The Indian Air Force (IAF) will mark a historic milestone at the 77th Republic Day Parade with the first-ever inclusion of nine women Agniveers in the IAF band contingent on January 26, 2026.
In another significant first, Flying Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar will unfurl the national flag alongside Droupadi Murmu during the ceremonial parade at Kartavya Path, underscoring the growing role of women in the Indian Air Force.
IAF Band and Marching Contingent
The IAF band, led by Sergeant Charles Antony Daniel, will complement the 144-member IAF marching contingent, which will be led by Squadron Leader Jagdesh Kumar.
The band will comprise 75 personnel, including 66 Agniveers and nine women Agniveers, with the remaining members being air warriors. This marks the first time women Agniveers will perform as part of the IAF band at the Republic Day Parade.
Additionally, Squadron Leader Nikita Choudhary, Flight Lieutenant Prakhar Chandrakar, and Flight Lieutenant Dinesh Murali will serve as supernumerary officers in the IAF contingent.
Grand Flypast with 29 Aircraft
The Republic Day flypast will feature a total of 29 aircrafts, including 16 fighter jets, four transport aircraft, and nine helicopters, organised into eight formations.
According to officials, the flypast will be conducted in two phases—four formations during the parade and four after its conclusion. A special spearhead formation will fly during the parade to mark the success of Operation Sindoor, conducted in May last year.
IAF Highlights Growing Role of Agniveers
Air Commodore Imran H. Zaidi, from the Directorate of Ceremonial at Air Headquarters, said the participation of women Agniveers reflects the Air Force’s commitment to inclusivity and professional excellence.
Sharing his experience, Squadron Leader Jagdesh Kumar said, “It is my first time in a Republic Day Parade, and I feel extremely proud to represent my Service on Kartavya Path.” He added that the contingent begins rehearsals as early as 4 am, putting in 7–8 hours of daily practice to ensure flawless coordination.
The historic inclusion of women Agniveers in the IAF band, combined with a powerful aerial display, will make the Republic Day Parade 2026 a defining moment in the Indian Air Force’s journey towards greater representation and operational excellence.
