CBI arrests former Air Chief SP Tyagi, 2 others in AgustaWestland

The CBI on 9th December had arrested former IAF chief Air Chief Marshal S.P.Tyagi and two others for alleged corruption in the ₹3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP choppers deal.

Earlier too, Tyagi was questioned by the CBI extensively in the past in this case. The Enforcement Directorate had, in April this year, summoned Tyagi in connection with its money-laundering probe in the ₹3,600 crore.

Along with Tyagi, his cousin Sanjiv alias Julie Tyagi and lawyer Gautam Khaitan were also arrested.

All the 3 have been arrested on the allegations of accepting illegal gratification for exercising influence through corrupt and or illegal means.

This is for the first time a former IAF chief has been arrested by the central probe agency. CBI had also got issued letters rogatory (judicial requests) to multiple countries to gather more leads and evidence in this case.

On 1 January 2014, India had scrapped the contract with Finmeccanica’s British subsidiary AgustaWestland for supplying 12 AW-101 VVIP choppers to the IAF over an alleged breach of contractual obligations and charges of paying kickbacks of ₹423 crore by it for securing the deal.

The allegation against the former Air chief is that he allegedly reduced the height of the VVIP helicopters so that AgustaWestland could be included in the bids.

ED is probing the case in which 70 million euros (about ₹360 crore) were allegedly paid as kickbacks.

DRDO to Manufacture LCA MK-II for Indian Navy

LCA Tejas for Indian Navy

After Indian Navy Chief announced that the LCA is not fit for the Indian navy, now some news of installation of an advanced and more powerful engine in Mk-2 of LCA are being surfaced that will make it fit and compatible with the requirements of the Indian navy. The director of Aeronautical Development Agency recently said that the agency is emphasizing on the needs and requirements of the Indian Navy and a new project of LCA Navy MK-II is being proposed to overcome the shortcomings of LCA Mark-I that was not accepted by the Indian navy due to certain performance reasons.

Tejas - India's Light Combat Aircraft
Tejas – India’s Light Combat Aircraft

Why Navy Rejected LCA?

Light Combat Aircraft was rejected by the Indian Navy as it is about 500-600 kg heavy then its Air Force version due to the addition of some more specifications in the aircraft. But when the final aircraft testing was done, it was heavier than the above count.

More About LCA

Recently order of 83 LCA for induction in the air force has been released and the indigenous engine Kaveri is reported to be installed as fast as possible in the LCA for better performance and making it affordable for other nations negotiating with India for procuring LCA. Recently DRDO has sanctioned program on Gas Turbine Enabling Technology for the Kaveri engine at a cost of Rs. 78 Cr.

Indian Navy has also said that the indigenous 5th generation aircraft AMCA will be considered for Indian Navy if its naval version will be proposed by its manufacturers.  Some experts are pointing to hand over the manufacturing of the naval version of AMCA to the navy engineers as it is a tough job for PSUs to make a naval version of an aircraft from its air force version.

Air Force Inducting Tejas

Recently Indian government has cleared the proposal of 83 Tejas aircrafts for the Indian air force. The move will reduce the dependence of Indian air force over the foreign sources. The project cost is estimated to be Rs. 48,000 Cr and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will manufacture the aircrafts. Indian air force has inducted 20 Tejas aircrafts into service and as per the sources, Indian air force is seemed to be interested in Mk -2 version of the LCA, which will have more specifications and features than the previous version.

Conclusion

LCA Tejas project was raised in order to replace the ageing Soviet age aircrafts in the Armed Forces. But after navy rejected LCA, it raised the compatibility issues of the Indian navy and further enhanced version of aircrafts that will get adjusted in the requirement of the Indian navy. Meanwhile, the clearance of 83 Tejas for Indian air force is also a positive move in the same direction.

The frequent modernisation will make the defense more strong in upcoming years. Tejas will be a great achievement in the future and it will play a key role in maintaining the power and performance in the same and required ratio.

Indian Navy in Action
Indian Navy in Action

The Indian Navy has expanded a lot in the past few decades, but Indian Navy has made some exceptional performance some operations, which are as follows:-

  • Op Raahat

The operation was conducted by Indian Armed Forces in 2015 for the evacuation of people from war hit Yemen. INS Sumitra was deployed to evacuate people and INS Mumbai and INS Tarkash were sent to provide protection to the vessel. Not only Indian nationals, but foreigners were also evacuated from Yemen at the time of internal disturbance.

  • Op Parakram

It was a major standoff between India and Pakistan in 2002. The Indian Navy was also a part of it. In this operation 26 cadets under a Navy captain were from Indian Navy’s side and it was the first time in Indian Defense history when cadets were part of any operation.

  • Op Trident

It is the offensive operation of Indian Navy over Pakistan, when the Indian Navy attacked over the Karachi port of Pakistan in the 1971 Indo- Pak war. Indian Navy celebrated Navy day on 4 December to mark the victory of this operation where Indian Navy used anti-ship missiles for the first time and destroyed many ships of Pakistan without any loss on the Indian side.

  • Op Python

It was followed after operation Tirdent in which Karachi port was attacked during Indo- pak war 1971. In this operation Indian Navy attacked the Pakistani ships at Karachi port managing to strike one ship of Pakistan without any loss to any of the Indian ship.

  • Op Talwar

Operation Talwar was planned during Kargil war in 1999. Indian Navy prepared a blockade for the Pakistani boats near the Karachi port to stop the supply of oil and fuel. Indian Navy also threatened to cut the trade routes of the Pakistan and started patrolling in the Arabian Sea. Later Pakistan requested India about their shortage of fuel and respective steps were taken.

