AgustaWestland Deal Records of ₹3,600 Cr Missing From IAF

0
AgustaWestland Deal Records

Recently, a row was sparked between SP Tyagi and the Congress leaders on the AgustaWestland VVIP Chopper Scam.

Now, according to the Defence Ministry and IAF, records related to controversial VVIP chopper deal with AgustaWestland were not available with them. The IAF has claimed it does not have records related to controversial VVIP chopper deal with AgustaWestland which was later scrapped following allegations of bribery.

Under the RTI Act, an application was filed with the defence ministry seeking complete records related to the 2010 deal, including price negotiations, file notings, information on the Price Negotiation Committee meetings, initials estimates of the choppers, besides additions sought in the helicopters which increased the cost and deliberations which allowed lowering of flight ceiling.

The MoD transferred the application to the IAF on June 16 asking the latter to furnish the information. An application is transferred when the public authority does not have any or a part of information sought by the RTI applicant. Surprisingly, on May 6, the defence minister referred to several details of the deal during a Lok Sabha debate.AgustaWestland Deal Records

An application is transferred under Section 6(3) of the RTI Act when the public authority does not have any or a part of information sought by the RTI applicant. The Indian Air Force headquarters in a reply said, “The information sought vide your RTI application is not available at this HQ.”

Meanwhile, CBI, which is probing the case, had collected many records during investigation, but as per norms, copies of necessary documents were left with the concerned ministry or the department from where they had been collected.

ISI Spy Held in Jaisalmer With Maps of Border Areas

ISI Spy Held in Jaisalmer

An alleged Pakistani spy was arrested by the Rajasthan police from the bordering city of Jaisalmer on Thursday along with RAW and IB and items containing information on India’s defence institutions were seized from him.

He was identified as Nandlal Maharaj, aged 26 and was arrested from a hideout in a hotel of Jaisalmer helping to smuggle weapons and explosives into India.

Sources have revealed that Nandlal and his network sneaked in about 35 kilograms of RDX from India-Pakistan border along Rajasthan. The explosives were dispatched reportedly to carry out blasts at various locations across the country.

Two mobile phones with micro SD cards, which contained classified information and photographs related to India’s defence institutions and vehicles; ₹2010 INR, ₹30 PKR and a diary containing information on money received from ISI, were recovered from him.

The diary reportedly has details of financial transactions between the spy and ISI. The diary reveals key details like time and amount of transactions. Depending upon the information he gave to ISI, he received varying amounts of money, all of which have been recorded in the diary.

As per the diary, Nandlal was reportedly paid about ₹70,000 for trading the explosives. The agencies have initiated a probe to find out where all these explosives have been dispatched by the suspected spy.

Nandlal, who is a Hindu, hails from Khipro, Sanghar in Sindh of Pakistan. According to sources, Nandlal operates a textile showroom in Pakistan and earns a sum of ₹3,000 each month.

He had come to India on the Thar Express on August 5 on a valid visa. His visit to Jaisalmer was illegal as the visa issued was for Jodhpur.

He was then seen in one of the 350 villages along the Jaisalmer border that are out of bounds for foreigners; Indians also need special permission to enter the zone. Villagers told investigators that Maharaj was offering money in exchange for information on high-security areas and arrangements.

Nandlal was nabbed after a 48-hour-long search operation carried out by the three intelligence agencies. Police have said that about eight other operatives who worked closely with Nandlal have fled after they learnt about his arrest.

Pakistan has been recruiting Hindus residing in towns adjacent to the border to camouflage them as Indians. The spies reportedly communicated using satellite phones with their agents in Pakistan.

Nandlal was arrested under sections 3 and 3 (9) of Official Secret Act 1923. He was produced in court on Friday and brought to Jaipur for further interrogation.

Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said the arrested accuse is an ISI agent and was being tracked for a long time.

