GD: Which is Better Foreign Acquisition or Indigenous Production

0
GD-Which-is-Better-Foreign-Acquisition-or-Indigenous-Production

GD: Which is Better Foreign Acquisition or Indigenous Production. Foreign Acquisition: India after being independent, acquired jets, artillery guns, jeeps, etc. from foreign countries. These added strength to the armed forces but simultaneously became a matter of discussion over the cases and controversies that followed these deals.

Pros:
Fast Improvement in Military Strength – After independence, when India was not economically stable, faced a war with Pakistan and after 15 years India faces a war with China. These wars initiated a requirement of modern weapons and machines for battle. So India acquired MiG-21, MiG 29, jeeps and later on acquired Bofors gun, Mirage 2000, INS Viraat, Jaguar etc. These weapons made India fully prepared to face the war and also gain victory.

Improve Relations – India has acquired many warheads from Russia, France, U.S. and other countries. These deals have improved the relations of India with these developed economies and also tightened military relations with them.

Cons:
Scams and Scandals

  • Jeep Scandal – Just after achieving independence, Indian government faced a major corruption scandal that got surfaced which was India’s first biggest corruption scandal worth Rs 80 lakhs for 200 jeeps.
  • Bofors Scam – Bofors guns, which were the game changer in Kargil war, were also hit by corruption. The deal was between India and Sweden for 410 field howitzer guns. Some government officials were accused of receiving kickbacks (or you can say bribe) for finalizing the deal.
  • Augusta Westland Scam – A fresh example, named as chopper gate, is the deal between India and Augusta Westland for Rs. 36 billion. Some politicians and military officials were accused of accepting a bribe for finalizing this contract of 12 Agusta Westland AW101 helicopter which has to be used for VVIP duties.GD-Which-is-Better-Foreign-Acquisition-or-Indigenous-Production

Controversies –   Rafale controversy was a citation of it. Rafale’s deal was started in a different way and came to a different end unexpectedly. The deal was for 126 jets out of which 18 will be transported to India while left 108 will be developed by HAL in India. But money related issues and DASAULT’s rejection for taking a guarantee of those 108 jets was the cause of delays in the deal. And when P.M. Narendra Modi visited France this year, he signed the deal of 36 jets which would be acquired by India in fly away conditions. The deal is still covered on the pages.

Indigenous Production
These days India is preforming well in producing warheads indigenously, which seems to be a better option than acquiring from foreign nations. Prime minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ has taken India to a next level of self-dependency. Tejas LAC, ARJUN tank, INS Vikrant are some of the examples of India’s fight for a self-productive drive.

Decreases Dependency– Indigenous development of warheads decreases the dependency of the Indian government over other countries for modern technology and weapons. This will make India a self-dependent country.

Increases Technological Advancement– The technological advancement in indigenous development lures the new generation towards the nation’s defense production. Idea forge is a company formed by IIT Powai, alumni collaborated with DRDO in developing UAV Netra, with a major purpose of anti-terrorism and counter insurgency.

Increases Military Dominance– Indigenous development of military weapons with new technology and efficient performance of warheads makes a distinct image of India in the world. India has world’s third largest army and world’s biggest volunteer army. If India got required weapons indigenously, then India will become incomparably strong.

Well, some short comings are also there in the case of indigenous development like Indian Army had sent back Arjun tank back to DRDO after encountering many problems in it. But up-gradation can rectify the problem in machines. As India is going fast in economic and military development, it is necessary to become self-dependent and modernize its weapons.

MP Dr. Ravindra Babu Pandula About INDIAN ARMY

In NewsHour one of the MP Ravindra Babu Pandula of Telugu Desam Party in his defence said that people of this country join Indian army just to get subsidised alcohol and free rations. This doesn’t make me angry because he said so about army knowing the fact that he doesn’t know anything about what Indian army is, what makes me angry is how such people are opted by us. How such people reach such a position in the society. It’s evident that Ravindra Babu Pandula is the dumbest MP I have every heard of.

Do Army Require War to Retain Respect?

0
Do-Army-Require-War-to-Retain-Respect

Do Army Require War to Retain Respect? Indian Armed Forces are the backbone of India and it always stays ahead in all situation which is not uncontrollable or unable to handle. Indian Army is one of the strongest forces in the world with wide range of weapons and sufficient manpower to secure the nation and avert any attack. India has gone through many wars after it got independence in 1947. Three with Pakistan and one with China and these wars have taught India a lot of warfare and soldiers up-gradation.

