Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machines Ltd has achieved a significant milestone by developing India’s first indigenous 7.62x51mm belt-fed medium machine gun (MMG) in collaboration with the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune.
Following the success of its ASMI 9x19mm submachine gun, the company’s new MMG offers both single-shot and automatic firing modes, compatibility with Indian and NATO standard ammunition, and an effective range of 1,800 meters. Capable of firing 800 rounds per minute, it features a 250-round belt capacity with the option to link additional belts for sustained combat use.

Designed for versatility, the MMG can be mounted on ground vehicles, naval vessels, and aircraft, and functions in extreme conditions from -40°C to +55°C. The Indian Army, after extensive testing, has placed a ₹17.7 crore order for precision components to upgrade its in-service MMGs using Lokesh’s lighter, more reliable subassemblies.
According to company director M. Srinivas, the new MMG is about 25% lighter than current models, with a single-piece machined receiver, chromium-plated barrel for enhanced durability, quick-change barrel system, and a three-position gas regulator for improved efficiency.
The order marks another success for the CNC machine manufacturer as it expands its footprint in India’s defence manufacturing sector.
