In a landmark development for both military logistics and Kashmir’s economy, the Indian Army has launched its first-ever dedicated freight train on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). The train, which ran from BD Bari to Anantnag between September 12 and 13, transported 753 metric tonnes of Advance Winter Stocking (AWS) to ensure frontline units are fully prepared for the approaching winter.
Strategic Shift in Army Logistics
This initiative replaces traditional convoys that often faced delays due to snow-blocked mountain passes, marking a major strategic shift in the Army’s winter preparedness. The rail-based supply chain provides speed, efficiency, and reliability, reinforcing operational readiness even under extreme weather conditions.

Supporting Kashmir’s Apple Economy
On its return journey, the freight train carried Kashmiri apples to markets across India, offering fruit growers faster and safer access to national supply chains. For decades, farmers struggled with transportation bottlenecks caused by highway closures on NH-44. The Army’s logistics initiative now doubles as a lifeline for the region’s economy.

Leaders Welcome the Move
Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hailed the development, calling for special refrigerated cargo trains to further support perishable goods transport. He thanked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and discussed road-logistics improvements with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, emphasizing the urgency of stabilizing supply chains for growers.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also flagged off the first dedicated parcel train from Budgam to Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar, highlighting the transformative impact of rail freight on Kashmir’s horticulture sector.

Symbol of Resilience and Integration
Beyond logistics, the freight train represents India’s resilience and national integration. It enhances military preparedness while uplifting Kashmir’s economy, symbolizing the Army’s dual role in defending the nation and supporting its socio-economic progress.
