8 Reasons Indian Companies Should Hire A Military Veteran

0
Indian Army Veterans Hire

Companies often look for workers who are dedicated, committed, trustworthy and loyal to them while hiring new employees.

Military veterans returning to civilian life are one of the most sought after work force even for some major companies today. They are from some of the most highly skilled, adaptable and resourceful individuals that a company could hire.

Here are the 8 reasons why companies in India should start hiring military veterans:

  1. Determination: Only few cultures have been engineered like the one military veteran has been a part of. They focus entirely on mission achievement, cooperation and personal development. The fact is that there is no culture in the world that shapes people in the way the military does.
  2. Commitment: Veterans are experienced at looking at the big picture and completing their assigned task. They will not even complain about working hard for long hours or missing their breaks when there is something that urgently needs to be completed. They’re adept at tackling problems and handling challenges without losing focus of their goal.
  3. Teamwork: Military veterans are familiar with working together as a team and they know its importance as it could’ve made the difference between life and death. This ability is greatly in demand with companies in any industry, which makes a veteran the perfect team member.
  4. Leadership Skills: Leadership skills of veterans are built-in them as they’ve experienced it in while going up their ranks in service. Veterans have pre-owned leadership skills. They can handle responsibilities placed on them – the more the rank, the more the responsibilities. Age or tenure is not that matters the most but rather the quality of contribution and leadership they provide.
  5. Integrity: Veterans know what it means to do “an honest day’s work.” Prospective employers can take advantage of a track record of integrity, often including security clearances. This integrity translates into qualities of sincerity and trustworthiness.
  6. Hard Working and can Handle Pressure like a Pro: Veterans understand the rigors of tight schedules and limited resources. They have developed the capacity to know how to accomplish priorities on time, in spite of a tremendous stress. They know the critical importance of staying with a task until it is done right.
  7. Responsibility: Military people are more responsible because when they were very young there were serious consequences to the decisions they made. Veterans have passed through trials that most people haven’t, ensuring that they are responsible individuals who can successfully carry out their duties.
  8. Learn New Skills Quickly: Veterans have the proven ability to learn new skills and concepts. In addition, they can enter workforce with identifiable and transferable skills, proven in real-world situations. This background can enhance organization’s productivity.

Remembering Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

0
Jallianwala Bagh

On this day 97 years ago, one of the most horrific massacres of Indians was carried out by soldiers of the British Raj led by Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer.

He opened fire on a gathering of 10,000 unarmed men, women and children at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on the day of Baisakhi. They were gathered there to protest British rule and seek freedom for India.

Jallianwala Bagh is a large open space enclosed on three sides by buildings with only one exit. Dyer positioned his men at the sole, passageway and without issuing any warning to the gathering, ordered 50 British-Indian troops to fire. The soldiers fired for 10 to 15 minutes till they ran out of ammo after firing 1,650 bullets of .303-inch.

Dyer was removed from his command by the British government after the incident and he later died in 1927 after suffering a series of strokes.

Here is what happened on that day:

There was considerable unrest in Punjab during World War I, particularly among the Sikhs due to the demolition of a boundary wall of Gurdwara Rikabganj at New Delhi, among other reasons.

Later based on the recommendations of Rowlatt committee, two bills, popularly called Rowlatt Bills, were published in the Government of India Gazette on 18 January 1919. Mahatma Gandhi decided to organize a satyagrah against the bills. One of the bills later became an Act against which Mahatma Gandhi gave call for countrywide hartal or general strike on 30 March which was later postponed to 6 April 1919.

The strike in Lahore and Amritsar concluded peacefully. After 4 days, on 10 April, the governor of the Punjab, Sir Michael Francis O’Dwyer, deported Dr Satyapal and Dr Saif ud-Din Kitchlew, two popular leaders of men from Amritsar to Dehradun leading to a general strike again in Amritsar in groups of 50,000, protesting against the deportation. The crowd, however, was stopped and fired upon near the railway foot-bridge killing at least 12 people.

While those killed were being carried back through the streets, an angry mob went on to rampage destroying government buildings and beating 5 Europeans to death. By the unexpected fury of the mob, the government called in the army the same afternoon which maintained peace in the streets of Amritsar till 11 April – the day General Reginald Dyer got transferred here. He immediately established Army rule in Amritsar banning all meetings and gatherings.

On 13 April, the day of Baisakhi, a large number of people arrived into the city from the surrounding villages after being called upon to assemble for a meeting in the Jallianwala Bagh at 4:30 in the evening by the local leaders.

