Up to 63 militants, most of them local residents, have been killed in firefight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir since January this year. According to a police officer, many local militants have been killed in 2015 unlike in the past years. “In 2014, 110 militants were killed in the state and most of them were foreigners. But this year, more local militants were killed,” he said.

The police officer said more locals had joined militancy and they were more active in South Kashmir and parts of North Kashmir. “Since the militants are active in South Kashmir, the frequency of encounters in the region has also increased,” he said.

Militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen, LeT and the Jaish-e-Mohammad are active in South Kashmir comprising Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnag districts, he added.

Police statistics show that 56 militants had been shot dead in encounters with the police, Army, CRPF and the BSF in first seven months of 2015. In the first two weeks of August, seven more militants were killed in encounters with security forces, taking the total number of militants killed by forces this year to 63.

The officer said foreign militants had been killed in firefights with security forces along the LoC and the International Border. The Army said 19 militants, mostly foreigners, had been killed along the LoC thus far. It claimed to have foiled 11 infiltration bids by militants.

According to police, 185-200 militants are active in the state and only 40 percent of them are foreigners.

General Officer Commanding Lt Gen Subrata Saha recently told reporters that educated youths joining militant ranks was a concern for all security agencies.

Indian Air Force Vs Russian Air Force

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) and Indian Air Force (IAF) have hailed the success of a major exercise which saw the deployment of four Sukhoi Su-30MKI ‘Flankers’ to the U.K. to fly with and fight against the RAF’s Eurofighter Typhoon. Exercise Indradhanush IV (Hindi: Rainbow) concluded on July 30 following intensive flying operations with RAF Typhoon squadrons from RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire. Ten IAF crews including 15 pilots and five weapon systems operators flew twice daily missions, often flying all four Su-30s on air-to-air training missions flying beyond visual range (BVR) and within visual range (WVR) engagements with the Typhoon. This is the fourth iteration of the exercise, with the British and Indians taking it in turns to visit each other’s shores.

13 Best Tips For Being A Good Listener In SSB

0
ssb interview tips

Hello Warriors! You cannot become a successful communicator unless you are a good listener. And without good communication, it’s hard for you to find a place in the armed forces. Though we spend a lot of time listening, we take listening for granted. It is very important to remember that effective listening is a very important quality in an officer, both in war and peace.

Listening is an active process that requires you to anticipate a message, set a purpose, make and confirm predictions and inferences, interpret, summarise, evaluate and analyze the information you process. Listening is a very important factor in SSBs as what the officers say you, indirectly they try to take it back from you in the form of GTOs.

Here, I give you some tips to be an effective listener:

  1. Be Attentive: Keep an open mind and stay focused on the speaker and the topic. Pay attention to the person who is speaking. Do not get distracted while you listen.

  2. Maintain Eye Contact: Eye contact keeps you focused and involved in what the speaker says.

  3. Stay Focused: Make sure your mind is focused. Your mind may wander if you think you know what the person is going to say next. But you might be wrong. If you feel that your mind is wandering, change the position of your body and try to concentrate on the speaker’s words.

  4. Focus on content: Try to identify the purpose and the main ideas behind the speech. This will help you to concentrate on the content.

  5. Listen Completely: Do not interrupt the speaker because it will disturb the line of thought. Moreover, when you interrupt, it looks as if you are not listening, even if you really are. Wait till the speaker has finished speaking before you ask your question.

  6. Avoid Emotional Involvement: Try to remain objective and open-minded. When you get emotionally involved in the conversation or speech, you tend to hear what you want to hear not what is actually being said.

  7. Avoid Distractions: Identify the cause of distraction and overcome it, if possible, by solving the problem.

  8. Listen For Main Ideas: The main ideas are the most important points the speaker wants to convey. Pay specail attention to the statements that begin with phrases such as ‘My point is…’ or ‘The thing to remember is…’

  9. Ask Questions: If you are not sure whether you understood what the speaker has said, just ask. It is a good idea to rephrase the speaker’s words so that you can be sure that your understanding is correct. For example, you might ask, ‘When you said that no two groups will be tested at once, did you mean that others are free while one group is performing the tasks?’

  10. Ask Yourself Mental Questions: Active listening keeps you on your toes. Here are some questions you can ask yourself as you listen. ‘What key point is the speaker making?’ ‘How does this fit with what I know from previous knowledge?’

  11. Use The Gap Between The Rate Of Speech And Rate Of Thought: You can think faster than the speaker can talk. Due to this, your mind may wander. With practice, you’ll be able to think about what you are listening to, understand it, and give feedback to the speaker.

