Here’s Why General Dalbir Suhag Wears The Strap Below His Lower Lip

1
General Dalbir Suhag Hat

The Gorkha soldiers are very agile, fast and strong. The latest army chief is also from Gorkha rifles of the Army. Have you ever wondered why he and other soldiers of his regiment wear the strap below his lower lip and not below his chin? Read on to know…

There are many explanations to this, one being their short heights. As Gorkhas hail from mountainous terrains and due to their genetics, they are short as compared to soldiers that hail from other parts of India. This explains the short strap so as to make them seem equal as the cap for shorter soldiers do not fit to taller ones. The size of the Cap and strap is not altered for any soldier and is kept same as a Gorkha tradition. Hence, the strap below the lower lip.

Another theory explains the reason that Gorkhas were very talkative. So, this strap makes it -difficult to talk since it is right under the lips which continuously pull it up. The strap on the lips doesn’t let you talk or eat much. Even during war, the Gurkha men screamed and charged into battle and this alerted the enemies. The Gurkha regiment couldn’t launch surprise attacks due to this character. Despite lot of training, some Gurkha soldiers found it difficult to inhibit this nature. So the commander of a Gurkha regiment instructed soldiers to wear the straps under their chin so they would be reminded not to scream when they get into attack mode. This is continued even now by the 5th Gurkha Rifles. It reminds them to “speak with your actions.” And later this hat became the identity of the Gorkhas.

Also, another theory takes into consideration some advantages of wearing the strap under the lower lip –

If the strap is worn under the chin, during a combat, it could easily be knocked back and choke the soldier, whereas this is less of an issue if it’s around their chin. You can’t strangle them to death if the strap isn’t buckled under their chin. Also if someone tries to pull the hat from behind, the Gorkha may fall backwards along with the hat, but if its strap is on the Gorkha’s chin, the hat would easily come off without damage to the soldier.General Dalbir Suhag Hat

Some even claim to be an inherited British tradition – It is the way the Gurkha regiments wear the helmet dating back to you way the original British army wore the helmets – for which the Gurkha battalions were raised.

It is also believed to be a vestigial tradition which lost value over time, just like the buttons of a blazer, which has lost its functional significance over time and remained in ceremonial fashion.whatmakesgurkhamenthemostfierceintheworld2_1429877580

Whatever the reason be, the Gorkha soldiers of Indian Army are the best in mountain warfare and other. They have proved themselves in all the wars fought by the Indian Army against Pakistan and China and also in the first and second world wars when Indian Gorkha soldiers fought for allied forces. Hitler was so impressed by Gorkhas that he said: “Give me the Gorkha battalion and I will conquer the world”.

Greetings everyone. My name is MARY GHARU and I am an Advocate by profession and my passion my first love and priority in life has always been very clear – to have my own olive green uniform . I am a twice recommended candidate and I am writing this article to share my experience of SSB and more importantly to answer the Biggest question that actually takes on everyone …” SHOULD YOU TAKE COACHING BEFORE GOING FOR SSB “? Well, I am may be not a perfect person to answer the question , because each and everyone of us is a different person and have different strong and weak attributes of our personality , but all I can do is share my experience with you all and will leave the rest to your reasoning and I hope you find a satisfying answer to your doubt.

I am a law graduate and an Ex- NCC Cadet. I went for my SSB twice and was lucky both times but there is a world of difference in the final outcome of both my attempts. My first attempt was for NCC special entry (women) that was in June 2015. Guided by my Commanding Officer Ncc and my 2 friends Kunal Shukla ; who has also been a recommended candidate from Allahabad earlier and Nitish Dogra who is an official at Oriental Bank, Allahabad, I kept on doing my preparation. Biggest thing that they told me to do was to retain my originality come what may analyze and work upon my strong points. Well we have a saying in hindi “ Guru bina gyan nahi” ; it was my case . No doubt about that it was completely their guidance and my zeal & love for uniform that I made it through my first attempt, BUT I faced many hardships ; an injured foot which was later after 3 days was found actually to be fractured , being one of them. Injury occurred on the first day of GTO tasks and next day without caring of the consequences I took a high dose of painkillers and performed . I was lucky enough to sail through and was recommended but declared unfit in medicals and even more worse n heartbreaking was standing 17th in final merit list. I was not satisfie because I knew I could do a lot better that what I did. Test was not difficult but I lacked those fine little polishing that actually makes a difference.

However my wonderful family supported me and encouraged me to not to lose hope and try again with much better preparation. This time I was having a repeater tag. I was honestly worried because of it but never let that show and rather took it to be positive and felt like more matured and confident just coz I knew what I will be facing . Because I had a multiple fractures on my foot occurred during the last SSB attempt , my father was very worried this time so wanted me to be more physically fit so he was in- charge of my physical workout and my mother made a very organized time-table chalked out for me . My siblings were my constant supporting pillars. It was not only me but my family as well who doesn’t want t leave any stone unturned this time . They wanted to make sure that I meritoriously clear this attempt . It was their idea to get an expert polishing , experienced guidance and fine tune my performance so they asked me to look for some good reliable and performing institute. However, initially I was not in support of it ( just because of what generally people say that make you like puppets and robots who just don’t use their own brain and then you lose your original responses and reaction to stimulus and so become a coached candidate there , which is not at all suggested) ; but now ; of what changes and improvement I felt after mentoring , I am so glad that i did listen to them, and this great institute happened to me.Recommended For Indian Army AIR-2

OLIVE GREENS INSTITUTE has the track record of most successful candidates; most number of recommendations since its inception. It was in that initial conversation of 20-25 minutes (when I went to check out the institution) which were an eye-opener for me. The words that were used to describe my

personality and my previous performance were hard hitting, but then I thought that I actually needed someone so honest like this for my betterment . To actually show my clear picture and actual standing. OLIVE GREENS is not an ordinary just another SSB coaching institution. It is an institution with difference which not only coach you guide you or train you for turning your dreams into a reality. But it mentors your whole personality as an officer and guide you with their years of experience as Ex-GTO’S ,Ex- Psychologist and Ex-Interviewing officers , as to how to project yourself honestly and smartly and also how to deliver to the expectations of your SSB assessors.

