Commodore R Venkatesan assumed charge as the Director of the Centre for Indigenisation and Self-Reliance (CISR) at Coimbatore on January 12, 2026, marking a key leadership transition at the Indian Navyโs nodal unit for indigenisation initiatives.
An accomplished engineer officer, Cmde Venkatesan is an alumnus of the Naval College of Engineering, IIT Kharagpur, and the Naval War College. He brings with him extensive operational and staff experience across a wide spectrum of naval establishments.

His key afloat appointments include serving as Engineer Officer onboard three Indian Navy warships. Ashore, he has held diverse and important staff billets at Naval Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command, Andaman and Nicobar Command, naval repair yards, research and development organisations, trial and training units, as well as the material organisation.
The Centre for Indigenisation and Self-Reliance functions as a nodal field unit of the Indian Navy, spearheading efforts to promote indigenous design, development, and production of defence equipment in line with national self-reliance goals.
Cmde Venkatesanโs appointment is expected to further strengthen the Navyโs indigenisation drive, foster closer collaboration with industry and academia, and accelerate the transition towards technologically advanced, domestically produced naval systems.