  12. Give Feedback: Sit up straight and look directly at the speaker. Now and then, nod to show that you understand. At appropriate points, you may also smile, laugh or be silent. These are all ways to let the speaker know that you are really listening.

  13. Adjust To The Accent: If a native speaks or talks, you may find it difficult to follow the content. This is mainly due to the different manner in which the speaker pronounces individual sounds, words and sentences. The reason is the difference in the way a native speaker stresses words and sentences, and the way we do.

So, we have always said about the importance of good listening and still stress on it. If you listen good, half the battle is won. Try to practise these tips in your day to day lives such as in college or with your family.

12 Tips For Developing Persuasion Skills

12 Tips For Developing Persuasion Skills

SSB success is just your evaluation revolving around the assessors of the selection board who can decide your fate to be in the armed forces. The assessors test you on various aspects and you are recommended only if all the three agrees that you are capable of being an officer. The tests are created in such a way that you can’t fake anything and only your true personality can be assessed.

Persuasion is the soft skill which most candidates exhibit during their GTO tasks like GD and Lecturette, and psychological tests like TAT, WAT, etc.

Thus persuasion skills will be particularly important for your success as a member of a team, when you will often have to gently and tactfully convince the others in the team to accept your point of view or suggestion.

Here I jot some proven persuasion techniques that you can use effectively in your daily interaction with others:

  1. Begin by establishing a rapport with the person with the person you are trying to persuade. Do not turn angry or turn the interaction into a confrontation.

  1. Try to look at what you want you want to persuade someone to do from their point of view. Ask yourself when in GD or group tasks, “Why should they cooperate with me?” and at the same time try to be correct. Don’t just ask them to do whatever you feel like even when you’re wrong.

  1. State clearly the advantages and benefits of doing something. This is most helpful when topics are suggestion based in lecturette.

  1. Support your request or suggestion with some valid arguments and proofs while in GD to avoid fish-market like situations.

  1. Provide facts and figures to get people to come round to your point of view.

  1. Appeal to people’s sense of justice and goodness. Don’t try to be a boss!

  1. Appeal to people’s emotions when you feel like doing so, is right for everyone concerned and that it will work.

  1. Listen carefully to what other person says. This will help you understand how they think ao that you can use other arguments to persuade them.

  1. Listen carefully to the tone of other person and observe his/her body language because this will tell you if he or she is, for example, against an idea, uncertain or open to a discussion. You can then change your strategy.

  1. Be polite and use the right words and body language.

  1. Do not threaten the person you are persuading with negative consequences.

  1. Do not manipulate people. Remember that your aim is to make someone look at something in a way that will benefit you without harming them in anyway.

Always try to use these tips in your daily lives so that you don’t have to struggle while in SSB. If you have any queries or questions, drop me a message through my social links below.12 Tips For Developing Persuasion Skills

Success Story Of Capt. (Dr.) Lily Swain

0
Dr. Lily Swain

You might have heard the phrase ” Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied”. But, this is not true for success. Success is delayed, but it is never denied. The quantum of efforts you put in for a specific goal decides your success. Having said that, I would like to describe the success story of Capt.(Dr.) Lily Swain, who despite various difficulties could manage to taste the success. Before I could tell you the success story, here is a small record of her family and educational background.