At olive greens you are not bookish taught on how things should be done , rather you are made to do them and then you are corrected and that’s how you learn things and never forget them. The techniques used by all the mentors at OG beautify your personality. By and by with you learn how to make those 15 OLQ’s shine in your personality and your conduct. These techniques are no rocket science but they are pure experience that speaks volume. It speaks about their dedication at OG and passion to mentor the worthy for the biggest responsibility. Those two weeks leaves a remarkable impression on your mind and personality and leaves you motivated to perform and deliver. You can see the difference in you once your mentoring weekends. Each and every student is personally guided provided you also put you 200 ‘/, during those days. The more you sweat in training the less you bleed in battle.

The way the GTO, Group planning exercise, psychology and everything else is done is, the technique is just unbeatable . You get to experience the SSB feel even before your actual SSB. Series of OIR test , psychology test, GTO,GPE,PIQ techniques classes, General Awareness sessions, mock interview etc keeps you on your toes and thus this hush-hush helps you and keeps your senses active. Anything to everything you need to know about SSB is made clear to you by the experienced & extremely co- operative mentors & staff of OG. SWOT analysis & SMART action plan is an added advantage where you get to analyze and work upon yourself. I am happy that OG happened to me and with all these expert mentoring and guidance has helped me to stay focused and sail through my 2nd SSB held in Bhopal from 29th June – 4th July , with flying colours.

So finally ,the merit is out and im ranked 2nd in merit out of the total 4 vacancies and my happiness knows no limits. Now to answer the big question of coaching or no coaching before SSB ???. I would answer this relating to my experience. No matter how brilliant you may be , you may or may not be “a SSB material” . so definitely you do need some polishing to horn your set of skills and experienced guidance to sail through and in my opinion who is better than the staff of OG who themselves have been assessors as various SSB centers. At OG your personality will not be over-shadowed and thus there is no chance that you lose your originality and your natural responses to any given stimulus; rather the years of experience of all the mentors will put you to test and help you to bring out your best and you come out shining as gold.

Once an Ogian , always an Ogian. Proud Ogian ,

MARY GHARU, Recommended from Bhopal, JAG entry, 2nd in merit , joining the training at OTA ,Chennai in October 2016.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE ASPIRANTS ………

Meet Lt Col Pillay, Who Nearly Died Saving The Life Of A Young Girl

0
Lt Col Pillay

In the Northeast, soldiers of the Army have often been accused of indiscriminately attacking innocent people in the battle against militancy. But there are clear exceptions. An Indian Army officer who nearly died saving the life of a young girl in a Manipur village, returned to her village for a reunion.

The lady was eagerly waiting to receive the officer who had saved her life 16 years ago. NDTV followed the journey of the officer travelling to the village where he says he was reborn.

On January 25, 1994, Captain DPK Pillay was on out a patrol. That night when he reached Lpabram, four militants were waiting for him. A fierce gunbattle followed, in which one militant died and Pillay was grievously injured.

But a wounded Pillay saw a young girl also injured in the crossfire. When the helicopter arrived to evacuate him, he insisted that the girl be saved first and as a dying wish he convinced his men and his officers not to launch any attack on the village sheltering the militants. Neither did he allow any action against the two cadres apprehended in action.

Best AFCAT Book –> Let’s Crack AFCAT

Pillay recovered and recently established contact with Lpabram and journeyed back to the village. The reunion was touching. The mother of the girl cried inconsolably after meeting the officer who had saved her daughter and grandson’s life almost sacrificing his own.

“It’s something anyone would do I think. She did not know why she was shot, I knew what I was doing there, they knew what they were fighting for. So we owed it to her. It’s amazing coming back here,” said Lt Col DPK Pillay.

Village Chairman Mr Atanbo remembers every moment of that night. “Mr Pillay forgave us. Without him, we couldn’t have survived.”Lt Col Pillay

The girl, Maseliu, who was caught in the crossfire, is now a mother; Dingamang, the six-year-old nephew of Maseliu, was also injured in that gunfight. “I am happy and sad at the same time.”

But Pillay wasn’t prepared for another encounter – to come face to face with the man who had shot him.

“I just can’t believe it! I came to see to see the village, I didn’t know I’d meet him,” Pillay said.

The Army officer hugged a former militant .They both came close to killing each other 16 years ago in the same attack.

Pillay’s colleague, Col Chonker, who commands a battalion near the same village, says this story is like a soldier’s dream “It’s a dream of every soldier to be known as a saviour rather than a killer.”

It’s rare for a soldier to return to a village 16 years after he led an attack against militants and almost died in that attack. It is even more rare for a village to invite a soldier who had saved the life of a girl as well the village, particularly in a state fighting intensely against the armed forces act.

Recommended From 1 AFSB Dehradun In The 1st Attempt (AFCAT Entry)

1
Recommended From 1 AFSB Dehradun

Warm Greetings friends! I am writing this article with a hope that it might help someone. I’ll consider it worthwhile even if one person effectively benefits from it. I would like to begin with a quote by Henry Ford. “If you think you can or you think you cannot, either way you’re right”. All that matters is how you see yourself. Faith in your abilities goes a long way.