7 Key Points About ISRO’s ‘Scramjet’ Test Launch

0
scramjet isro

The Indian Space Research Organisation recently test fired its “scramjet” engine joining the group of a handful of countries in possession with such a technology after the US, China and Russia. This is a baby step but a major milestone in history and it aligns with the Prime Minister’s Make in India initiative, as Isro goes for more indigenisation.

Here are 7 points to know about this feat of ISRO:

  1. A scramjet engine is an improvement over the ramjet engine as it operates at hypersonic speeds and allows supersonic combustion, which gives it its name — supersonic combustion ramjet or scramjet. The exhaust gases are then accelerated to hypersonic speeds.
  2. Scramjet engines would make rocket launches cheaper by reducing the amount of oxidiser to be carried along with the fuel on rockets.
  3. The technology will significantly reduce the weight of a rocket as scramjet technology does not require a rocket to carry oxygen. As a result, the payload capacity of the rocket can be increased.
  4. ISRO’s Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV), which is an advanced sounding rocket, was the solid rocket booster used for the test of Scramjet engines at supersonic conditions. ATV carrying Scramjet engines weighed 3277 kg at lift-off.
  5. The technology also has the potential to be adapted to commercial planes and it can substantially reduce the travelling time as well. Theoretically this technology can be used to reach the US in two to three hours using a space plane.
  6. ISRO’s Sunday test of the engine was for 6 seconds. In flight, however, the engine has to work for 1000 seconds.
  7. Cutting down on the need to accommodate liquid oxygen in the spacecraft will bring down the costs heavily by reducing the amount of oxidiser to be carried along with the fuel.

Eventually, the aim is to place this new rocket alongside the Re-usable Launch Vehicle (RLV) which India successfully tested a few months ago to make rocket launches more affordable. The ultimate goal is developing a single stage-to-orbit (SSTO) launch vehicle configuration, to finally make access to space a routine affair.

All You Need To Know About The Scorpene Data Leak

Scorpene Data Leakage

Top secret data of over 22,000 pages containing secret information on six highly advanced submarines being built for the Indian Navy was leaked. The Scorpene class submarines were being built in collaboration with French company DCNS. Here are all-questions-answered on the scorpene leak:

What does this secret data contain?

The secret data included details of the capabilities of SM39 anti-ship missile expected to be used on the Scorpene and classified information about the number of targets the missile was capable of processing.

Which are these submarines?

Security of the 6 French designed Scorpene Class submarines being built at the Mazgaon docks in Mumbai is expected to be hit. The first submarine of the class, named Kalvari (Tiger Shark) is presently being tested before acceptance by the Indian Navy. The other submarines are in various phases of construction.

How serious is this leak?

Short Answer – moderately serious if action taken immediately. The stealth capabilities of the sub stand compromised. The propulsion mechanism of the boat, which goes to the basic design of the submarine, is also out in the public domain due to the leak.

The only thing, which if leaked out from the supplier that can really compromise the operation of our submarines is the source code of the Fire Control System, which is safe as of now.

The other information leaked include frequencies at which they gather intelligence, their range, endurance, diving depths, the noise they radiate at different speeds as well as their magnetic and infra-red signatures.

Even if the frequencies of the sonar system are out in the public domain, our adversaries can easily take advantage. The DNA of any submarine is its opacity. Every boat has a specific signature. Experts have now said if details about that signature are leaked then vital security details will be out.

How seriously is this issue being taken?

Although India has said that a massive data leak from French shipbuilder DCNS of submarines designed for India’s navy did not “pose any security compromise”, India’s Navy Chief Sunil Lanba has termed the Scorpene data leak as ‘a matter of serious concern’.

The leak of these classified documents has been an enormous blow for the Indian Navy which says it is working to ensure that the leak of the data doesn’t actually affect the operations of the submarine fleet itself.

The World-Wide Impact

An Aussie publication ‘The Australian” has been temporarily banned by a court in New South Wales from releasing any more confidential data on the Indian Scorpene Class submarines.

The DCNS has also sought a court order to the newspaper to hand over the documents in its possession and removal of the contents from its website.

DCNS also filed a petition to prevent ‘The Australian” from making any more information public.

