Gen Rawat Reviews 69th Army Day Parade at Cariappa Parade Ground

Indian Army celebrated its 69th Army Day today. General Bipin Rawat, Chief of the Army Staff reviewed the Army Day Parade at the Cariappa Parade Ground, Delhi Cantonment and awarded fifteen Sena Medals (including five posthumously) for individual acts of Gallantry and fourteen COAS Unit Citations for the commendable performance of their respective units. Siachen braveheart Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad was awarded the Sena Medal.

The parade was commanded by Maj Gen Rajesh Sahai, Chief of Staff, Delhi Area.  The leading contingent of the parade was formed of the recipients of the Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra Awardees and International Sports Awardees. This was followed by Army contingents which included T-90 Tank BHISHMA, Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP II, Brahmos Missile System, Weapon Locating Radar (SWATHI), Akash Missile System, CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear) Reconnaissance Vehicle, Mobile transportable satellite terminal vehicle and seven marching contingents including mounted horse cavalry.

The Veterans Tableaux, organised by the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans, depicted their role and contributions towards the nation. A motorcycle display by “SHWET ASHW” team of the Army Corps of Military Police was the other attraction during the parade. A Paramotors display was also carried out by a team from the 50 (I) Para Brigade.

The grand finale was last year’s surgical strike demonstration, which showcased combat techniques of the Army sub units. Combat actions included strafing runs depicted by armed helicopter, combat manoeuvres by tracked combat vehicles and special operations including air insertion and extrication of soldiers behind enemy lines.

Earlier in the day, wreaths were laid at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate by the three Service Chiefs to commemorate the Army Day.

Gen Rawat Warns Jawans Using Social Media for Grievances of Punishment

Discouraging soldiers from venting their grievances on official platforms and not air them on social media, Gen Bipin Rawat has warned the guilty of punishment.

Bipin Rawat told soldiers on Army Day that they should contact him “directly” if they were unsatisfied with the internal redressal system.

“Proper channels are in place for jawans to put across their grievances…if they aren’t satisfied with the action taken, they can contact me directly,” Gen Rawat said.

“A few of our friends have taken to social media to speak about their complaints. This affects the soldiers deployed at the borders… You can be held guilty of doing a crime for what you have done and invite punishment,” he warned.

Gen Rawat first talked about the grievances issue two days ago, after a jawan, Lance Naik Yagya Pratap Singh posted a video on social media criticising the misuse of soldiers as ‘sahayaks’ or ‘buddy’ also called ‘batman’.

Today, the Army chief said the use of social media to highlight an issue could have a deleterious effect on “brave soldiers guarding India’s borders.”

The Army officers basically get ‘sahayaks’ for the upkeep of their uniforms and weapons, as well as to act as their radio operators and “buddies” during combat operations. But parliamentary committees and other critics have slammed the ‘sahayak’ system as a vestige of the colonial era. They say officers blatantly misuse their ‘sahayaks’, getting them to do household work, walk the dogs and take kids to school.

But using social media to air grievances isn’t ideal, Gen Rawat said. The Army already has an “excellent” grievances redressal system that will now be supplemented by the suggestions-cum-grievances boxes.

He further added, “We have the capacity to tackle cyber-attacks, yet, we have to be careful against the enemy elements on social media, and also ask our families to be alert about it.”

The Army chief said anyone, irrespective of rank or service, can use this mechanism to write directly to him. Assuring full confidentiality, he said the name of the soldier concerned will be deleted before any action is taken.

Gen Rawat had written an application to the PM in which he said that soldiers, who act as sahayaks, should not be made to polish shoes of officers.

Last week, Gen Rawat said the army, on its part, had already asked the government to examine whether “non-combatants” should replace soldiers as ‘sahayaks’ in peace-time locations while pressing for the system to continue in the field and forward areas.

Helpline to Register Complaints Anonymously Launched By BSF

3

After a BSF Constable Tej Bahadur, alleged in a video that poor-quality food was being served at border posts, BSF has launched two helpline numbers for its personnel to register their complaints. They will be able to register complaints anonymously until 31st January and post that BSF will ensure action in all the genuine complaints.

BSF Director General KK Sharma on Thursday told jawans that they can register complaints on the helplines and that they do not need to identify themselves.

He held a satellite-based ‘sainik sammelan’ (troops conference) with all his field formations in the country from New Delhi where he asked the jawans to let him know their grievances in an absolutely secret manner.

The DG made a specific point and publicised two telephone numbers placed at the force headquarters in New Delhi saying the jawans and officers can register any complaint on these links and their name, rank and designations will not be sought while making these calls.

Sharma also informed the personnel that a special vigilance team has been constituted in the force headed by an Inspector General (IG) rank officer and this unit would be conducting surprise checks and raids at field formations and forward locations of the BSF.

The numbers are not being publicised as it may be misused and it has been circulated during the conference. The BSF DG also explained to his men and women about the multiple forums and avenues available to them for grievance redressal.

While the current numbers are not being publicised, the BSF already have multiple helpline numbers on its site:

Soldier Chandu Chavan To Be Released By Pak Soon: Subhash Bhamre

0

The government’s attempts to diplomatically pursue the release of Indian army soldier Chandu Babulal Chavan have finally paid off. Pakistan military authorities have declared to release the Indian soldier.

Chandu inadvertently strayed across the border last year, on September 29, the same day when the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan. He was posted with the 37 Rashtriya Rifles battalion at Mendhar in Jammu & Kashmir.Chandu

Confirming the release, Pakistan has admitted that Chandu Chavan is alive and that they will soon release him after inquiry, which is nearing completion.

We are trying at the level of DGMO (Director General of Military Operations), to secure his release. So far, the DGMO has spoken to their Pakistan counterpart at least 15 to 20 times.Chandu Chavan

The last time such talks took place was two days ago when Pakistan said that the inquiry is getting over and Chandu Chavan will soon be released.

This information was made public by Union Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre. Chandu hails from Bhamre’s Lok Sabha constituency (Dhule), who have been in regular touch with Chandu’s family.

Sources in Pakistan government, however, said there was no official confirmation on Chavan’s release. “There has been no such development. We haven’t even acknowledged Chandu Chavan’s arrest…The report finds no mention in the Pakistani media,” a source said.

However, Pakistan government sources did confirm that Javed, an Indian national who strayed into Pakistani territory in May 2016 had been released this week.

So far, there is no indication of the possible date or the time-frame within which Chavan could be released. Sources in the Indian Foreign Ministry have said that the possible date of the soldier’s release is still being worked out.