Being an alumnus of Air Force Bal Bharati School, New Delhi, I have always aspired the coveted uniform. I have always aspired the honour, charisma and discipline it commands. After two failed attempts for the NDA written exam, I decided to study Economics at Delhi University. During the course of my graduation, I was always focussed to crack both AFCAT and CDSE.

I gave AFCAT (1) 2016 and CDS(1) 2016 held on 21st February and 14th February respectively. Having cleared both the written exams, my eyes were set on clearing the SSB.

Now, I would like to share my 6 Day Experience at 1 Air Force Selection Board, Dehradun.

I left home with great deal of expectations from my own self. As soon as I boarded the train I started Reading “Turning Points” by APJ Abdul Kalam. It was a 6-hour journey from Delhi to Dehradun.  After an hour of reading, a fellow candidate also boarded the train at the next station and he was seated beside me. As soon as we realised that we’re going to the same place, we instantly became friends and the entire journey was passed while we discussed about various things ranging from must-read books, AFCAT written test trends and to the myths behind the SSB testing procedure. Before even reaching the Selection Board, I had made a good friend.

I stayed at my Uncle’s Place as I had reached Dehradun a day before the Date of Reporting which was 25th of July.

Day 1 (25th July 2016)

Screening Test

I reported at the concerned place and found a good number of young candidates in formals with a military haircut. One glance and a person could know that those young lads were going for SSB. After observing a huge number of candidates who appeared focussed to crack the SSB, my mind became anxious for a second. But then, I realised that getting recommended depends upon one’s performance and not on the number of candidates. With that in mind, I embraced the opportunity of meeting new people and learning new things from the whole process.

At the reporting point I made some new friends, some were repeaters and the rest were freshers. They hailed from different states ranging from Himachal Pradesh to Telangana.

Our luggage was loaded in a Military Truck and 4 buses came there to accommodate nearly 160 candidates. After a small briefing, the candidates were told to sit inside the buses. It was a 15 min journey from Dehradun Railway station to AFSB, Clement Town.

I started to have Goosebumps as soon as we entered the AFSB. First thing that I noticed was a grounded Ajeet fighter jet at the display. The board is beautifully made as it has profuse greenery, well-structured blocks, especially the candidate’s mess. Also, there were various facilities of sports such as Volleyball, Table tennis, Badminton, Snooker, Chess etc. Not to forget, there is an army of monkeys that is forever in the pursuit of snatching eatables and fighting one another on the roof-sheds and trees.

As soon as we reached, there was a detailed briefing followed by allotment of the chest numbers. I was allotted chest number 13 and soon enough there were around 160 chest numbers in the assembly area.

The screening process began and all the candidates were asked to be seated in an auditorium.

After filling some forms, the first step of screening started with OIR (Officers’ Intelligence Rating) test which is basically an IQ test. It had a blend of both easy and difficult questions and we were supposed to do two sets of papers. There were a total of 80 questions, divided into 40 questions each in the two papers.

Immediately after the OIR Test we were asked to assemble in another room which had a projector and a big screen for Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PP&DT). A hazy picture was shown for 30 seconds and we had to write a story on it in the next 4 minutes. For the first 15 seconds I was completely blank as I was not able to understand the picture. Even then I didn’t let my focus get weakened by this initial setback and kept my eyes focussed on the picture. Soon, I was able to decipher the picture and planned a structured story and expressed my thoughts on the paper. I was not able to conclude the story due to shortage of time but I was able to express the theme and ideas behind it. As I looked around, I could see both confident and nervous faces. I am not sure whether I belonged to either of the categories.  There was no time to read the story and the candidates were asked to move to different rooms according to their groups. The papers containing stories were remained to be folded and submitted at the end of the narration and discussion process.

Soon, we were divided into the groups of 12-15 and sent to different rooms for the Narration and Discussion Test. Three assessors were present in the room and the candidates were sitting in a Semi-circular pattern. After a small briefing and introduction, the Individual Narration started with me as I was sitting at the extreme end. I narrated my story in about 45 seconds sticking to the theme of my story. My narration was short, to the point and even had a conclusion which I was not able to write on the paper during the Picture Perception Test. One after another every candidate in the group narrated their individual stories.

After the narration, Assessors asked the group to start a discussion and reach towards a common story. I was looking towards the assessors while they were telling us to begin the discussion. Even before I could turn my head towards the group, most of the candidates began to speak at the top of their voice. The discussion was a complete chaos. I didn’t speak anything for a while waiting for the “right time”, but it seemed like none of the group members would ever stop speaking for a second. Even I joined the massacre and tried to be a significant part of the discussion. At last, I found the “right time” and put forward my thoughts in an effective manner. Post that, the discussion continued and the assessor had to stop the discussion so that we could reach a conclusion. A fellow candidate concluded the discussion and we were lauded by the assessors before being asked to disperse.

With this our screening process was complete and candidates were free to have lunch. All of us were hoping for the best.  The result was out after 2 hours. 66 out of 160 candidates were screened in. Screened in candidates were allotted new chest numbers and my new chest number was 8.

After the dispersal of screened out candidates, we were allotted rooms according to our groups.

My group had 8 candidates and we were allotted the room named ‘Vajra’.  Apart from my own group I ventured around in other rooms and made friends from other groups as well. We played Volleyball for a very long period until it was dark. Dinner was good and the mess staff was very polite. So the first day ended on a positive note.

Day-2

Psychological Tests

There are 4 Tests namely, Thematic Apperception Test(TAT), Word Association Test(WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT) and Self-Description Test (SD).  These tests help the psychologists to determine the personality traits of the candidates.

