In the proud history of the Indian Army, stories of courage are not only written on conventional battlefields but also in difficult operational areas where soldiers are required to protect innocent lives while facing grave personal danger. One such inspiring story is that of Captain Akshat Upadhyay of the 20th Battalion, The Jat Regiment, whose exceptional bravery, tactical skill and sense of duty saved nearly 200 villagers from a violent threat on the night of 27–28 May 2023.
For his extraordinary act of courage under heavy fire, Captain Akshat Upadhyay was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. His actions stand as a shining example of what it means to lead from the front, remain calm under pressure and place the safety of civilians above one’s own life.
Captain Akshat Upadhyay, service number IC-86211K, belongs to a family rooted in values of discipline, service and sacrifice. His father, Shri Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, and mother, Smt Sushma Upadhyay, raised him with the principles that would later define his conduct as an officer of the Indian Army. Commissioned into the 20th Battalion of The Jat Regiment, also known as 20 JAT, Captain Upadhyay became part of one of the Army’s most respected infantry regiments.
The Jat Regiment has a long and glorious legacy of valour, sacrifice and professional excellence. Its battalions have served with distinction in various wars, conflicts and counter-insurgency operations. Officers and soldiers of the regiment are known for their grit, determination and fighting spirit. Captain Upadhyay carried forward this proud tradition when he was faced with a dangerous situation that demanded instant action and fearless leadership.
The incident took place on the intervening night of 27–28 May 2023. Captain Upadhyay and his party had established a temporary operating base near a village in a sensitive operational area. At around 0300 hours, he noticed a house catching fire in the village. At the same time, he observed a large mob advancing towards the burning house, creating an extremely volatile and dangerous situation.
Realising the seriousness of the threat, Captain Upadhyay immediately deployed his party in a tactically advantageous position. To gain better visibility of the area and assess the movement of the mob, he ordered the firing of an illumination round. As the area lit up, his party came under heavy and effective automatic fire from the direction of the burning house.
The situation was extremely challenging. Armed insurgents were operating from within or near the mob, using the chaos to create panic and cause further destruction. In such a moment, any hesitation could have resulted in loss of civilian lives and destruction of the entire village. However, Captain Upadhyay displayed remarkable composure and tactical understanding.
Instead of withdrawing or waiting passively under fire, he led his team towards the rear of the mob. This move helped him gain a better tactical position and confront the threat more effectively. Despite being under enemy fire, he issued a clear verbal warning to the mob, asking them not to burn the houses and to disperse. This demonstrated not only courage but also restraint and concern for civilian safety.
The warning, however, was met with more firing. Captain Upadhyay then led his party in a swift and resolute response. In the ensuing engagement, four insurgents were eliminated and five others were apprehended. A significant quantity of war-like stores was also recovered from the area. His decisive action broke the momentum of the mob and prevented further damage to the village.
Most importantly, Captain Upadhyay’s actions saved the lives of approximately 200 innocent villagers. What could have turned into a major tragedy was prevented because of his timely intervention, fearless leadership and precise use of force. His conduct ensured that the threat was neutralised while avoiding large-scale collateral damage.
The official citation for his gallantry noted his exceptional courage, unparalleled bravery under heavy fire, disregard for personal safety, high standards of tactical acumen and swift action in a challenging situation. These qualities made him deserving of the Shaurya Chakra, one of the country’s most prestigious gallantry awards.
The Shaurya Chakra is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry otherwise than in the face of the enemy. It is often conferred on soldiers and officers who display extraordinary courage during counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism and internal security operations. Captain Akshat Upadhyay’s name now stands among those brave soldiers who have gone beyond the call of duty in service of the nation.
His story is particularly important because it highlights the complex nature of modern military operations. Soldiers are often required to act in situations where civilians, hostile elements and mobs may be present in the same area. In such conditions, courage alone is not enough. An officer must also show judgement, restraint and tactical clarity. Captain Upadhyay demonstrated all these qualities in the most difficult circumstances.
For young defence aspirants, especially those preparing for the Services Selection Board, his example offers powerful lessons. It shows that leadership is not merely about command; it is about responsibility. A true leader must remain alert, take quick decisions, protect his men and safeguard innocent lives. Captain Upadhyay’s conduct also reflects the Officer Like Qualities that the armed forces value deeply — courage, initiative, effective intelligence, social responsibility, determination and ability to influence a group.
His action also reflects the larger ethos of the Indian Army. The Army does not merely fight enemies; it protects people, upholds order and stands as a shield for civilians in the most difficult situations. Captain Upadhyay’s decision to warn the mob before engaging, despite being under fire, shows the professionalism and discipline that define the Indian soldier.
In many ways, Captain Akshat Upadhyay represents the quiet heroism of countless Indian Army officers who serve in difficult and dangerous areas away from public attention. They operate in hostile conditions, often under constant threat, yet continue to perform their duty with honour and dedication. Their courage rarely seeks recognition, but their actions protect lives and strengthen the nation’s faith in its armed forces.
Captain Upadhyay did not act for awards or headlines. He acted because duty demanded it. When a village was under threat, when civilians were in danger and when enemy fire was directed at his party, he chose to lead from the front. His courage ensured that fear did not prevail that night.

The story of Captain Akshat Upadhyay is not just about one operation. It is about the character of an Indian Army officer. It is about the spirit of the Jat Regiment. It is about the values of courage, restraint and selfless service that form the foundation of the Indian Armed Forces.
On a dark night in May 2023, Captain Akshat Upadhyay stood between danger and nearly 200 villagers. With courage in his heart and duty as his guide, he saved innocent lives and neutralised a serious threat under heavy fire. His actions will continue to inspire soldiers, officers and defence aspirants for years to come.
Captain Akshat Upadhyay’s name will remain etched in the records of gallantry as a reminder that true heroism lies not only in defeating the enemy but also in protecting the innocent. His story is a tribute to the courage of the Indian Army and to the timeless ideal of service before self.