The leaks scandal has grown into a firestorm in India and France where it has been front-page news, as both governments seek to grapple with the damage it has done to India’s national security and to DCNS’s global reputation.

About Project-75:

Under Project-75, French company DCNS provides design and technology to public sector Mazagon Docks to make six Scorpene submarines, the first of which, INS Kalvari was put out for sea trials earlier this year. The hulls of the other five submarines have been cast, and they are scheduled to be commissioned by 2020.

The Aftermath:

Only six navies have successfully built ballistic missile submarines, including India. There is no need to be overly concerned as we have the capability of tweaking the design, and the weapon and sensor deployment capability to mitigate any risk from information being compromised.

Scorpene Data Leakage [FULL DETAILS]

Scorpene Data Leakage

The military has always been the backbone of the nation and the ultimate way to overcome a nation is to strike up its military. In such cases, technology is being used these days, to sneak out the crucial data and bolster their own arms above that of their accomplice. In a similar case, the Scorpene deal between India and France came under focus, when some crucial data about the submarine was reported to be stolen from France.

Scorpene Case

Scorpene deal was signed between India and France for $ 3.5 billion in 2005, for building 6 scropene submarines by French company at Mumbai. Scorpene deal once again came into controversy after some allegations of secret data leakage were raised and proved to be true. Earlier, delays in the deal and some kickbacks related allegations were there for the same deal. The contract was primarily between Mazagon Dock Ltd, Mumbai and Armaris, a French firm. Recently, the stealing and leaking of some crucial data about the submarines that can compromise its technical capabilities have been surfaced and the issue has taken the limelight, as it is vital military void and can pose a threat to the naval department.

What was the Entire Matter?

In 2005, a deal between India and France was signed for 6 Scorpene class submarines. As per the sources, a naval officer of France leaked some confidential data related to the technical specification of the submarine ranging about 22,000 pages. The data went to Australia through the mediums in South East Asia. The actual cause of concern is that the data leaked compromises with the stealth capability of the submarines. The data will be helpful in detecting the submarine averting its stealth feature. DNSC, the French company has hired that naval officer for converting some data for the deal.

Scorpene Class Submarines

The submarine is a diesel electric submarine constructed by French and Spanish companies. It can attain a speed of 20 knots with a range of 12,000 kms. The Air Independent Propulsion is the elite specification and enhances its stealth feature making it more capable to hunt in concealment. Some other nations like Poland, Spain and Brazil have ordered the submarine because of its specifications and stealth capabilities.

Further future threats

As per the sources, French company, DNSC has won the deal to design the submarines of Australia worth $ 50 billion. Further disclosure of data can be a cause of military contradiction between both the nations. However, the Australian PM has said that the model being made in Australia is different from the Indian model and the data leaked was outdated a few years ago.

Earlier such attempts

  • Government and commercial organisations of India were targeted by Chinese hackers in June, this year
  • In march, 2015, the Comptroller of Defence Accounts was targeted by similar mediums
  • In 2012, Chinese hackers operated some crucial data of Indian Navy’s Eastern Command
  • Navy war room leak case in 2005 hawked the nation after it was revealed that some critically crucial data was stolen from the war room of the Indian navy.

Conclusion – Scorpene will be the ace of Indian navy and can be the silent hunter in war times. But the revelations of the data can pose a threat to its detection and capabilities. Technical data are always kept secret to avoid the national contradiction and maintaining the performance of the arms and weapons. Inter-governmental talks were ignited just after the eruption of the news. Hope for a consensus between the nations and a humble solution of the problem.

SSB Recommended OTA Chennai

My name is Abhijith, and this is my story in brief about why SSB is tough, how I prepared and how I cracked SSB in my first attempt with nothing but a simple civilian background. I stand #2 in the merit list released recently by UPSC.

I come from an engineering background and by profession I worked in analytics. To say, numbers are of great importance for me. So, here’s how I say SSB is a tough one to crack –

  • About 2.5 Lakh students appeared for CDS-II 2015 which was conducted on Nov 1st 2015.
  • 8315 have qualified the written exam. Of which 2666 were called for interviews (For SSC OTA-104).
  • 212 students have cleared the SSB (excluding medicals results).