TAT: I was able to write stories on all the 11 pictures and a blank slide in the given time.

WAT: was able to form sentences on all the 60 words in the given time.

SRT: was able to act on all the 60 Situations in the given time.

SD: Since I had introspected well, I was able to write about myself in various perspectives required by the psychologist.

Post the psych test, my right index finger remained crushed for the next 30 mins. It was a very mentally exhausting test. Nevertheless, It went as good as I had visualised in my mind.

Suggestions:

  1. Practice is the master key to attempt all of it in the given time. Save PPTs in the computer and practice the tests at home with a timer. This is the only way to effectively utilise time at the real test.
  2. Introspect as much as you can for the Self Description Test. Take the opinion of your friends, parents and teachers. Write your own views about yourself. Cover all the aspects in a way that you’re able to finish your SD in 15 mins. Find out your Strengths and Weaknesses for a better insight.
  3. Don’t attempt psychological tests with a preconceived notion. I saw many candidates trying to memorise stories and sentences from sample books. This is a very foolish thing to do as the psychologist gets to know whether your idea is natural or copied from a book. You might write a few good stories; a few good sentences and a few good situation reactions by copy pasting the ideas from sample books, but the remaining stories, sentences and situation reactions will be your natural responses different from those of sample books. This will create an inconsistency and the Psychologist will able to determine your case.
  4. Write your natural responses to succeed. Read more books, articles, magazines to enrich your thoughts. Practice all the tests by using a timer to increase your speed.Recommended From 1 AFSB Dehradun

Day-3

Group Tasks and Interview

I was amongst those few candidates who had their interviews just after the GTO tasks.

GTO tasks were to be held from 7:30 am to 11:30am. My interview time was 12 pm. I was mentally prepared to give my interview in the GTO attire.

Anyway, Group tasks started at 7.30am and we were asked to be seated in a room. After waiting for around 30 minutes, Two Assessors entered the room and briefed us about the first task and its rules.

Group Discussions

The first task was two-round Group Discussion. In the first round we were asked to choose either “India-Pakistan Relations” or “Climate Change- Challenges and Way Forward” as a topic of discussion. We decided to discuss on Climate change as it was a broader topic, which significantly affects the whole world. Brief chaotic moments occurred during the Discussion but it was relatively more peaceful and disciplined than the PPDT Discussion. The group was able discuss for good 20 mins. After we were finished discussing the first topic, GTO sir gave us another topic namely “Healthcare in India- Challenges and Solutions”. A healthy discussion was continued for another 15-20 mins.

I was able to initiate one of the two topics and gave many ideas during the discussions. Also, I took the initiative to align the group with the point of discussion whenever they went into a chaotic mode. Nevertheless, it was a healthy GD and way better than what I had experienced in the PP&DT (Screening).

Suggestions:

  1. Be confident and speak quality over quantity. Speaking less but speaking quality stuff is always better than speaking irrelevant things continuously.
  2. Give chance to others and don’t over-dominate the discussion. Being Considerate to others’ views is one of the highest qualities of a good human. Difference of Opinions amongst members is bound to happen. Respect that and be reasonable with your ideas and the ideas of others.
  3. Speak as much as you can as long as you can contribute to the discussion in a healthy manner.

Group Planning exercise

In the same room, we were asked to relax for a couple of minutes post the Group discussion. After another small briefing about the GPE, GTO sir explained us the whole model and we were asked to write our individual solutions on the paper. I could identify 4 problems and began to solve it on the paper. As soon as I solved the second problem, the bell rang and GTO sir asked us to drop the pens.

I was appalled as half of my Planning on the paper was left incomplete. I gathered my courage for the GPE Discussion as I had a chance to compensate through it. The GPE Discussion began and everyone gave various ideas to solve the problems. The discussion went on for the next 20 mins. GTO sir asked us to conclude the planning. I nominated a Group member whose most of the ideas were common to the group. Everyone else agreed upon that. He concluded the planning and we were finally done with the GPE.

Suggestions:

  1. One has to be an effective team player during the discussions
  2. If you’re nominated to conclude the discussion then it is good. But if you’re not, then it doesn’t mean that you won’t be recommended. It is about how effectively you help the team to devise a plan.
  3. Contribute with your suggestions, ideas and value additions to someone else’s ideas.

Respect others views and be a good listener as well as a good speaker.

Progressive Group task

There were total of 4 obstacles to be completed in a given time and we were able to do only 3 of them. I couldn’t grab a resource at the start line and remained as a normal team player at the first obstacle. As soon as we crossed the first obstacle, I got the chance to handle the resources and started delivering my ideas and techniques. Everyone contributed somewhat equally and we gradually crossed the third obstacle with great difficulty. There was a verbal tussle between two of my group members over the difference of ideas. GTO sir noticed that and finally asked us to cease our efforts to cross the 4th obstacle.

It was not pleasant for us. As a group, we had failed to complete all the obstacles. I still had hope to perform in the next task which was a Half Group Task.

Half Group Task

My group had 8 members and it was divided into two groups of 4 members each. This task had 2 obstacles for each group. Each group had to perform turn wise.  Our turn came and we had no other option but to perform successfully.

The task began and I contributed more than PGT this time, gave good ideas and led the group through the first obstacle. In the Second obstacle, one of the group members came with a bright idea and along with others, I helped him to implement it. We were able to succeed as a group within 10 minutes. It was an amazing feeling.

With this our Group Tasks for the day ended.