General Dyer, after receiving knowledge of this call, set out for the venue of the meeting with 50 riflemen and two armoured cars with machine guns mounted on them. He arrived at about 5:15 p.m. and deployed his riflemen at the sole entrance. Without warning or ordering the crowd to disperse he asked his men to open fire. The firing continued for about 10-15 minutes.

The official figures were 379 killed and 1200 wounded.

The government of India ordered an investigation of the incident (the Hunter Commission), which in 1920 censured Dyer for his actions and ordered him to resign from the military. He went on to say that if the armoured cars could’ve got through that passage, he would have opened fire on them with the machine guns!

The Jallianwalla Bagh site in Amritsar is now a national monument. It sits much like a story in our history textbooks for us now. But, will the Indians ever forget the sacrifice of the 10,000 innocent people who were celebrating Baisakhi? Some lost their mother, some their father; some lost their sister, some their brother; while some sacrificed their own lives.

Let us spare a moment this day to remember the invaluable sacrifice of the people of Jallianwala Bagh on 13 April, 1919.

9 Reasons Being A Fighter Pilot Isn’t As Cool As You Think

0

Military pilots are highly trained to fly supersonics and heavy aircraft. These pilots are often highly sought after by civilian flight departments due to the nature and amount of flying involved in their military training and sum it up with the military skills and discipline, you get an ideal pilot for civil aviation.

As a military pilot, you get to travel a lot and gain flying hours quickly while serving their country. But everything has a downside and so does flying fighter jets, like:

  1. Getting into the Air Force is not easy let alone being a fighter pilot. The physical training and requisites, the medicals and several other attributes required make it hard for anyone to get in.IAF 2
  2. Fighter pilots need to refuel their jets every 12 hours after full tank refuelling (as in case of Su-30). The more speed you gain, the more will be fuel consumption and the more frequent you need to refuel.image (7)
  3. As cool as it might sound taking off and landing a jet, its way scarier and dangerous than that. During take-off, the jets go from 0 to anywhere in between 150-200 kmph. That’s manifold the acceleration of the fastest car in the world! The factor here again is G – you may pass out.image (2)
  4. Fighter pilots don’t get to fly very much. Pilots who flew the jet planes spent most of their time hanging around on the ground waiting for either enemy attack or a training session.image (3)
  5. Air Force has a bond that compels the pilot to be in service for a minimum period of time like 14 years in case of Short Service Commission.image (4)
  6. Being fighter pilot come with risks of casualty. The bad guys try to shoot you in a dogfight.image (1)
  7. But, dogfighting is not about chasing and killing the bad guys, it’s more about staying conscious and not passing out with multiple of Gs exerted on you. And with that, you need to take care of the enemy chase.image (5)
  8. Pilots are not as scared of enemy fire as they are scared of the plane going out of control. The controls malfunction at times forcing an ‘Emergency Landing’.image (6)
  9. Finally, ejecting. It may be the nightmare for many fighter pilots. When the pilots eject their seats due to any factor, it exerts 20 times more force on the body than they are on earth. Anything can happen in those 5 seconds – a 70 kg man will be of 1,400 kg, the pilot may be crippled, he may break his spine and in worst cases, he may die.image (8)

So, for those willing to work hard and sacrifice a little, military flying is a great option. And if becoming a fighter pilot is you goal, a military flying career will get you there pretty easily.

Are you up for it?

11 Things To Know About Red Flag Air Exercise

0
Red Flag Air Exercise

The Exercise Red Flag is a multinational air exercise, originally conceived in 1975 by USAF to provide operational exposure and mutual exchange of Op capability of friendly Air Forces. Red Flag – Alaska is a successor to the previous COPE THUNDER exercise series in the Western Pacific and Alaska.

The exercise provides an opportunity to practice and refine their skills for real combat situations to the pilots from the US, NATO and other allied forces. This includes the use of enemy hardware and live ammunition for bombing exercises within the Nellis complex.