In a recent statement by our Defense Minister Manohar Parikkar, which stats that Indian Army’s respect has fallen down because it  has not gone through any war in last few decades.

Well, this statement has made a huge space in media and raised many arguments and issues regarding Indian Army.

Army need a more than expected funds and infrastructure to come equal with its growing rivals, China and Pakistan. As we have seen that India is lagging behind both these rivals in the race of nuclear warheads. In north east states, there are some of the areas where terrains are so tough that Indian Army need 1 day to reach. Whereas China on the opposite side of border can reach in just few hours. On the other hand, the issue of One Rank One Pension came to limelight as retired soldiers are protesting for its implementation. Government as allocated just Rs. 1000 crore in the budget for OROP, but actually it requires about Rs 8500 crore to manage the need of scheme.Do-Army-Require-War-to-Retain-Respect

Well, Indian Army don’t need any war to regain respect as the respect still has the same level as earlier. The thing that matters is the focus on military to equalize the strength with the growing enemy. Daily, many soldiers sacrifice their life to protect the nation and creates a void of emotions among family and friends. It doesn’t means that would not be given respect because they didn’t fought a war. They deserve the respect because they did what nobody can do for those whom he call his brothers and sisters surviving freely, leaving their security on his shoulders. Army’s role is not just limited to security. When disasters, armed forces reaches faster than anyone. During J&K flood, Nepal earthquake, Hud hud storm hit Andhra Pradesh and many more examples are sufficient to prove the position of forces in Indian status. Indian Navy also made Indians in Yemen to meet their families in India. These activities makes armed forces an elite organization of India. And, an incomparable job that they do, deserve a salute.

Respect is not about the time of task we pays, but it is about the type of task we do.

Indian Army has always been a respectful organization and will always be. The courage, sacrifice and dedication for duty makes them more than a man. There have been some delays in the fund allocation but, Army is still strong and will always be in the future.

Why India Need To Bother About China?

Why-India-need-to-bother-about-China

China, one of the neighbors of India which shares about 4000 km of border with India. China has been the biggest contender for India as it is the nation who defeated India in 1962 Indo-Sino war. Well, stats shows that China’s army counts the biggest army in the world and also the tempo of the military modernization is a matter of concern for other nations. The increased Pakistan- China friendship and China’s expanding military power is an alarm for India. Till now, this year has been remarkable in the military development of China.

Why India Need To Bother About China?

S-400 Deal – S-400 air defense system is a master piece of the Russian military which is famous for its new and superb technology in warfare. This system will promote the air dominance of China along its border. Its 400 km range is the eye pointing feature which makes a large area under its range including New Delhi also. Also, it will protect the China’s new air defense identification zone in The East China Sea. Currently, China has S-300 system with a range of 300 km which can only target Taiwan’s northwestern coast and also makes capital of India and South Korea out of reach. But procurement of S-400 will help it to extend its target range.Why-India-need-to-bother-about-China

Artificial Islands in The South China SeaRecently media reported that the construction of artificial islands in The South China Sea is almost completed. China’s foreign minister said that the facilities will be built on the island including military and defense also. The construction of these islands was started after China reclaimed about 2000 acres in disputed sea (according to U.S.) last year. These islands were built to bolster its position against other East Asian countries and United States.  In May 2015, the presence of two large artillery vehicles on one of the artificial island became a headline.

Construction of all Civilian Ships According to Military Standards – China is discussing for National Defense Transport Law, which will allot money to shipbuilders for additional money required for construction of civilian ships according to military standards and pattern. This will enhance the potential of the civilian ships to work as a military ship. The law will also provide insurance to the ship builder in case of any tragedy or damage occurs to the ship. U.S. had also used its civilian fleets for maritime tasks during World War II.

Successful Trail of Hypersonic Glide Vehicle – The confirmation of test of “Wu-14” (dubbed by U.S) held in mid of June this year. It is the 4th test of PLA in 18 months. It can go up to the speed of 10 Mach. The special feature is maneuverable ability which helps it to penetrate through a missile defense system. Well, it seemed to be a response to the continued interference of U.S. in The South China Sea (U.S spy plane’s flight in The South China Sea). This test shows the positive progress of Chinese military.