Interview

It was 11:45 am and I had 15 minutes to change my attire for the interview. I rushed like a cheetah, washed my face and changed within 15 minutes. I reached the waiting room at 12:10pm. I was asked to wait and the interviewer asked for my documents and certificates at 12:40pm. After 20 minutes of scrutiny he called me in at 1:00pm. I asked for the permission to come in and marched into the room confidently. After an exchange of greetings, he asked me to take the seat. The interview went for more than an hour. Maybe 70 minutes. The Interviewer began with rapport building and asked the meaning of my name and where do I hail from.

After answering these questions, I was asked to answer a series of questions, which are also known as rapid fire questions, where the interviewer asks some 5-8 questions rapidly and one has to answer all of them in a right sequence. Round one was focussed upon me only.

The questions were about my Educational background, my reason behind the intent of joining defence forces, reason behind switching the subjects from Science in 12th standard to Economics in the graduation, reason behind failing  the NDA written exam etc. I answered a few questions and asked him to repeat the questions that I had missed. After he had repeated, I answered the ones I had missed out. Round one was good.

In the round 2 he asked numerous questions about my family and friends. My Relationship with them, what qualities I would like to acquire from them, what do they think about me, What are my strengths and weaknesses according to them,  what have I done to improve my weaknesses, What are my strong and weak points according to my own self, etc. There were many other questions but I’m just writing whatever I could remember.

In the round 3 he asked about my hobbies, Sports and Extra Curricular Activities.

After three rapid fire rounds, the Interviewer started a General knowledge round and it lasted for 15mins. I was asked about burning International and National Issues. We had a good discussion over the South China Sea Issue and the Syrian Crisis. Apart from that general one word questions were also asked regarding the Indian defence forces. GK round was okayish as I was able to answer barely 60% of the questions. With this, My interview was over. I smiled and the Interviewer extended his hand for a handshake. I had a firm handshake with him and marched out of the room with a brimming smile.

I was hungry and ran towards the mess to have lunch.

After the interviews, we were officially taken to IMA, Dehra Dun for a short trip. As soon as I saw Chetwode building, I felt an Adrenalin rush in my body. We were lucky to roam inside the IMA and witness young cadets jogging or cycling there covered with sweat and camouflage. We went to the Memorial, Vikram Batra Mess and Kheterpal Auditorium.  Such a beautiful place it is.

It is known that even birds fly over the IMA in an attention position. We came back to the AFSB soon and that marked the end of the 3rd day.

Suggestions for Interview:

  1. Smile as much as you can. A smile straight from your heart is the most powerful way to put a positive impression.
  2. Introspect about yourself. Find out your strengths and weaknesses and the ways to improve your weaknesses.
  3. Talk to your Family members and friends; take everyone’s opinion about you.
  4. Understand the depth of your relationship with parents, siblings and friends.
  5. Be brutally honest to the Interviewer as he is trained to find out lies and bluff.
  6. Accepting your mistake in the past is better than giving excuses to the interviewer.
  7. Don’t criticise anyone.
  8. If you don’t know the answer to a GK question, bluntly tell him that you don’t know. If you want to guess then take the Interviewer’s permission before guessing.Recommended SSB For Air Force

Day -4

GTO (Remaining Tasks)

Lecturette:

It was both dreadful and a funny experience. As it was a very green area full of trees and insects, I was bothered by a honey bee since the beginning of Lecturette. My chest number was 8. As soon as chest number 7 stood up to pick up the card containing topics, some insect flew inside my T-shirt. I tried to remain calm but it started to bite me. My focus got shifted towards getting rid of the insect. The GTO observed that I was fidgeting. Due to my diverted focus, I didn’t hear the bell and kept sitting for around 30-40 seconds after the bell had rung. I realised that and immediately picked up the card while chest number 7 had been speaking already for a minute by then.

That was a blunder and I could do nothing to correct that. I mustered all the confidence and courage I could and chose the topic “Globalisation VS Nationalisation”, which was the most complex of all the 4 topics in my card. I chose it because I could connect and think about the concepts behind it. However, I Spoke confidently for 3 mins and gave a nice conclusion. I believe that my well-structured delivery coupled with facts and knowledge, compensated the earlier blunder.

Suggestions:

  1. Choose a topic on which you’ll be able to speak fluently. It is not about the level of the topic but about the delivery of the topic. So, choose wisely.
  2. Be confident while speaking and avoid involuntary movement of hands and legs.
  3. Speak until your last bell. Take your full time to put forward your thoughts. This will indicate your mental stamina.
  4. Apply odomos if you want to prevent insects and bees from bothering you during the critical moments. 😛

Individual Obstacles:

This was very easy. I did 9 obstacles out of 10 in the given time.

Suggestions:

  1. Tiger Leap and rope climbing should be done with utmost care. Avoid sliding down with speed as it rubs and injures one’s fingers and forearms.

Command Task:

My command task went really well. I was called by 5 out of 7 group members as their team mate. I had already helped 4 members with their command task when my turn came. I was battle hardened by it and completed my command task by giving 2 different ideas. Immediately after my task, I was called as a team member by another group member. It was tiring but a worthwhile experience.

Suggestions:

  1. Utilise all the resources and never let your team mates stand idle.
  2. If a Commander is the brain, team mates are the body. Tell your team what to do and how to do. Once they grasp the command, let them do the physical work. If they don’t understand it, then show them how it is done.
  3. A commander gives the idea and the team members implement it.
  4. Never lose your calm.

Final group task:

This was quite easy in comparison to the PGT. In this task, everyone cooperated and we were able to successfully complete it within the given time.

5th day

Most of the repeaters had their final GTO tasks on this day. Interviews were still going on. I was totally free by now.

