The Prime Minister’s Office of Japan announced the development in a public alert, confirming that a missile launch had been detected from North Korea and that monitoring operations were underway.

Crisis Team Activated by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi

Following the launch, the administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi activated an emergency crisis management team at the Prime Minister’s Office to track the missile’s trajectory and assess potential threats.

Japan’s Coast Guard reported the launch at around 1:30 PM, citing information from the country’s defence ministry. Authorities also issued advisories to ships operating in nearby waters to remain alert and follow updates.

Missile Landed Outside Japan’s EEZ

According to Japanese officials and reports from NHK and Kyodo News, early assessments indicate that the missile fell into waters outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). No damage or casualties have been reported so far.

South Korea’s military also confirmed the launch, stating that North Korea fired at least one projectile eastward toward the Sea of Japan.

Launch Amid US–South Korea Military Drills

The missile test occurred during ongoing joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang has historically criticised and often responded to with weapons demonstrations.

Earlier this year, North Korea launched two ballistic missiles on January 27, which also landed outside Japan’s EEZ.

Regional Security Concerns Rise

The latest missile launch has renewed security concerns across East Asia, with Japan closely monitoring developments and coordinating with regional allies.

Authorities in Tokyo continue to analyse the missile’s trajectory and technical details, while maintaining heightened surveillance in the region.