India is the fastest growing economy in the world and is heading to a bright future. But it’s better to concentrate on development after ensuring its safety and defense preparedness, especially when it have a neighbor like China. So Indian armed forces need to be more alert and emphasize on their weapons and strategies to pacify any action from neighbors.

Indian Ocean Region – Possession of the Powerful

0
Indian--Ocean-Region–Possession-of-the-Powerful

“The true power lies with the country that dominates the seas” – by Alfred Mahan, US Navy flag Officer. India are China are biggest contender in the race of military and economic platforms. China these days got lots of publicity regarding the issue of South China Sea that started with the Senkaku Island. This issue made China’s relation a bit sour with Vietnam and some other countries and recently with India too. More over China’s military extension toward Indian borders is also a matter of concern. Construction of railway network near border and proposed railway network to its close friend Pakistan was revealed in Sino-Pak Economic Corridor. Indian Ocean also plays a major role in relations of these two countries. China see Indian Ocean as the best way to speed up trade. China’s 60% energy import passes through sea routes which will increase to 75% in upcoming years. So, China is taking keen interest in expanding its arms towards Indian Ocean for ease of trade and domination over Indian Ocean region.

String of Pearls by China

An initiative of China where each pearl is meant for ports having investment from China. The revival of maritime silk route is seen as an attempt to counter “String of Pearls” argument. The motive of this strategy include different phases. According to the sources the motives ranges from resources and commercial interests to diplomatic and finally security and military interests. Well this step is to pacify China’s rival India’s developing and strengthening status. Pakistan, an all-weather friend of China got investment for construction of port in Gwadar. China has also made investments in Chittagong in Bangladesh, Kyaukphyu in Myanmar, and Hambantota in Sri Lanka. The major aim behind string of pearls seems to impose dominance over South China Sea.Indian--Ocean-Region–Possession-of-the-Powerful

Iron Curtain by India

To deter Chinese presence in Indian Ocean region (IOR) and to become a true blue water navy, India made a strategy to neutralize the Chinese effect in IOR. This strategy was termed as IRON CURTAIN. India is currently discussing on fields of investment in Nepal Bhutan and Bangladesh. India had started construction of switte port in 2010 in Myanmar. Along with this, India became successful in setting up posts in Mauritius, Seychelles, Mozambique and Madagascar. India has also got berthing right in omen and Vietnam which will help India in expanding its influence.

Conclusion

Indian Ocean Region is always seen like a treasure box due to resource deposits, trade and military’s point of view. India’s step to construct Chabahar port also made a positive step toward expanding strength. As well as India’s cordial military relations with Mauritius (exported Indian coast guard’s barracuda) , Seychelles to whom India gifted PS constant petrol vessel last year and Dornier 228 maritime reconnaissance aircraft in 2013 and similar relations with other countries in contact with Indian Ocean. While China want its dominance in Indian Ocean to occupy a major position in trade and commerce. If China has largest army then, India possess great minds. India’s foreign policy has played a crucial role in establishing sound relations with its neighbors. But still India is boosting its military and defense sectors for bad times.

INS VIRAAT – A Lost Tale for Indian Navy

0
INS-VIRAAT–A-Lost-Tale-for-Indian-Navy

Indian Navy has many beasts and long history behind them. Some of them are retired, some are under development and some are serving in Navy. But some ships have proved that ‘Old is Gold’. Here we are talking about INS Viraat.

It was expected to be decommissioning INS Viraat by 2015-16, but some upgradation made in it increased its life till 2020. As the maintenance cost of the ship was increasing, the decommissioning was later scheduled in 2016-17. Well, the future of the ship is assumed to be same as that of old INS Vikrant which hard to convert in a museum. Indian Navy gave three options for INS Viraat after decommissioning- sell it in an auction, making it a museum, or using it for target practice. But the idea of converting to a museum seems to be a bad choice as seen in the case of INS Vikraant. According to a Navy official, the average shelf life of an aircraft carrier is approx. 25 years. It has completed more than 50 years and has been in Indian Navy for more than 25 years which makes it different and special in the world. But, INS has over lived its life span. After the deal of Admiral Gorshkov for Indian navy as INS Vikramaditya, Indian Navy emphasized on new and good ships.INS-VIRAAT–A-Lost-Tale-for-Indian-Navy

Its replacement will be INS Vikrant which was undocked a few days ago and is undergoing trails.