We had the permission to go out of the AFSB premises and return by 7:00 pm. Along with my group I went to the Mind Rolling Monastery located in clement town. It is beautifully made with lush greenery all over the place. One can meditate peacefully there. After that we went out to eat something. We came back well within time and proceeded to play whatever we could. Be it volleyball or Table tennis.

The day went great. It was very light and my group was already free by now.

6th Day (Conference Day)

It was a big day for every candidate. My turn came and I waited for around 15 mins outside the conference room. It was way more than the average waiting time of 1 min for all the candidates who went before me. I marched in and greeted them. There were around 20 officers sitting in that room. I had to be calm, no matter what. They launched the questions ranging from my personal to academic life. Almost all the questions were complex. Somehow, I was able to answer them confidently. It went for around 10 minutes and then they asked for suggestions. I gave none and smiled at them. With this my conference ended.

All the 66 candidates were asked to wait in the auditorium. Results were announced. As soon as DSO sir announced my chest number, my mind stopped working for a second. My heart skipped a beat. Finally, my visualisations were turned into reality that day.  There were 2 more candidates who were recommended. Out of 160, only 3 were recommended and I was one of them. We were immediately taken to a different room and we could not even meet our group members. We filled up numerous forms and the whole process took 3 hours. After completing the formalities we were free to leave.

Walking out of the Air Force Selection Board as a recommended candidate was the biggest achievement of my life.

I would like to conclude my experience with a quote by a wise man.  “Man becomes what he thinks about”.

Your thoughts, beliefs and actions should be aligned with your goals.  Whatever the mind can conceive, it can achieve. You just have to be disciplined and persistent in your actions. If you can do this, then nothing can stop your dreams from manifesting itself into reality.

My dear friends, I wish you all the good that prevails in this universe. May you march towards your goal with glory. Become the Woman/Man you were meant to be.

Godspeed.

Regards,

Bhavani Singh

SSB Recommended For Indian Army NCC Special Entry

0
SSB Recommended For Indian Army

I got recommended for the mighty Indian ARMY through NCC special entry 40th course and i thought i will share my experience with you all so that you might get benefited from it. It was my 3rd attempt and i was overconfident in both my last attempts and use to care about people way too much. For ex: i use to think what people will say about me when i speak. So during my 3rd attempt , i focussed on myself rather than on others. I prepared hard for GK, psych and others but this time i was prepared and not overconfident. So these two factors helped me a lot during my stay at the centre.

SSB at Bangalore: Around 130 reported at SSB centre of 24 SSB board and 5-10 were not allowed to attend because of document problems. I was given chest no 91.After verification the next day i had screening test.

1st day (23rd  July , 2016):   After breakfast intelligence tests started which was very simple. OIR consists of very simple questions and no preparation is required for that.

PPDT: A picture was shown in which there was a boat in a river with the boatman and 2 other persons formally dressed. I made the story as Ram was fond of photography and he goes to riverside with his uncle takes photograph with boatman’s help and wrote an article on it which was selected for The Hindu newspaper. After sometime discussion started, everyone started shouting and GTO warned us once. Again we started the discussion and this time i opened up and took control of group and again it was fish market. So, i told everyone guys please cooperate we need to come to a common group story and then we discussed well gave a common group story. Just because of cooperation 9 of us were screened in only from my group. After results 22 of us were screened in. We completed documentation and the day was over. Made new friends . 17 were form Karnataka , 4 from kerala and i was the only one from Uttar Pradesh. I was given chest no 12.

Imp. Point: Narration plays a major role so please don’t screw it up, narrate well and regarding discussion discuss don’t fight, cooperate well and try to reach a consensus.

2nd day(24th July): PSYCHOLOGY TESTS

TAT:  You know the drill, 11+1 pictures and stories based on that. For blank slide i wrote the story which i have already prepared for it.

WAT: 60 words shown and the words were very  familiar as i have practised WAT before from SSBCRACK app which you can download from playstore, so i wrote 57 out of 60.

SRT: 60 SRTS out of which i could do only 42. The one thing about SRT is quality matters not quantity so read carefully and then react to the situation.

SD:  I had my self description prepared in advance so i completed every section without wasting time.

Imp. Point: Don’t write stories in TAT with preconceived ideas and don’t try to fit any story which you have prepared and prepare blank story in advance so that you don’t loose your time because after writing 11 stories your mind will shutdown. Give original response. WAT requires practise as you will run out of time in SSB if you don’t practise it well and SRTS don’t run for maximum numbers do the best you can, give your natural response. Prepare self description well in advance. After psychological tests, i  went out with friends , saw the city and  came back.

3rd day (24th July): GTO DAY 1

Group discussion: We were given 2 topics: (1) Role of NCC in society and (2): Sports development.

We discussed and came to a consensus that we will discuss on sports development. Discussion went on for around 20 minutes and then GTO gave us 2nd topic Road safety and awareness. While discussing give everyone a chance to speak and cooperate among the group. You are appearing for SSB so consider yourself as an officer and either lead the team or support the team. Just don’t interrupt others for the sake of speaking, it will only lend you in trouble.

Group planning exercise: GTO briefed us about the situation and problems in the plan and then asked us to write solution for it individually and then took our notepads and told us to discuss. We discussed and then i presented the final group plan. Before giving group plan i asked my group members whether they have a doubt, they said no. But when GTO asked the same then they raised their hands and gave suggestions. When group plan has been given you are not supposed to raise hands for suggestions. Even if you have any problem with the final plan give your views before the final plan and not after the plan has been given.

Progressive group task: Everyone started in a hurry started fighting for helping materials, by that time i figured out how to cross the obstacle. Others got helping materials and i was empty handed but i had the ideas so i turned the table on them and gave the ideas and made them follow my words and took my team to the others side of obstacle. The point here is don’t fight for materials instead find out ideas to cross the obstacle and complete the task. Helping materials are of no use until you don’t know how to use them.

