Security forces foiled a major infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gurez sector, neutralising two terrorists during a joint operation on Wednesday.
According to the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, alert troops spotted suspicious movement near the LoC in Bandipora district. When challenged, the infiltrators opened indiscriminate fire, prompting a swift and effective retaliation by the Army. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were gunned down.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police (JKP), following credible intelligence inputs about a likely infiltration attempt.
“Based on intelligence provided by JKP regarding likely infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and J&K Police in Gurez Sector. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged the terrorists, who opened fire. The troops responded effectively, neutralising two terrorists. Operation is still in progress,” the Chinar Corps posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Recent Infiltration Attempts Along LoC
This latest operation comes just weeks after a series of infiltration bids foiled by Indian security forces along the LoC:
- August 13: A soldier was martyred during an exchange of fire as the Army stopped infiltrators in the Uri sector of Baramulla district.
- July 30: Two heavily armed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists were killed in a gunfight during Operation ShivShakti in Poonch district.
- July 28: Security forces eliminated three hardcore terrorists in Srinagar forests, all linked to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
The Army has maintained that these infiltration attempts are part of Pakistan-sponsored efforts to push terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir and destabilise the region.
Strategic Significance
Military officials said the latest encounter in Gurez marks another major setback to Pakistan-backed terrorist organisations, reinforcing India’s strong counter-infiltration grid along the LoC.
With multiple infiltration bids being foiled in recent weeks, security forces remain on high alert across the LoC to prevent militants from crossing into Kashmir ahead of the winter months.
