The Ministry of Defence has inked a ₹2,095.70 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of INVAR anti-tank guided missiles, giving a major boost to the Indian Army’s armoured warfare capabilities.

The missiles will equip the Army’s T-90 main battle tanks, significantly enhancing their precision strike capability and lethality in mechanised operations. The deal has been concluded under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, reaffirming the government’s push toward self-reliance and strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing.

Produced at BDL’s domestic facilities, the INVAR missile system features all key components — including guidance and propulsion units — sourced from within India. The weapon is a laser-guided anti-tank missile capable of engaging both stationary and moving armoured targets. Fired directly from the T-90’s gun barrel, it enables rapid response and improved accuracy in high-intensity combat scenarios.

Designed to defeat modern armoured platforms equipped with explosive reactive armour, the INVAR system enhances tactical superiority and survivability for tank crews. The Ministry said the acquisition will significantly strengthen the Indian Army’s readiness in areas where armoured manoeuvre warfare remains critical.

Bharat Dynamics Limited, a long-standing supplier of guided weapon systems to the armed forces, continues to expand its role in India’s missile ecosystem through this contract. The deal also aligns with the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at reducing import reliance and supporting indigenous research, development, and production across the defence sector.

The contract adds to a series of recent modernisation efforts undertaken by the MoD to upgrade India’s missile, armour, and combat readiness profile.