Group obstacle race: After briefing we were shown the obstacles and then we were told to choose a slogan . I came out with the slogan VANDE MATARAM and everyone agreed. I  was at front and helped tall guy of my group to climb the wall and then i climbed up and pulled everyone meanwhile only  i was shouting the slogan as my mates were exhausted. A moment came where 1 one of my mate was left behind and others started running ahead and leaving him behind. I stopped others helped my leftout mate to join the group and then we completed the task together. We got plenty of penalties for touching red mark on obstacles. Whatever may be the situation don’t leave any of your mates behind even if you loose doesn’t matter finish the obstacle together and keep shouting the slogan as loud as possible.

Half group task: Out of 7 members we were divided in 2 groups. 1st group of 4 members and 2nd group with 3 members , i was in 2nd group. My group was called for the task, GTO briefed us and gave us 15 minutes to do the task. I was the only guy who spoke and other two were silent all the time because they were clueless . GTO started talking to me, i gave 1 idea then he started asking others ideas. I along with other 2 completed the task. The tasks given are easy and  completely based on common sense. Look at the obstacles carefully , listen to the briefing very carefully and you will do it easily.

Lecturette : After the briefing 1st guy introduced himself and took 1 card and went 20ms away from the group and prepared his topic whereas others were giving their introduction. I picked a card and i got 4 topics which were:

  1. Nuclear weapons.
  2. South China dispute.
  3. Road safety.
  4. Girl in the society.

I chose the last one i.e., GIRL IN THE SOCIETY. The topic was very simple which needed no preparation. I started speaking on it started by giving examples of 1st 3 women fighter pilots and used Modi’s BETI BACHAO BETI PADHAO scheme and spoke with confidence in front of my group. I heard the 1st bell and then started winding it up and finished it as soon as i heard the 2nd bell. Don’t go for major topics until you know well about it and can speak for 3 minutes. You can speak on any topic, the main aspect is the way you speak in front of your group, content of your topic, your confidence and eye contact that’s what matters.

GTO DAY 1 WAS OVER

I WAS CALLED FOR INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW:

I was called for interview soon after the GTO tasks so i went inside in the same dirty dress. The interviewer came to door and then hand shaked with me. Interview started with rapid fire round. I started replying , he stopped me and asked me about name of two of my  friends in college i told ROCKY AND JEET and then asked me to continue with the rapid round. After 40 minutes he again asked me about the name of two college friends  , i told ROCKY AND JEET. He cross checked me like i told you above 2 or 3 times. When you go for interview , be honest with the interviewer or else he will put you in pressure and you will start giving the answer which the interviewer is looking for. He/she will cross check you many times to check your honesty so fill the PIQ form honestly and remember what you have written in the PIQ. Sometimes interviewer might ask you about your parents , your friends and your teachers thinking about you to cross check you with your SELF DESCRIPTION part which he has with him. The only way to perform well is to be honest from the starting i.e., PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS. I was satisfied with my interview as i was honest with him, after which i came to room , changed my dress and went outside with friends. When you go inside the interviewing room, stay calm and don’t panic. The interviewer wants to know you that’s all. Give answers to his questions honestly and you will go through it. For performing well in the interview, note questions from books, apps etc , write their answers and sit in front of a mirror ask those questions to yourself and then reply. This will help you to control your facial expressions along with better fluency.

4th day (25th july) : GTO DAY 2

Individual obstacles: GTO 2 started and 1st task was individual obstacle task and i was very excited about it. As it rained that day we were advised to do carefully as the obstacles were slippery. I started my task from commando walk and made a route which helped me to cover all the obstacles. I fell down from tarzan swing as the ropes were wet and again i did it the next time. I could do only 10 as the obstacles and planks were wet. The obstacles are very simple anybody who plays outdoor games can easily do it and there is no practice required for this task.

Command task: GTO started calling each candidate one by one. Out of 7 members , 5 members of my group called me during their turn. My turn came , GTO started asking about myself and then asked me to call two members and then briefed me about the obstacle and told me to start. I gave instructions to my subordinates about the task and asked them not to speak until i asked them to do so. I started the task, gave 1 idea, GTO asked me how would you cross this if you don’t have rope, i answered and showed him how to do it. Within no time i completed my task and was asked to leave. It shows your influence within the group when most of the group members are asking your help during their tasks. After getting screened in , i got to know every candidate who was screened in and i became friendly with them. This is what helped me in the GTO tasks specially THE COMMAND TASK where i was called 5 times. Socialising with others help you in many tasks so be prepared to get mingled with your fellow mates. I have seen guys reading their books during their stay in SSB whole time, which doesn’t help you because you came for SSB so you should prepare before reaching the SSB centre and not after reaching the centre. A little revision is good , but too much of it will put pressure on you. So stay calm, enjoy with friends and behave normally as you behave outside the SSB centre and this will help you to show your original self.

Final group task: This was the final task. We were given very less time to cross the obstacle once the GTO briefed us and then i saw my members going for helping materials, i again took the opportunity and briefed my team to cross the obstacle. But , then one member of my group gave 1 perfect idea to cross over and everyone started fighting to cross the obstacle the way they want. I pacified everyone explained the importance of time and made them cross the obstacle through the shortest way shown by my group member. We reached the 2nd obstacle, i gave the idea to cross over to the 3rd obstacle and final idea was given by chest no 11 to complete the task. 3 obstacles, 3 ideas and the task was completed within the given time. Listen carefully to the briefing and find out ideas to do the task and don’t fight for helping materials as i told you before.

