In a major step towards strengthening India’s defence infrastructure in Central India, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to establish a new airbase spanning nearly 1,000 acres in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, making it the largest airbase in Central India once completed.
Planned near the existing Khajuraho Airport, the airbase will serve as a strategic hub for fighter and transport aircraft operations, enhancing India’s ability to conduct rapid deployment and logistical support across multiple theatres. The Ministry of Defence has already initiated preliminary groundwork, with land acquisition expected to begin early next year following necessary approvals.
The project gained momentum after a detailed survey of potential locations including Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Gwalior, with Khajuraho emerging as the most suitable site due to its strategic location, sparse population, and scope for future expansion, according to Member of Parliament Vishnu Dutt Sharma, who confirmed that groundwork is underway.
Situated in a plateau region with favourable weather and minimal civilian interference, Khajuraho offers optimal conditions for round-the-year flying operations. The site’s proximity to national highways and existing air connectivity will further facilitate rapid logistical movements and efficient command operations.
The upcoming base is expected to complement the IAF’s Gwalior Air Force Station, enhancing coverage and operational balance across India’s central corridor. Officials have stated that the facility will play a critical role in future combat missions, joint operations, and quick-response deployments, especially in light of lessons drawn from recent operations such as Operation Sindoor.
Beyond its strategic significance, the project is also anticipated to drive regional economic growth, improving infrastructure and generating employment in the Bundelkhand region. The development will integrate both defence and developmental priorities, reinforcing Khajuraho’s position as not just a heritage and tourism hub, but also a key pillar of India’s national security architecture.
