lifetime commitment was simple – his word and his honour. His personal life always came second.
In 1997, during a discussion with his wife, Subhashini, a Bharatnatyam dancer, Vasanth expressed that there are a lot of people speaking about the soldiers but not many who try to depict the life of the women in their lives. He felt that she should use her talent and her experiences to tell the story of the army wife. This gave the birth to The Silent Front, an organization dedicated to the widows of martyrs. Mrs Suhasini (original text) will receive the award bestowed on the gallant officer from the President.
Note – the CI Operation was on 29-30 July, when he was wounded and evacuated to a hospital where he martyred on 31 July.
The principal role of the Indian Naval Academy is to impart basic and orientation training to all officer entrants of the Navy and Coast Guard, other than Special Duties List officers. The aim is to develop the trainees morally, mentally and physically and to imbibe in them the high ideals of loyalty, valour and patriotism in order to provide the service with officers who are dedicated to a career of Naval Service and have potential for future development to assume the highest responsibility of leadership.
Vision of Indian Naval Academy
The Indian Naval Academy has been developed as a national prestigious project and is the ‘Cradle for Leadership’ in the Indian Navy. It is unique in concept and design and stands out as an outstanding monument.
The ab-initio training imparted at the academy will ensure that every officer who passes out through its portals will be leaders worthy of trust and confidence that the nation has reposed in them. It will also establish bridges of friendship across the ocean by training personnel from friendly foreign countries.
CDS Exam result was declared recently and many candidates who have cleared the exam are confused about the whole SSB interview procedure. In this article we are going to cover frequently asked questions by candidates who cleared the CDS written exam and also make you aware of the SSB interview registration procedure.
In the result published by the UPSC following paragraph says
All the candidates who have successfully qualified in the written exam are required to register themselves online on the Indian Army Recruiting website joinindianarmy.nic.in within two weeks of announcement of written result. The successful candidates would then be allotted Selection Centres and dates, of SSB interview which shall be communicated on the registered e-mail ID. Any candidate who has already registered earlier on the site will not be required to do so. In case of any query/Login problem, e-mail be forwarded to [email protected].
How to register?
Visit joinindianarmy.nic.in and sign up like any other portal.
If you have already registered with the website, do not make another account and login to your account to check further.
Once logged in you can select your SSB date for CDS exam.
Note:
The same was informed last time also but later joinindianarmy asked candidates not to register and they got the call up letter directly in their registered email.
Candidates must keep checking their registered email IDs with the UPSC. As CDS is a UPSC entry, they email the call letters.
Joinindianarmy website is down and it will open on 24 Mar 2017. Hopefully some work is going on in it related to the registration.
Candidates who cleared it for IAF and Navy should check the respective websites for any information available.
You will get the SSB call for only one service and based on your priority, irrespective of how many services you are selected for.
Candidates who have cleared the written test need to calm down because CDS is handled by UPSC and the process is very smooth, if you are not sure about anything ask us or any experienced candidate.
Focus more on preparation rather than waiting for the call letter which you will get eventually.
You don’t need to do wrong registration in hurry, make sure you confirm from someone before registering.
Till further notice, all successfully candidates are required to register online as mentioned in the result.
Latest Update:
We asked joinindianarmy regarding registration for CDS exam on the portal and they told us that it is not required for CDS
BSF Jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav who became an internet personality of sorts after his viral Facebook video showed the poor quality of food that was being served. The Border Security Force Jawan who took the nation on a storm was back in news as rumours of his death began spreading like a wildfire on the social media.
A picture collage of the Jawan had been circulating on Twitter and Facebook which shows a martyred Jawan’s picture beside Tej Bahadur’s photo with the message that the BSF Jawan had been killed. The picture that is doing the rounds on the internet claims that Tej Bahadur had gone missing after exposing the corruption and thievery in Indian Army and has been killed. BSF jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav alleges ‘mental torture’ in a new video; urges PM Modi to intervene.
However, this image is another work of internet death hoax that has gone viral. The picture used to spread the rumour is said to be of one of the twelve martyred CRPF jawan from Chattisgarh. A picture collage of the two Jawans has been doing the rounds in Twitter and one particular user captioned the picture, “Looks like Indian BSF Jawan, Tej Bahadur Yadav who exposed Indian Army thievery & corruption & then went missing, has been killed. #Kashmir.”

Annapurna Dattatraya Bothate’s long-standing dream to join the Indian Army will finally come true after she stood third in the all-India NCC merit list special entry (women).
The 25-year-old is a national-level Rugby player and has been playing the sport since 2010. Earlier, Bothate has represented the country at the Asian Games from 2010 to 2014. She has also been part of the Rugby World Cup qualifiers team and was a silver medallist at the Kerala nationalgames in 2015.