  1. The IAF contingent along with the aircraft departed from Jamnagar on April 3 2016 for Eielson Air Force Base Alaska in USA.
  2. IAF is participating in the exercise following an invitation from the US Air Force (USAF). The exercise is scheduled to commence from April 28 to May 13.
  3. The exercise will see participation of 12 IAF aircraft including the Russian origin Su30 MKI, deep penetration Jaguars, two C17 transport planes and two mid-air refuellers IL 78.
  4. Before reaching Alaska, the IAF aircraft will travel through Bahrain, Egypt, France, Portugal and Canada.
  5. It will also see over 150 IAF personnel in action, who will undergo some training before being sent to Alaska. According to an estimate, it will cost India over 100 crore rupees.
  6. The contingent is led by Group Captain H Assudani. They would demonstrate IAF’s ability to project air power in transcontinental deployment of a task force comprising Su-30 MKI, Jaguars, IL-78 tankers and C-17 strategic airlift aircraft.
  7. During the exercise, Su-30 MKI and Jaguars along with USAF fighters will be operating in composite formations under various near realistic scenarios.
  8. The air exercise, from 28 April to 13 May, is seen as a complex and advanced network-centric operation—the toughest test for flying machines and men.
  9. India has desisted from taking its advanced aerial early warning aircraft, Phalcon AWACS, for overseas exercises.
  10. This is the second time that India is participating in such an exercise after 2008. Due to high cost of participation, IAF decided to take part in the exercise once in every five year. Earlier, the participation in the exercise was scheduled in 2013 but the plan was cancelled by the US following budget cuts.
  11. During the Red Flag exercise held at the Nellis Air Force Base in 2008, the IAF contingent was led by Group Captain D Chaudhury.

Recommended For Indian Coast Guard (Pilot) In My 3rd Attempt

Recommended For Indian Coast Guard (Pilot)

I do not fear an army of lion, if it is lead by  a sheep;

But I fear an army of sheep, If it is lead by a lion“.

Hello, my name is Ajay Sureka and I am from Hyderabad. Love for adventure, travelling, sports and feeling of representing the nation made me in love with defence field.

In my previous two attempts i.e SSC Tech (45), Bhopal and TGC 122 (Bangalore) I was conference out but had belief in myself that I could do it. I analysed where I went wrong each time I was conference out and made sure that I didn’t repeat the same mistake.

Now, starts the journey.

I received the call for PSB (ie OIR and PPDT) on January 1st. I was supposed to report at CG Head Quarters at Mumbai on 13 January 2016. Unlike the SSB in Coast Guard both the first two round are elimination rounds.

  1. 1. OIR: The level is bit tough compared to SSB as there are severe time constraints and u can’t come back and refer the question since they are shown only once on projector and last only for 3-4 sec so it was pretty tough but the last 10 questions were like eg-AASSSSDFCV number of S this were bit easy but again u have to be very fast as it last for just 3 sec and then the next question starts. Out of 150 odd only 45 could make it to the next round and then the next day PPDT was scheduled.
  2. PPDT:- We were shown a picture of few men seated around a table with a glass bottle and discussing something. The first 30 secs I made sure that I just observe the picture so that i could figure out the minute details (plz do utilize the time to observe the picture carefully in those 30 sec). I wrote a story related to hero who along with his friends were discussing to launch a start-up.

Now, the GD part starts before the GD part starts there is ample amount of break rather, then wasting it in gossiping I kept on playing that story in my mind so that during narration it comes naturally to me. In my previous two screening I did the same thing just kept on playing the story so that I can narrate confidently. Finally, we were called and the GD begin I gave a confident narration. In GD spoke only twice but made sure that I was listening to everyone (it’s 80% listening nd 20% talking) and made sure that I was helping the person who was unable to come up because GD is all about each and everyone’s view point.
Finally the results were announce and out of 45 there were only 15 who made it to the FSB.

FSB Journey:

I received an email on 2nd feb to report at CG Headquarters on 14 feb 2016. One good thing was that u have plenty amount of time to prepare yourself for psych, interview and gto and I made everyday count. ” I would suggest people to read “My appointment with Pyschologist” as throughout my SSB journey this has been something that has helped me tremendously. It’s freely available on internet u can download a pdf file. My main strategy was to practice for psych and interview so according to that I started practicing for TAT, WAT and SRT regularly just to improve my speed and during my week off I used to go to a place which was very close to my heart surrounded by nature and that peaceful environment, I found it easy to introspect. Kept on analysing myself and what kind of person I am, my likings and dislikings, friends and family how I spend my time and everything about myself and started writing down on a diary. It was like I was discovering myself. Now, I was prepared and ready to go all guns blazing down.

(Day 1):  I reported on 14 Feb (1400 hrs) at Noida, New Delhi. The first day was about document verification and allotment of chest number. There were lodging facilities that were provided by the Coast Guard at a certain cost but I decided that I would stay with my cousin brothers which was easily accessible through Metro trains.

