Indian Navy Day is commemorated annually on December 4, marking the anniversary of ‘Operation Trident’ during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. This operation involved a strategic attack by the Indian Navy on the port city of Karachi, symbolizing India’s burgeoning naval capabilities and serving as a major military victory. Modi’s post further articulated the Navy’s commitment to ensuring national safety, security, and prosperity, accompanied by a video that encapsulated his message.

The observance of Indian Navy Day not only honors the officers dedicated to the nation’s coastal defense but also pays tribute to the bravery and resilience of those who serve under challenging conditions to protect maritime security. The Indian Navy plays a vital role in promoting peace across the Indian Ocean and facilitating safe navigation for global trade while fostering international maritime cooperation.

In conjunction with Navy Day celebrations, significant developments are underway regarding the modernization of the Indian Navy. The establishment plans to finalize deals amounting to ₹90,000 crore for the procurement of 26 Rafale Marine combat aircraft. Additionally, discussions are ongoing for the acquisition of three more Scorpene-class submarines, with deals anticipated to be finalized next month, as revealed by the Navy Chief, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, during a press briefing on December 2.

The Indian Navy is currently negotiating with France concerning the acquisition of the Rafale Marine fighter jets and is also in talks with French Naval Group to construct the submarines at Mazagon Dockyards Limited. These new submarines are expected to supplement the six Scorpene-class submarines that have already been successfully completed at the dockyard, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the Navy’s operational readiness and capability.
