Unfortunately, some cadets pursue a myriad of other college interests while assuming that the commissioning ceremony will magically bestow upon them the leadership talent required for success. In reality, leadership is so much more than wearing gold bars and issuing orders. And that growth does not happen passively, as no one drifts into leadership excellence. If you want to be a capable leader on your first day as an officer, leadership must be deliberate part of your cadet experience – a daily personal pursuit and not simply an academic class to be passed and forgotten.

Find ten minutes a day to do something, anything that relates to leadership or improves your future ability to exert positive influence on those you will lead. Books and articles are great, jotting notes and penning your own thoughts are better.

HAL LCH – The Indigenous Attack Helicopter Of India

HAL LCH or the light combat helicopter is an indigenous attack helicopter that is set to replace the heavy attack helicopter used in the Indian armed forces.  Air superiority places a vital role in the case of war. While fighter jets are in the frontline for this purpose they lack the agility and manoeuvrability which the helicopters brings. Attack helicopters help the troops in the frontline to progress further into enemy territory and also destroy field guns, communication centre etc. The variety of missile it carries helps it to do different purposes. LCH is one of the best attack helicopters in the world lets take a peek into the LCH.

DESIGN

The attack helicopter is designed for anti-infantry and anti-armour operations. The helicopter is made of a light composite material which makes it light in weight and thus increases it manoeuvrability. The skin of the copter is a digital camouflage which makes it visibility hard. The pin type header of the helicopter reduces it radar cross section.

The Helicopter has 2 shakti turbo-shaft engines and 2 crew cockpit. The fuselage is narrow and sleek making it unique as it cuts down the radar cross-section. The fuel tanks are crashworthy and self-sealing thus, increase the safety of the crew and machine.

AVIONICS

The LCH has a bulletproof cockpit glass which also acts as a display panel. The helicopter also has forward looking infrared camera fo the purpose of target acquisition. There is also a laser rangefinder and designator for the purpose of finding the range and designating a target for attack purpose. The pilot/ WSO has helmet mounted sight for an attack.

In Defence of the helicopter, it has electronic warfare suit with radar warning, laser warning and missile approach warning systems. The LCH is also network-centric which facilitates it to transmit data to airborne and ground platforms.

ARMAMENT

The LCH is one the most heavily armed combat helicopters in the world. It is on par with the apache of the US. It has 4 hardpoints and a machine gun for its attack purposes. The hardpoints are mounted with an array of rockets and bombs.

MISSION TESTING

The LCH was made to counter the gap that the Indian armed forces felt during the Kargil 1999. The LCH is made for operations in high altitude as well as operations in hot deserts of Rajasthan. The all-weather performance of the helicopter makes its very unique compared to other attack helicopters of  the world. The LCH operational height is 6500m which is helpful in the ice terrains of the Himalayas

The LCH successfully completed hot weather test in jodhpur in the month of June last year, while the cold weather trails took place in Leh.

Recently, the weapons trails of the LCH was started and is progressing without any glitch. The helicopter was tested for its firepower of the 70mm rockets and the forward mounted cannon. The other weapon systems are expected to be put to a test. The army aviation corps is expected to take 114 of the LCH while the IAF is looking to buy 65 of them. Once the testing is completed the production shall start and India will be possessing of the best attack helicopter in the world.

1. MARATHONS

The best and easily available exercise of all is running and running long distance is marathon running. Marathon dates back 490 BC when Pheidippides ran back to Athens to give the victory of the war. Over the years, this became an event of competition and now a marathon is 42.2 Km while a half marathon is 21.1 Km in distance. In the defence academies of India, there is a very important event, the cross-country running which is a 12 Km competitive run.

Running long distance is purely mental, yes physical fitness does play a part but the will to go the distance matters more. It helps you to build endurance, never give up attitude and controlled aggression to finish within the stipulated time. Running a marathon also a planned process thus enhances it your trait to plan ie ” plan your work and work your plan “. All the academies be it IMA,INA , NDA, OTA or AFA a cross-country is a major event. The para SF runs 60km with a backpack and in the running world its called ultra marathon!

2. SWIMMING

Water is an essential element to live and swimming is essential to live in water. Though the sport is considered for recreation, it requires a lot of mental strength and agility in the body to be a fish in the water. It works almost all parts of your body and is the best sport to lose fat and strengthen muscles at the same time. Since it is a key survival skill all the academies push the cadets to know swimming before they pass out of the academy.

In the INA, there is a practice of open sea swimming in which you are dropped into the sea and are asked to swim back to the coast! this is a competition and certainly requires and builds one important skill in mind “survival” . The fight is between self and not the water, it certainly help you to stay calm in life as packing will not help even a bit in swimming.