Psych (Day 2):

TAT– Like PPDT I made sure that I utilize the allotted time to observe the picture closely and keeping myself in the picture or identifying myself in the picture I wrote a natural story that came to my mind. In the blank slide again I visualized myself and wrote my journey to SSB how after every failure I kept on improving myself and finally got recommended for SSB.

WAT: attempted 58 out of 60 and wrote the first thought that came to my mind.

SRT: attempted 45 out of 60 but made sure to give quality response. Attempted all 45 sequentially (here quality matters then quantity).

SDT: Prepared beforehand, be very honest while writing this and no human being in this planet is perfect each and every one of us had certain weakness so be aware about what are ur weak points and how u are improving it.

Interview (Day 3):

I have learnt a lot from my previous SSB interviews and also the book “My appointment with psychologist” has helped me a lot in preparing for the interview. My interview was scheduled in the evening so, I had lot of time but at the same time I made sure that I was keeping myself calm. There were people running around asking people what all the interviewer asked but that’s something which is just going to make u nervous so I was just keeping myself away from those guys and JNU being the burning issue almost all the candidates were asked about these. So finally the moment came. The room was a bit awkward as it was inside the container. Yes the container that u see on ships. But it was setup like a room.
Greeted the interviewer and took a seat. I was prepared to answer anything that was fired on me. First time I felt that I am not going to be nervous but would face boldly. And, he fired the first rapid fire question, as I was answering he made another question out of how my answer so that I forget the sequence but once I was done with the question, reverted back to the sequence. Then he used another trick under his sleeve to distract me, when he asked the second rapid fire question he kept on making continuous sound from the button that was hidden and there was like an alarm sound from the bell somewhere hidden inside but to his surprise I didn’t pay any heed to it and kept on answering in the sequence, but still worse was yet to come then while in third rapid fire question while I was answering he totally looked to be disinterested in what I was saying by making different faces. I Knew this are just to distract u , and made sure that my focus always remain on the questions. And I could assure u one thing that during this entire duration I hardly missed in making an eye contact with him. I looked straight in his eyes and answered all the questions (your body language plays an important role in the interview make sure that ur legs are firmly rested on the ground and ur spine touching the chair and most importantly don’t lose the eye contact). Finally, I expected him to ask me the JNU issue that was like the common question but again he never touched on that concept and asked me about India’s GDP. Answered and one of the most important thing there were many question which I didn’t knew straight away said that “I don’t know Sir” (something that I have learned away from my previous SSB in which when I tried to answer something he starting dragging more inside) so felt this was the best reply.and he said come prepared for the questions unanswered. And the last question “What if u don’t get selected”. “I said sir as far as SSB is concerned I know I am going to get selected bcoz I work hard, try hard and belief in myself but in case I get rejected on medical grounds then I will take that and try to get in to DRDO or Civils. Finally the interview came to an end and he stood from his chair and offered me handshake. I knew this is the golden moment for me again the way u shake hand signifies a lot about u and I gave him a firm, confident handshake.

I was happy about the interview.

Day 4 (GTO);- GTO was something I never prepared because this is all about group dynamism or team work (Espirit de Corps). Although I do not play sports but I loved watching football, cricket and this was something that taught me a lot especially I follow MS Dhoni very closely so I have learned a lot.

Kindly listen to the instruction the GTO gives like in our case he said that I might not be there while u are discussing still u should keep continuing. So, once the GD started half of the time he was busy outside but we made sure that we keep on continuing our discussion. It was a peaceful discussion and everyone contributed. Then the GPE started (carefully listen to the narration part before he hands over the hard copy). I made a blunder mistake I misinterpreted and wrote the entire plan based upon what I misinterpreted. I came to know this once the discussion started and I readily accepted my mistake but I made sure that in spite of this I will make sure that my group doesn’t fail to evolve a plan. So, whenever there was a fish market taking place I tried pacifying the group and made sure that everyone speaks. In this way everyone spoke and the discussion ended in a calm way. But the GTO Sir pointed out that u didn’t took time consideration into mind and asked to elect a group a leader. But the GPE ended disastrously as our plans were not workable. We were disappointed but one thing positive about that throughout the discussion we were very cooperative and we listened to each other.