Dr. Lily swain comes from a family wherein the importance is given to education. Her father who is a retired army personnel(Sub Maj) is into real estate and mother is a home manager. Her younger brother is a graduate in mechanical engineering and is preparing for the civil services, and younger sister who is dynamic, young and charming is also into medical field and currently she is pursuing her medicine from Govt. Medical College, Nizamabad.
She(Dr.Lily) completed her Grade 10 from Kendriya Vidyalaya Air Force Station, Hyderabad  ,wherein the atmosphere was really very good, the teachers were supportive in every aspect be it the sports, culture or academics. She passed out successfully in 2006 by securing 90% in the CBSE board examination. Then she moved into a very different board wherein she opted for BiPC(Biology,Physics and Chemistry) which is the mandatory group one should be selecting in order to qualify himself/herself to appear in the medical entrance examination. After two years of hard work she passed her intermediate exam with an aggregate of 96%.Subsequently, she appeared for various competitive examinations of medicine but could’nt manage to secure one.At this stage, she was disheartened but did not loose hope and decided to drop in a year which proved to be a success.
Dr. Lily who is a young medical professional obtained her medical degree(MBBS) from Mediciti Institute Of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad , after putting strenuous efforts for close to five and a half years.Being from the defence background she had a strong desire to join the armed forces.Having selected BiPC stream at 10+2 level was the end as conceived by her.But she never knew that one can even join the forces as a doctor until she came across the advertisement of Indian Army-AMC SSC entry calling young medical graduates to join the forces.
What happened next? Did she apply for the entry? If yes then what was the result?
Well, she ap[plied for it and the interview for the same was held at RESEARCH AND REFFERAL HOSPITAL, New Delhi. She was recommended by the medical board on 02nd May 2015.Unfortunately, she was declared medically unfit and was given a temporary rejection for low hemoglobin count and instructed to appear before the Appeal Medical Board after 45 days.
The appeal medical board at Command Hospital,Bangaluru, declared  her medically fit for the services. Now, the main hurdle was yet to be crossed and what was that?.Yes, you are thinking right-its the merit list. The first merit list was out only in June 3rd week and she was disheartened to learn that her name doesn’t figure in the list of successful candidates. However, her morale was very high and she started preparing for her PG entrance examination. It was only on 24th July 2015 that the second list was out and she sailed through it. Dr.Lily swain’s, appointment as a Captain in the Indian Army(Army Medical Corps)-Military Hospital, Kirkee, justifies the initial two lines of this article.Dr. Lily Swain
The motive behind writing this was to create awareness among the medical professionals to join the forces.I considered ssb crack as the right platform to put up my words. We know that ssb crack is accessed by many youths aspiring to become defence forces officers and they do have their brothers and sisters who are into medical field. So what are you waiting for, just go and inform your beloved ones about this if they are not aware and grab the next opportunity.
Final, few words you should remember. If you think you have it in you, then you will succeed for sure. For details about the AMC SSC entry you can login to www.amcsscentry.gov.in. I would be truly humbled and delighted if this one proves to be a turning point in somebody else life.
Jai Hind!

Armed Forces Losing An Officer A Day To Early Retirement

Armed Forces Losing An Officer A Day To Early Retirement. For over three years now, one officer from India’s defence forces has quit each day. The largest number of officers seeking early retirement from the armed forces belong to the Army.
There is, however, a silver lining. The numbers of officers seeking early retirement has shown a declining trend. These facts were shared by defence minister Manohar Parrikar in a written response to a query raised in Parliament by BJP MP from Haridwar, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. Raising a question in Parliament, Nishank sought to know details of vacancies in the armed forces. In March this year, answering a query raised in the Rajya Sabha, Parrikar had said that the armed forces faced shortage of over 11,000 officers.

In his written response to Nishank, the defence minister said that in 2012, 564 officers opted to exit before their set date of retirement; in 2013, 448 officers sought early retirement, and in 2014 the number was 319. So far, in 2015, 97 officers have opted for premature retirement. That in effect is more than an officer retiring prematurely every day in the last three and half years.
The highest number of those seeking to quit were from the Army, at 664 between 2012 and 2015. Retired Lt General KK Khanna, sharing his concern over the large number of early exits from the armed forces, said, “Dissatisfaction simmers when officers are overlooked for promotion. There are fewer vacancies in the higher ranks, and only those high in merit have assured career progression. This sometimes nudges officers to quit and pursue something else.”
Khanna, a former commandant of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, said this was compounded by the fact that there is these days no dearth of opportunities for officers wishing to pursue a career, for instance, in the aviation industry or merchant navy. “Dissatisfaction, however, is not confined to the mid-level, colonel-rank officers. It is present even among higher levels,” Khanna said.
Besides the aviation sector and the merchant navy, officers with experience in the armed forces also find attractive opportunities in the corporate sector and industry, fuelling premature retirement plans. Retired Brigadier AN Acharya said: “The glory and charm of service in the armed forces has taken a hit for many reasons. Even if one were to retire as general, there are many things one loses out on, in the end. Those who still have time in their favour, at the middle of their careers, might opt for a corporate job or pursue education to re-skill themselves for entry into the service sector or business.”
The defence minister, in his response to the status of vacancies in the armed forces, said the Army has 9,642 vacant officer positions and 23,909 vacancies among other ranks. Navy has 1,179 officer vacancies and 11,653 vacant slots for sailors; the Air Force has 6,664 airmen slots vacant. The minister’s response showed that over 68,331 recruits were under training for the Army; there are 2,247 trainees set to enter the Navy, and 6,152 the Air Force.