3. TREKKING

Trekking is not actually a sport but is definitely one builds character and puts fitness to test. It is an activity in which you go up against nature which will definitely put you through a lot of challenges and test your skill set. When you decide to trek a mountain 1000m in height you are comparatively smaller in size but you can conquer her with your will to get on top. It tests you mental strength, the route is tough at times no route, your will to stop at nothing and ability to decide on a safe route is also tested. They involve all the most commonly known pull ups, push ups, crunches, and sprint, shuttle running . In the academies, almost all cadets sport a six pack and are in top shape, one of the main reason being calisthenics and cross fitness. The muscle you build by your own body weight stays with you forever unlike supplement enriched body building.

The exercises actually push you to the limit in a very quick time and there is literally no helping in this, unlike gyms. If you want to push the limit only you can do, Cross fitness involves a series of calisthenics and HIIT are the frontline fitness activities in the academy. They build you mentally, you will not only be surprised as to how difficult it is to lift  yourself but also you will be surprised as to how quickly are able to push yourself beyond limits.

5. IRONMAN

If there is an ultimate test to endurance then it is IRONMAN or triathlon. There 3 parts in it, running, swimming, cycling. All the three are done continuously one after the other. The sport is called IRONMAN for a reason as it put one to maximum physical strain and the mentality of the person it put to a test. This can be one sport compared to the gruelling activities of the special forces of the world. A lot of dedication, practices and planning are needed for the sport. The energy level and mentality are taken to the pinnacle point. The sport is not for everyone but is definitely a one to test your mettle.

All these sports are character building one and they have a common thing, that is they build your endurance. They push you to various levels and make you strong both mentally and physically. When you excel in any of them or begin to try them the show a new dimension of yourself in a very positive way that helps you build your grit. 8 Things to Know About Pokhran II Nuclear Test

After independence, India got fame from its two nuclear tests, 1st after two decades of independence and another in 1998, which made India to adjust its place in the list of self-reliant and nuclear capable nations. The tests was carried out in secrecy and was revealed after its success. Pokhran which means “Place of 5 Mirages” is the place where both the nuclear tests were carried out. These tests raised a worldwide uproar and registered India’s name in the list of nuclear nations. Talking about the Pokhran II test, India celebrates its anniversary on 11th May. Below are some points that every defence aspirant must know about Pokhran II Nuclear test.

  1. It was the second nuclear test after smiling Budha, which was conducted in 1974. First one was conducted on 18 May, 1974 in the sands of Pokhran, Rajasthan.
  2. It consisted of 5 detonations. First one was fusion and remaining 4 were fission bomb test. The test took 3 days, starting from 11 May.
  3. The test led to the imposition of sanction on India by many developed nations.
  4. P.J. Abdul Kalam was entirely involved in this test. “The Turning Points” of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has a significant part, describing the test and the pre and post scenario of Pokhran II. He is the chief of DRDO and one of the Project Chief Coordinators of this nuclear test.
  5. This test made India 6th nation to have tested a nuclear weapon.
  6. AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) and DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) were the authorities behind the test.
  7. The site was built by the Engineer’s Corps of Indian Army. The bombs were taken to the site of tests by Army trucks.
  8. The day of the test i.e. 11 May was remarked as the National Technology Day of India and now it is celebrated by awarding anomalies of science and industries.

Conclusion – Pokhran II test was concluded in 1998 and is always remembered as a day of pride for India. Many known personalities, political anomalies and Indian Military hunks coordinated with each other to carry out this test and made it successful. The test showed the self-dependency of India and still 11 May occupies a special place in calendars of scientists and researchers.

Repeaters should do some brainstorming efforts to rectify the cause of their previous failed attempts.

Manage all your tasks, giving sufficient time to them. Share time for family, friends, colleagues and for personal tasks in a sufficient proportion.

Analysing this, on an average, there is a mere 0.02 % chance of you to go to interview after you have applied for its exam. And considering every 1 in 2000 making it to the academy, there is a 0.0005% chance that you will make it to the academy after the final merit list. No wonder why NDA is the 8th toughest academy to get into. It has the lowest admission rate of all the military training academies from around the world.

But these odds are narrowed down in reality considering the people not showing up for the examination and not showing up for the interviews. So, calm down, you, in reality, have greater chances of getting recommended that this. But that too comes with a condition – prepare for it. 10 Things to Know About BrahMos II Hypersonic Missile

BrahMos II Hypersonic Missile

Russia earlier in this March, successfully carried out the first test firing of the hypersonic version of BrahMos missile, The BrahMos II, in Russia. The test was successful and the missile flew at the speed of Mach 6. However, the range and the mode of flight were not mentioned by the authorities.