Speaking to TOI, Bothate said, “It has been my childhood dream to become an army officer. I could not clear the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview in the last two attempts but this time I made it.”
The NCC merit constitutes 48 women from all over the country, whereas only five vacancies are there for this particular entry. Since her school days, Bothate was fascinated with the armed forces and joined the NCC while she was studying in the ninth standard. “The NCC training has helped me keep my spirit alive for so long. This was my last attempt and I had to clear it to achieve my goal, ” she added.
She will be joining the Officers Training Academy (OTA) Chennai on March 31 and her training will start from the first week of April.
Bothate’s father worked as an office assistant with Tata Motors but passed away in January 2015. Her mother Bharti retired from the State Transport department last year. She said, “Annapurna’s father wanted to see her as an Army officer. Her selection would be a tribute to her father.”
Despite the fact that the Indian Army is mainly male-dominated, Bothate prefers it over the Air Force and the Navy. “I am pretty confident that the Indian Army will give me the right opportunity in the future,” she added.
“My name is Major General Somnath Jha. I retired from the Indian Army on the 30th of September, 2016; and after 18 days, on the 19th of October I sat on my cycle saddle and took off to pay my homage to all the martyred soldiers of of our country since Independence. I am paying this homage by cycling two minutes for each fallen hero. And since the number of such heroes is close to 21,000, I have given myself the mandate of cycling 42,000 minutes on this journey. Another mandate I laid down for myself is to route myself through all the 29 states of our great nation because our fallen heroes come from every corner of the country. This is my symbolic homage to my brethren who didn’t have the privilege of retiring as I did. They made the supreme sacrifice before that.”
I hear myself speak these words (or words to this effect) day after day after day for past five months or so, at each new place I arrive at and interact with new people and media persons.
I seriously didn’t fully understand the enormity and sacredness of the task I had set for myself. This realization grows with each passing day; some of it on my own, some of it comes from the people who I interact with enroute. But strangely, instead of daunting me, I find my resolve only getting stronger! The 42,000 minutes, when extrapolated to distance and time, translates to somewhere between 10 and 12,000 kms over a six to seven month period! To be done alone on my cycle on Indian roads.
Mine is a long and arduous journey. I had even dared to think (during my initial planning stages) that I could handle the cycling as well as the logistics. Chitra, my wife, came on board and took charge of all liaison and logistics. “Why should I sit in one place and wonder where you are and what’s happening with you,” was her rationale. This made sense. But now the logistics had to be expanded with a backup car accompanying. I could now think of carrying a reserve cycle and a larger range of spares. And wherever we halted for the night Chitra would make sure that there was an essence of ‘home’ in that place. We did have some frustrating moments finding a suitable car to hire along with a driver who would stick with us all the seven months of the journey. But once that was settled, Chitra (along with a host of her Facebook friends) has made the logistics seamless.
This is a personal homage journey. I’m not supported or sponsored by any organization. And initially I was even skeptical about any publicity being accorded. But my last Corps commander insisted on having a ‘curtain raiser’ interaction with the local media, so I went through with that. In hindsight, it was indeed a pretty good idea. I’m glad he had insisted and organized it. As the journey progressed, and more media (primarily local and vernacular) began envisaging interest, I slowly began to realize that the story of my journey needs to be told to the world, as it unfolds. The nation’s citizens, if not the world, must know of the ethos of camaraderie that forms the bedrock of any military, especially ours. After all, I’m undertaking this homage journey in the memory and honour of my fallen comrades. I’m not on a publicity seeking mission nor on an adventure trip, nor on any record setting endeavour. Neither is my journey a touristy or a socializing trip. Mine is a kind of a pilgrimage, to honour our fallen heroes. This spirit of committed camaraderie must be upheld at all costs by us in the military, in spite of the pressures of a changing eco-societal environment around us. This is what sets us apart, the grain from the chaff.
As the journey unfolds, the statistics keep changing. The numbers, regarding distance covered, states traversed, number of homages paid and so on, keep adding. The remarkable thing is that a strong support and understanding of my mission, from all quarters (especially the unexpected), keeps growing. Ever so often, we’ve had complete strangers (until then) come forward with their unconditional help and support to make the journey possible. To my most pleasant surprise, support and help that have come from private individuals, local government organizations and departments, police organizations, citizens’ groups have been overwhelming. Their ability to emotionally relate to the sentiments and the enormity of my homage journey has been most astonishing, and at the same time, very reassuring. And it includes just about everyone; farmers, wage earners, dhaba wallas, truck drivers, lower level government officials, policemen, passerby, rural home makers, businessmen, veterans, shopkeepers, teachers, young boys and girls in the NCC and of course the military. How reassuring this has been! I have come to believe that virtually every citizen in our beautiful country genuinely identifies with causes such as mine. And that they are as patriotic as anyone else, and emotionally connected to matters concerning the military. They are usually so caught up with the struggle of their daily lives and also with the lack of appropriate leadership, they are normally unable to give vent to their sentiments and intentions.
