Brazilian Air Force Successfully Launches Suborbital Rocket from Barreira do Inferno Launch Center

In a significant advancement for Brazil’s aerospace capabilities, the Brazilian Air Force has successfully launched a suborbital rocket utilizing locally-developed technologies. The mission took place at the “Barreira do Inferno” Launch Center in Parnamirim, strategically located along the country’s eastern coastline. This facility, known for its extensive history in aerospace launches, continues to affirm its vital role in Brazil’s growing space industry.

During the mission, which lasted approximately six minutes, technicians and engineers carefully monitored the rocket’s trajectory. They conducted critical testing on the telemetry and radar response systems, ensuring that all operations proceeded smoothly throughout the flight. Notably, the rocket spent nearly three minutes—2 minutes and 50 seconds—within the realm of space.

Highlighting the mission’s significance, Brigadier Maurício Augusto Silveira de Medeiros, Director of the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology, stated, “We are breaking paradigms and creating new perspectives for the future.” He emphasized the capabilities of the Barreira do Inferno facility, reinforcing that the successful launch demonstrates its readiness for such events. The facility has an impressive track record, having supported over 3,000 launches across 655 operations and facilitated the tracking of 265 spacecraft missions.

The Brazilian Air Force collaborated with local industries through the Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE) to conduct a series of tests on the S-30 family of sounding rockets. The vehicle that was recently launched, the VS-30, is a single-stage, solid-propellant suborbital rocket designed to carry payloads of up to 330 kilograms (727 pounds) to altitudes of 160 kilometers (99.4 miles). Prior launches have also involved the VSB-30, a rocket featuring solid propulsion stages that can transport loads of up to 400 kilograms (881 pounds) to altitudes exceeding 270 kilometers (167 miles).

The latest launch forms a part of Operation Potiguar, an initiative aimed at bolstering Brazil’s suborbital capabilities. A second phase of this operation is scheduled for late 2025, during which the Air Force intends to test another VS-30 rocket. This upcoming mission will focus on validating the recovery system for the vehicle’s upper section, which is specially equipped with an experimental compartment and electronic systems that interface with payloads.

As Brazil continues to advance its aerospace technology and capabilities, this successful suborbital launch marks a pivotal step forward in its ambitious goal of becoming a recognized player in the global space sector.