INS Viraat is the oldest aircraft carrier in the world which was built in the British era and still serving in Indian Navy. It is expected to get decommissioned in 2016-17. It was commissioned in 1959 in Royal Navy as HMS Hermes and later in 1987, it was transferred to India in a deal worth $ 63 million. It had got a few breaks during service, like in 1993, when water flooded into its engine but later it came back in service in 1995 and between 1999 & 2001 after which it came with several new upgraded parts extending its life till 2010. Latest rift was seen in 2012 which increased its life till 2016. It has four onboard squadrons of INAS 330, 552, 321 and 300. And still, it supports Indian Navy with INS Vikramaditya in service. INS Viraat has done a great job during its service and is going to leave the Indian Navy in next few years.

Indian Navy has seen many wars and has made India proud on every platform. But, as the need of modern and highly strong weapons and fleets is observed, then the aging machines need to be replaced. Compromise with national security is never spared. Not only Indian Navy but Indian Air Force is also heading to replace its aircrafts with indigenous and foreign bought aircrafts. Similarly, army is also on the way to upgrade the existing weapons and including new artillery guns and missiles for strengthening itself.  Replacement is a rule of nature and it is essential for survival. Either you adapt according to the requirement or get replaced. So Viraat is going to be decommissioned and will be known for its exceptionally long life it served in Indian waters.

Story Of Major Udai Singh PARA Special Force

Major Udai Singh SC, SM was born at 2.15 pm on Monday October 7, 1974 in Allahabad. He had a happy, contented childhood spent in small cantonment towns across the country. St. Patricks at Deolali was his first school, after which he studied at St Georges, Agra & APS Delhi. His formative & most memorable years were spent at the Army Public School, Dagshai from where he passed out in 1992. Not one for academics he excelled in games & sports & other extra curricular activities. He loved his alma mater & was forever grateful for the opportunity he’d had, taking time off to visit it as often as he could in the years to follow.

Udai, graduated from Deshbandhu College, Delhi with an honors degree in Political Science and was soon absorbed as a management trainee with the Taj Mansingh, Delhi. What he aspired to was a career in the Special Forces of the Indian Army

“I do not wish to spend my life waiting on hotel guests” he’d say. “I want to be that 5 star guest”.

His ambition was partly fulfilled on passing out from the IMA in June 1997. He was commissioned into the first battalion of the Parachute Regiment.

“My life in the army”, he confessed to a friend, ” is doomed if I do not clear the probation”.

Clear it he did and was with the paltan for five wonderful years before volunteering for the Special Group – the mavericks. He soon became one of them.

His brief career was spent almost entirely in the mountains of Kashmir with a few months here and there given to the short courses run by the army. He did the free fall & the para jumps along with a course in deep sea diving.

He loved what he did never regretting for an instant his choice of career. His life in the army was a source of great pride and enthusiasm. It was all that he had ever wished it to be.Story Of Major Udai Singh PARA Special Force

Story Of Major Shaitan Singh, Param Vir Chakra

0

Major Shaitan Singh was commanding a company of infantry battalion deployed at a height of about 17,000 feet. The locality was isolated from the main defended sector and consisted of five defended platoon positions.

During November 1962, the Chinese subjected the company position to heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire and attacked in overwhelming strength in successive waves. Against heavy odds, our troops beat back the enemy attack. During the action, Major Shaitan Singh dominated the scene of operations, and moved at great personal risk from one platoon post to another sustaining the morale of his hard-pressed platoon posts. While doing so, he was seriously wounded but continued to encourage and lead his men who, following his brave example fought gallantly and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. For every man lost by us, the enemy lost four to five . When Major Shaitan Singh fell disabled by wounds in his arms and abdomen, his men tried to evacuate him but came under heavy machine gun fire. Maj Shaitan Singh ordered his men to leave him to his fate in order to save their lives.PARAM VIR CHAKRA Major Shaitan Singh, PVC (Posthumous)

Major Shaitan Singh’s supreme courage, leadership and exemplary devotion to duty inspired his company to fight almost to the last man. The heroic resistance put up by this gallant soldier with his company against the assault of more than one thousand Chinese, is not only a tribute to the Regiment, but also a matter of pride for soldiers, the World over. These brave soldiers fought to the last man and last round. For this historic battle Major Shaitan Singh was awarded Param Vir Chakra. Undoubtedly, the battle of Rezang La is a great feat of leadership, courage and unswerving determination in the annals of Military History. Appropriately the plaque at the memorial of Rezang La says: –

How can a man die better
than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
and the temple of his Gods”