  • Op Cactus

The operation was conducted to pacify the situation in Maldives and Srilanka in 1988. It was conducted by the Armed Forces of India, where Indian Navy was also involved actively. INS Godavari and INS Betwa were involved in the operation at the Srilankan coast.

Conclusion – Indian Navy is modernizing itself by inducting new and advanced war machines with high fighting ability. But decades ago, when Indian Navy was not too efficient, the Navy had showed its power and made India proud. In all the above operations, Indian Navy had suffered negligible loss, but stoke hard to the enemies in all possible and effective ways. All Navy aspirants should know these achievements of Indian Navy and must give their best in raising the valour of Navy in the future.

Now, Indian Air Force To Train Vietnamese Sukhoi-30 Pilots

India signed an agreement with Vietnam on December 5 to train Vietnamese Sukhoi-30 Pilots. Vietnam uses Russian-made Sukhoi-30 MK2 ‘Flanker-F’ multirole combat aircraft while India operates Sukhoi-30 MKi.

This is the second major training programme after Vietnamese Navy was trained by Indian Navy in operating Russian-origin kilo-class submarines.

The agreement was signed at a meeting between Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his Vietnamese counterpart General Ngo Xuan Lich on Monday in New Delhi.

India-Vietnam Defence Ministers
India-Vietnam Defence Ministers

This came against the backdrop of the growing assertiveness of China in the region. India and Vietnam have been steadily stepping up their cooperation, especially in the defence sector.

India and Vietnam are both worried about China’s growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region and are steadily building cooperation in military training, exercises and defence technology, as well as in joint oil exploration in the contentious South China Sea.

It can be recalled that India has already had two defence exercises with China earlier this year: exercise hand-in-hand and Sino-China Cooperation.

The Indian Air Force and the Vietnamese People’s Army Air Force are expected to imminently work out the details on the number of pilots to be trained, the scope of their instruction, and the overall cost.

Earlier this year, India has even offered to export the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Varunastra anti-submarine torpedoes, and other military hardware and software to Vietnam.

The pact on the training of Vietnamese fighter pilots has been in the works since 2013, but could not be finalised earlier due to some logistical and financial hitches.

Now, Vietnamese pilots will begin arriving in India from next year onwards to get both basic and advanced training on the Sukhois of the IAF.

9 Things to Know About Longewala Battle

Know About Longewala Battle

Longewala battle 1971 that was famous for the exceptional victory of Indian soldiers over Pakistani forces, where solders showed their bold bravery to deter the Pakistani force about 15 times larger than Indian Company. Indian army is celebrating 45 years of the battle and remembering the night of victory. “Border” movie was pictured on the incident and is still remembered as a motivational movie. The entire incident was about a battle of a night, when the Indian soldiers showed an exemplary performance of their courage and faced Pakistani soldiers without reinforcement and air support. Some facts about Laungewla battle are:-

Brigadier Kuldip Singh
Brigadier Kuldip Singh MVC, VSM
  1. Lack of Weapons- Indian soldiers had limited weapons as compared to the Pakistani army. Pakistani forces came with about 2000 soldiers, 1 mobile Infantry Brigade and 45 tanks. While just 120 Indian soldiers with a jeep mounted with M40 rifle, were standing in front of them. The air support provided to the Indian army was restricted for the night of the attack and the Indian soldiers were all alone at their post.
  2. Captain Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, the dynamic Leader – The leader of the battle, Captain Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, was the pivotal part of the entire incident. He was the one who drove the josh in the veins of the Indian soldiers and led them to do, what earlier seems to be impossible.
  3. Bulk of Problems, Yet Deterred All – After getting the information of the huge Pakistani military armed with tanks approaching the Longewala post, Captain Kuldip Singh contacted battalion headquarters and asked for immediate reinforcement. But headquarter informed him that the reinforcement will reach to them by the dawn.
  4. Unexpected Attack Averted – The Longewala post was pointed as a less important post by the top officials. That’s why, only one company was deployed at the post. But the company showed its best in averting the odds and securing the post from the mammoth Pakistani force that entire night.
  5. The Ultimate Show Of Courage And Bravery – The bravery and courage of Indian soldiers to keep their post safe and secure was unmatched. The decision to stay on the post was a hard step, even after being aware of the tank regiments approaching them. 120 Indian soldiers were nothing in front of the 2000 Pakistani soldiers. This was a lesson for the upcoming officers and will always be remembered.
  6. Actual Target Was Not Longewala – The actual target of the Pakistani soldiers was not the Longewala, but they were aiming Jaisalmer. After observing one company at the Longewala post, they changed the route and headed to the Longewala post.
  7. Tactics Used In The Battle – Pakistani Army reached the post and found a fencing, which they perceived it to be made for mines. Pakistani army wasted its 4 hours scanning for the Mines, Indian forces did not fire a single bullet in the four hours, as the darkness made it hard for Pakistani forces to track Indian troops.
  8. Indian Air Force Was At Its Peak – The next morning, when Indian hunters reached the battle spot, they bombarded the Pakistani tanks and that was the moment, when Pakistani forces ran to save their life.
  9. The Counter Attack By Indian – After Longewala post was secured by the Indian troops, Kumaon regiment approached the Pakistani ranger posts opposite to the Longewala post and captured 3 posts there and there was no loss of life in counter attack.

Conclusion – The Longewala battle is still remembered for the bold actions and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers. The soldiers showed their best in deterring the Pakistani soldiers. The battle is still remembered as an outstanding achievement of the Indian army. 45 years have passed and still the battle is remembered and the victory is celebrated to revive the josh in the people.