As I write this piece, I am on the 153rd Day of my homage journey, having logged over 9000 kms and over 17,700 homages. I finish my (rather long) journey through Rajasthan (the 25th State) in another two days to enter Punjab. Four more states to traverse and 3,300 homages to clock and I’ll be done. The end is in sight, but not without a tinge of sadness; this beautiful journey of homage that has seeped down to my bone, will conclude at the Amar Jawan Jyoti (India Gate) at New Delhi on the 19th of April 2017. My personal homage to our fallen heroes will be done … at least for the moment.
Rest well, be at peace, my heroic fallen comrades. You have not died in vain.
If I were asked just a year ago, if it was possible for a retired General to cycle across the length and breadth of India to pay homage to our martyrs, I would have had my reservations. But now the learning has been reinforced: if something seems daunting or even impossible on the face of it, it gets done if only you take the first step!
The Indian Air Force has come under heavy criticism for denying study leave to a corporal-rank airman on the grounds that only officers were entitled to such a privilege.
The airman had sought the leave for pursuing M Tech from IIT Dhanbad after topping the entrance exams. The incident comes to light at a time when the armed forces are facing issues of strained relations between officer and soldier amid a growing demand for change in the archaic British-era rules and ensure equal benefits for officers and jawans.
Taking a strong view against the “discriminatory policy”, the Delhi High Court in its February 20 order reprimanded the air force and asked it to frame fair rules for both officers and men.
A corporal is designated as non-commissioned personnel in IAF. “Don’t deny them equality by refusing them leave to pursue higher studies only on the grounds of rank and status,” the bench headed by Justice Indira Bannerjee said in the order. Ankur Chhibber, the counsel for corporal BK Verma, told Mail Today that Verma had sought permission for pursuing his M Tech from IIT Dhanbad, after appearing for the graduate aptitude test in engineering exam with permission from Air Force authorities.
DIFFICULT TO APPRECIATE RATIONALE: DELHI HC
“However, that was rejected by Air Force on grounds that there was no provision for sending air force jawans on study leave and this was allowed only for officers,” Chhibber said.
The IAF grants leave of maximum 28 months to its officers who have completed 15 years of service for pursuing courses in institutions which are approved and certified by it and the knowledge gained from them can be utilised by the service.
Aggrieved by the decision of the senior authorities despite recommendation by several of his officers to allow him to proceed for the course, Verma approached the Delhi High Court. Verma’s counsel said the airman was a meritorious student and had completed his B Tech degree while carrying out his duties as a soldier in the force and had secured a gold medal in his B Tech course which was quite an achievement.
The Delhi High Court bench took a favourable view of the petition observing that the Air Force should appreciate the intellect and erudition of the soldier and encourage him by giving him opportunity to enhance his knowledge skills. The court stated that it is very difficult to appreciate the rationale behind differentiation between officer and airmen in the matter of granting study leave.
“It is, in our view, preposterous to assume that only officers would have aspirations of improving their knowledge and educational qualifications, and not the airmen,” the two-member bench said. The court observed that the discrimination between officers and airmen for grant of study leave was “totally discriminatory and violation of the article 14 of the Indian constitution”.
Setting aside the Air Force order to deny study leave to the soldier, the High Court ordered it to frame “non-discriminatory leave rules and reconsider the application of the soldier for study leave in light of the observations made (by the court).” Verma, according to his lawyer, has going through his first semester in Dhanbad as he was granted interim relief by the court. The Air Force is now considering whether it should go against the court order in the Supreme Court or not. Generally, Air Force is considered to be more lenient than the Navy and Army while dealing with its men.
From October 2015 to February 2016, Captain Pawan Kumar led his troop in four successful operations that resulted in the elemination of six terrorists. On 20 February 2016, still recovering from his past injury and contrary to the medical advice, Captain Pawan Kumar led his troop during Pampore operation at Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite grave personal risk the officer conducted close reconnaissance of the target building and decided to conduct building intervention operation – a high risk option to obviate collateral damage. Leading from the front, he reached the top floor, firing into the door and window of the room in which the terrorists were holed up.
As he kicked the door to lob the grenade inside, the hidden terrorist shot him from a close range. Undeterred by his grievous injuries and refusing evacuation, the officer kept firing at the terrorist killing him. His gallant action saved the lives of his comrades and set the stage for elimination of remaining terrorists.
Captain Pawan Kumar displayed unparalleled courage and indomitable spirit in four consecutive operations and made supreme sacrifice for the nation.