Imp. Point: GTO tasks are about cooperation within the group. If you want to show individually show it in individual obstacles, lecturrette, command tasks and rest other tasks are to be done with the cooperation of the group. Whenever group discussion reaches a tensed point, pacify others and let others also speak. Don’t try to dominate others in GD, GPE, GOR, etc. Cooperate well , gain support and show that either you are a team player or a leader.

5th day-D-DAY(26th july)

CONFERENCE:

I woke up at 5.30 am took bath , had breakfast and was waiting for conference with others at the waiting point i.e., T-POINT , this is what we call the waiting point as in Bangalore. Conference started, i was called in and my conference was hardly 15 seconds. I went inside wished them, my interviewer asked about my stay and any suggestions i said no, then he asked me to leave that’s it. I was shocked my conference was only for 10-15 seconds whereas for others it was atleast 50 seconds – 1 minute. Anyway conference was over , we were asked to sit in a room for results. Psychologist came and motivated us to come again for the SSB for those who didn’t make it this time. He started announcing results, he called chest no.11 my buddy and then he called chest no. 12….it was me , i was shocked , he called again chest no. 12, then i realised and went near him and told him my full name. That is the best feeling for any aspirant. No words can describe that feeling. When they say you have to earn it, it means you work hard for it and earn that moment because hardwork for that moment is worth it. So warriors start working hard to earn that moment, and don’t loose hope and never ever doubt yourself. The day you stop believing yourself, you shouldn’t even appear for SSB. That’s why work hard, believe yourself, have faith in GOD, definitely you will make it. I know what it feels when you prepare for SSB, there will be times when you will feel like giving up, but what you do next determines your future. Keep pushing hard no matter how much time it takes. It you who has decided to join this honoured organisation, so atleast try your level best so that you won’t regret later that you didn’t give your best. It doesn’t matter you get screened out 5 times or conference out 6 times , what matters is your belief system. As i told you earlier, the day you stop believing yourself don’t even appear for SSB because when you don’t believe yourself , then how you expect others to believe you?!!!! Its all about your personality, OLQS etc. If you want to become an officer, start behaving like an officer, its not that difficult. Consider yourself as an officer and be a responsible person, because if you behave as an officer in real life, then you don’t have to fake when you appear for SSB. First do your homework i.e., hardwork and then expect support from GOD. Don’t just keep blaming GOD and the SSB officials for not selecting you. There isn’t a pure selecting process than SSB, so first of all you got to believe that you are going through a pure process where they will test you for your quality. Your  5 days will decide the future of million people of the country. Whenever you feel depressed, talk to parents, friends because they really are angels. Lots of inspiring videos are there in YOUTUBE, SSBCRACK watch them and get a boost and then start working towards your goal. The day you get recommended you will respect yourself for your hardwork because that’s the best feeling ever. Introspection is a must, without which it’s not possible to show your real self. Start your preparation by knowing the whole SSB process and then INTROSPECTION.

Regarding GK read newspaper daily , that is more than enough. You can follow websites such as SSBCRACK, DEFENSEUPDATE.IN, DEFENSENEWS.IN, watch TV debates on issues which you find confusing. Watching TV debates will help you learn the way to speak in a group discussion along with the knowledge. I would like to thank SSBCRACK and JAYENDRA PRATAP SINGH SIR(DO FOLLOW HIS ARTICLES) for doing such a great work, without which it wouldn’t have been possible.

AFCAT 2 2016 Last Minute Tips

AFCAT 2 2016, which will be conducted on 28th August in 2 shifts (morning and evening), is being targeted by many candidates. The time is limited and the target is near. This moment is not to dust out the books and go deep in all the data. Rather, the last moment tips work here. This also needs prior preparation. But it will work if planed as per the personal caliber. To improve your performance in AFCAT 2 2016, we are here with some tips.
– Go Through The Current Affairs – The current affairs are the most crucial thing to cover at the last moment. This will escalate your marks and will also take you over the cut-off. As per the previous year pattern, last 4-5 months current affairs are averagely covered in the exam.
– Maths Formulas Should Be On Your Tips – Solving calculative and bulky problems before 10 days of the exam is not a good decision. Quickly learn all the important formulas and solve basic types of questions asked in the exam, rather than going through the diverse kind of questions that will only purify your calculative power. Maths is the most simple and scoring section of AFCAT. So make sure you get more and more marks in this section, where chances of marks deduction is very low.

indian air force training
Indian Air Force Cadets

– Readout G.K. Short Points – Don’t go deep into G.K. at last moment. This will entangle your prior knowledge and leave you confused. Go through the simple and easy point of all G.K. sections. As the exam is perfectly optional and no statement type question is there, so going deep is not required. Just commemorate precise terms, dates and related matter without going deep into the matter.
Sample Papers And Previous Year Papers For Time Management – Final step should be to solve sample papers and previous year papers to get the idea of exam and per-specify the time management for the examination. 2 hours for the exam are sufficient for covering the exam. But still, time management is required to solve it effectively. Candidates can get the previous year papers here AFCAT Solved Question Papers Download
Apart from the above tips, some other short and quick tips to enhance and increase your marks are –

  • Avoid marking questions on which you are not sure
  • Attempt the section, which you find easy in solving
  • Read thoroughly before marking
  • Stay calm in maths calculations
  • Observation matters in reasoning

Conclusion – The AFCAT examination is the open door for all AirForce aspirants. The examination is of average difficulty level and most of the candidates clear the examination easily. The exam is just few days ahead and candidates would be in a mess of grabbing more in less time. Keep every aspect clear and check your performance in smart way. Manage time judiciously and attend the exam with full confidence.
