In a significant step towards easing long-standing border tensions, India and China have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh during the latest round of Corps Commander-level talks.
The discussions were held on October 25 at the Moldo-Chushul border point on the Indian side โ the first such engagement since the Special Representativesโ dialogue between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in August this year.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the meeting took place in a โcordial and constructive atmosphere.โ Both sides noted the progress achieved since the 22nd round of talks in October 2024 and acknowledged that peace and tranquillity had largely been preserved in border areas.
The MEA further stated that both countries agreed to continue utilising existing communication and coordination mechanisms to address any local issues and ensure stability along the frontier.
Gradual Normalisation of Relations
The renewed military dialogue reflects a gradual normalisation of India-China relations after more than four years of strain following the May 2020 border standoff. The prolonged confrontation finally eased last year when disengagement was completed at the last remaining friction points โ Demchok and Depsang.
However, both sides still maintain an estimated 50,000โ60,000 troops each along the LAC, and a complete de-escalation is yet to take place.
A Forward-Looking Framework
Following Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yiโs visit to New Delhi in August, both nations agreed on a โstable, cooperative, and forward-lookingโ framework for future engagement. This roadmap includes maintaining border peace, reopening trade routes, and expanding bilateral investments.
The latest Corps Commander-level meeting also marked the first session under the newly revived โGeneral Level Mechanismโ in the Western Sector since the 24th round of Special Representativesโ discussions held in August.
Beijingโs Perspective
Chinaโs statement after the talks highlighted โactive and in-depth communicationโ between both militaries on managing the western section of the ChinaโIndia border. It reaffirmed the shared understanding reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping to maintain dialogue through both military and diplomatic channels, ensuring peace and preventing escalation.
A Return to Structured Diplomacy
The decision to revive multiple bilateral dialogue mechanisms, including military-level engagements, originated from the ModiโXi meeting in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.
The resumption of these talks signals a cautious yet steady return to structured diplomacy between the two Asian powers โ aimed at building trust, avoiding confrontation, and establishing long-term stability along the contested frontier in eastern Ladakh.