The test came after the successful test firing of BrahMos missile by India in December last year.

Here’s what you need to know about this development:

  1. The test of BrahMos II was carried out from a land-based testing range.
  2. The speed of BrahMos II is Mach 7 with a range of 290 kilometres.
  3. It can carry warheads up to 300 kg, conventional, shrapnel, or armour piercing and it will be launched from a ship, as the first phase.
  4. The missile will replace the existing P 800 and Kalibr missile from the Russian naval ships. P 800 is known as the base model of BrahMos.
  5. The development trails are believed to be completed by 2018 and the Russian navy will start to induct it by 2019 making Russian Navy the first Navy to get hypersonic missiles for anti-ship missions.
  6. Apart from this, BrahMos Corp is also involved in three bigger projects, namely air-launched version known as BrahMos-A, BrahMos II (the hypersonic variant of BrahMos), and BrahMos NG which is a mini version of the BrahMos.
  7. Both Indian and Russian counterparts work close to achieving the above-said projects, In India they working on the BrahMos-A missile whose carriage trails are scheduled to be the following April, and in Russia they were working on the hypersonic variant with a Ram jet engine to boost the missile speed up to Mach 7.
  8. Indian Armed forces are the only user who uses the BrahMos variants in Army, Navy, and Airforce while Russia is yet to employ their naval ships with BrahMos missile.
  9. BrahMos used in the Navy ships usually to conduct the anti-ship and anti-surface mission with the range of 300 kilometres, and in the lo-lo mode, the missile can strike targets up to 120 kilometres. During lo-lo mode, it’s impossible to intercept the supersonic missile flying at Mach 3 speed.
  10. Indian army also uses the BrahMos in three variants block I, II, and III, those block versions are more advanced variants than its predecessors. The air force also operates land-based launchers, air force operates one or two squadrons of BrahMos missiles.

ICBM are heavily powered to wreck havoc in the place they drop. With the rapid change in warfare, ICBM plays a vital role in destroying the enemy before they know what hit them. There was a rapid growth of missile development during the cold war times, USA and Russia remain the front line of the ICBM in the world. However many countries in the recent past have come into the competition including India. Here is few missile which can travel the distance and pack the needed punch:

1.R-36

The Russian-made ballistic missile stands tall when it comes to the ICBM. The missile has a very long range and is test proved to adhere to the theoretical data. The technology used is for space launch vehicles thus making it more potent.The missile uses decoy warhead technology making it hard for defence technologies to track the warhead. This unique feature makes the anti-ballistic defence look weak.

2. DF-5

Dongfeng – 5, is yet another reason for the world to fear the Chinese. The highly capable ICBM DF-5 can travel almost around the world strike from on end to another. The missile has a 3-stage separation method.  The missile has one drawback that the design is such that fueling is more time consuming than other ICBMs, but once this fuelling is done, it can send a shiver down the enemy’s spine!

3. LGM-30 MINUTEMAN

This ICBM is from the world’s most technologically advanced country and is highly reliable as it is tested time and again. It is the only land-based ICBM in the US. As the name suggests the missile has a very short prep time and can be quickly launched. It uses 3 smaller warheads instead of one to defeat the anti-ballistic defence systems.

4. RS-24 YARS

Yet another ICBM of the Russians, tested in 2007 is said to replace the older long range missiles in the Russian arsenal. The thermonuclear weapon is  capable of carrying 10 independently targetable warheads.

5. AGNI – V

The indigenously made AGNI V is the latest output of the Indian missile development programme. The Missile was tested in 2012, there are many speculations about the range of the missile, but is said it be around 8000km taking India into the league of elite ICBM nations. The missile is solid- fuelled and is expected to have multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle  with each missile capable of carrying 2-10 nuclear warheads.

ICBM missile totally relies on the earth’s gravity, the trajectory of the missile is very important for them to be accurate. Over the years, ICBMs have been launched from various platforms ie land, road/ mobile, submarine based. The use of these can be devastating and can cripple the enemy such that there is no chance to recover. All the missiles made are almost nuclear capable and thus are even more potent. The development of the ICBM is constant around the world India on the verge of testing Agni VI, which has a longer range and is more potent as it can carry more payload. Even though cruise missile is quicker the ballistic missile is equally potent when we add up the speed and the firepower it carries making it a very important element in the case of a war.
