The Indian Army has signed a landmark contract worth ₹130.58 crore with JBM Auto Ltd for the procurement of 113 electric buses and 43 fast chargers. The agreement, signed on 17 October 2025, marks the Army’s first large-scale induction of electric vehicles, underscoring its commitment to green mobility and sustainable transport solutions.
The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s PM E-Drive Programme, which promotes clean, efficient, and eco-friendly transport systems. By adopting electric buses, the Army aims to modernise its transport fleet, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and contribute to India’s broader mission of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
The procurement has been classified under the “Buy (Indian–IDDM)” category Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured — reinforcing the Army’s dedication to the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and supporting local defence manufacturing.
These electric buses will be deployed across formations of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, setting a benchmark for green transformation in the defence sector. The initiative reflects the Indian Army’s forward-looking approach towards integrating sustainability with operational efficiency, paving the way for a cleaner, self-reliant, and environmentally conscious future.
