Estonian Defence Forces Begin Acquisition of Modern Logistics Trucks
Tallinn, Estonia—In a significant step towards enhancing its military transport capabilities, the Estonian Defence Forces have received the first batch of G410 6×4 logistics trucks from Swedish automotive company Scania. This initial delivery is part of a €50 million ($54.1 million) project aimed at modernizing the military’s fleet, which includes approximately 265 vehicles.
The new G410 trucks are designed to replace the aging DAF 2300 series semi-trucks, which have been in use since the late 1970s. The G410 fleet features advanced driver assistance systems and logistics solutions that mirror those used in civilian transportation, making operations and maintenance more efficient.
Estonia’s Defence Investment Center (RKIK) highlighted that the G410 trucks are equipped with a specialized hydraulic system developed by the local company GoCraft to improve maneuverability. Powered by a 1.3-liter Euro 6 engine, these vehicles can reach speeds of up to 56 miles (90 kilometers) per hour.
Maj. Raigo Puusepp, Chief Technician Officer of the Estonian Defence Forces, emphasized the sustainability benefits of this initiative, particularly in regards to spare parts availability. However, he also noted that modern technology demands new approaches to repairs, which presents challenges for military repair personnel.
"The impact of logistical capabilities in serving the combat units of the Defense Forces is significant," Puusepp stated. "This necessitates the deployment of more capable equipment."
Looking ahead, Estonia plans to expand its military vehicle fleet with additional transport and tactical vehicles under a broader €693 million ($750.3 million) investment in partnership with Latvia. The upcoming deliveries, expected later this year and in 2025, will aid in operations on both highways and undeveloped roads.
The new vehicles will be utilized not just by the Estonian and Latvian armed forces but also by the Estonian Defense League and Police and Border Guard. Erko Sepri, RKIK’s Vehicles, Technology, and Logistics Manager, expressed optimism during the handover of the G410s, stating, "After a long procurement and production process, the first vehicles are here, marking the beginning of a new era for our defense forces."
The introduction of these modern vehicles represents a substantial investment in the future of Estonia’s military readiness, paving the way for enhanced operational capabilities and sustainability.