Lecturette: I made sure that I will compensate my mediocre performance in GPE by doing well in lecturette and being an anchor in college fest I was used to speaking in front of people and made sure to maintain an eye contact with everyone. Gave a confident talk and once I was done the GTO asked why I wanted to join defence I said that travelling and sports is something that I wanted to pursue and both of these I will get to pursue in abundance only in defence

Finally, our day was done when the GTO Sir said this was the best group he came across as u all respected each other view’s point and were very cooperative and said that if thing’s would be in his hand he would have recommended everyone. But ur performance doesn’t just depend on GTO ,but assured that majority of the recommendation will be from our group. We, were very elated.

Conference (Day 5):

Just before the start of my chest number they took a tea break. So, it kind of made me more anxious and I was just trying to calm myself by taking deep breaths.

Finally, the bell rang and there I marched greeted everyone and took a seat. My interviewer who was the deputy commandant asked. So “Ajay, what was going in ur mind outside, while u were waiting”. I said sir, I was bit nervous but was trying to calm myself by taking deep breaths. “But why nervous”? I said it’s psychological that u tend to get and then he asked me the question that I didn’t answered in my interview and came with another new technical question. I said “I don’t know Sir” he said u are from ECE branch u must have read somewhere (I don’t know if he was bluffing) but my reply was same I don’t know Sir, Ok, and then he fired an SRT and I retaliated back with a confidence answer and then the deputy commandant looking at the face of commandant who throughout the interaction was observing my body language closely signalled that it’s done.

Finally, the results came and out of 75, 13 got recommended and 3 were from our group. I was happy not that I got recommended but that I have inside me what it takes to be an officer. Believe me, after my first conference out there was not a single day I didn’t think about SSB every day I worked on myself and kept on improving.

One last word ” Work hard, try hard and believe in yourself”. There is a lion inside each and every one of us which is asleep and the only way to wake him up is to discover urself and be yourself.

My CPSS/PABT and my medical experience.

6 Reasons Why Military Wives Are The Best

To any story, there are always be two sides. While one side may be something that everyone knows, the other may not be as highlighted or frequently explored. When it comes to the Armed Forces and the soldiers, the glory, the glamour, the valour and the heroic lifestyle is something that pretty much everyone knows about. There is however, another side of the story, the story of the incredible women who are the better halves of the soldiers. As clichéd as it may sound, I fall short of words to describe the amount of respect I have for the ladies who are the pillars of strength to our soldiers.
Someone once told me that a woman, by default has a lot of responsibilities on her shoulders, which is quite true. But once you are wedded to the Olive Green, well, those responsibilities seem to double, triple rather. I have met several Military wives till date, some coming from a military background themselves; some who have absolutely no idea what the Armed Forces is all about, some working, and some home makers. These ladies, who seem to be so different from one another, are all bound together by their experience of being a military wife.

So what is it that makes these women sound no less than a superwoman? Let’s find out, shall we?!

  1. They have immense patience.
For starters, military wives are highly patient. When you don’t get to meet and even talk to your husband for days, weeks and/or months and you can’t really complain because well field postings are part of the job right? They’ll take their spouses’ call even if it’s at 2am or 3am. They don’t take time for granted. Being patient is then pretty much the only option. Being patient to wait, being patient to be able to get together and be like any other ‘normal’ family, military wives define another parameter of patience.
  2. They are super strong.
Is it easy to be listening to the news updates and reading disturbing news in the papers and still trying to remain calm and hoping that everything would be fine? Probably not. This is something that most of the military wives go through day in and day out. They manage everything at home, manage their work, take care of the kids and do everything possible to make sure that the kids are happy while their father is away. Military wives really hold down the fort at home.
  3. They hold their family together.
Be it the payment of the bills, the grocery shopping, cooking meals, kids’ homework, they keep everything at home running super smooth while the husbands are away and in the absence of the husband, the military wives take the role of dual parents and hold their family together.
  4. They are used to relocating.
Postings and relocations are a part of the military life. The military wives can pack the entire house and then unpack too at the drop of a hat! They are pros at moving from place to place and then adapting to the new situations. They make friends with people fast and turn their new houses into homes for their families.
  5. They are considerate and generous.
The military wives always think of others before themselves. I’ll share a personal incident here. One of my mother’s friend used to pay her maid’s daughter’s school fees and she would say that it’s important for girls to study and educate themselves to become something in life. There are numerous such examples where the military wives have been altruistic and helped those who were in need.
  6. They understand sacrifice.
Military wives recognize and understand the risks faced by their husbands in their jobs, and the idea of loss. They understand the moves, the relocations and living far away from friends and family. They adapt quickly and gracefully to the ups and down associated with the military life and support their husbands through thick and thin.