So, if you see the pass % is 0.084 and there are only 175 seats for OTA as per notification. Now that’s why this exam is considered tough!

Anyhow, coming to How I prepared:

For CDS-II written exam: I prepared with Newspaper (I spent solid 2-4 hrs on this and was ready for any debates on the topics). By then I have already read few books, which I wouldn’t say are necessary but they help you gain a perspective towards India, its past and its place in the world. Here are the books:

  • India’s struggle for freedom – Bipin Chandra
  • School Atlas- One should know the world and its spatial position on the globe. This website I found was very helpful and fun that now I know all country capitals- lizardpoint.com
  • Wikipedia pages about India from ancient times (chronologically). This was particularly tough for me. So I made my own notes on this and even a blog. You can check that here: Abhijith’s blog

Saying all this, one needs to do some practice papers. That’s where I came across SSBCrack and I subscribed for a practice test for CDS on SSBCrackExams.com. I finished all the 68 practice papers and 23 tests. It was fun and of course gave a good edge over 2.5 Lakh other students. Hard work paid off and I cracked the written exam.

How I cracked SSB:This is an interesting tale as I was completely ignorant of anything related to army/air force/navy. I didn’t know the hierarchy of ranks or names of top-class rifles or what happens in drills except for the information I get from newspapers. I literally did not even know what happens in SSB until April 6th (My SSB was on May 7th). To be frank, I had only book knowledge and nothing else. I didn’t know that there’d be medical exams. That’s when I found an academy in Hyderabad – Commando Training Academy.

It’s a simple institution started just outside Hyderabad cantonment area in Tirumulghery. There was a retired colonel who was in-charge of educating and helping SSB-ignorant students like me. To be very frank, my girlfriend found this academy online and asked me to check it out. I did and I loved it! The colonel was a tall, sharp and no-nonsense gentleman. I joined right away.

OTA Chennai merit list 2016

I was the working with Uber India as a Policy Specialist at Hyderabad office. So, I worked 5 days a week and on weekends I went to Commando Training Academy from 10am-6pm. Basically, I worked without any holidays, five days at Uber office and 2 days at Training. The training was simple, 10am-6pm the colonel would sit in front me and explain how SSB happens and most importantly he explained the OLQs (Officer Like Qualities). He did give me some practice papers for WAT, SRT, TAT and some tasks for PGT, CT and IOC. But 90% of the time, my training was sitting in front of him and asking as many questions about SSB process and his SSB experience and nothing else. This helped because when I attended my SSB after only 7 classes with this colonel (~49 hours) it didn’t feel like it was my first SSB. It felt like I knew the place and the process and this psychologically boosted my confidence 10 folds.

I remember asking him if any person can crack SSB with training and he said “I’m not training you here, I’m just telling you how SSB will be and educating you what OLQs mean. You will crack SSB only and only if you actually possess OLQs in you coz no one can coach OLQs to someone. SSB is designed to create situations where you can show your OLQs and I suggest you to be your original self.” SSB Interview Group Pic

My SSB experience:

17 SSB:  When I reached Selection Centre, Bangalore in Cubbon road, I loved the atmosphere and terrified by the attitude of the staff and officers. It was just so disciplined and strict and non-civilian type. I got used to that soon. There was lot of waiting, I mean..a lott! I think that’s how they test your patience before letting you into the exam hall.

Key take-aways:

Day #1: 8th May – Screening-in

Be loud, clear and quick, be it in written exam (Logical and Verbal and PPDT) or in the GD. In GD, try not to be kind and make sure your voice is loud and clear. Your points should have real depth and sense.

Day #2: Psychology

Be original and attempt 100% of the questions in WAT, SRT, TAT and Self-Description (Minimum 85%, at least). If you answer any less, it only means you are trying to fake the answers!

Day #3 and Day #4: GTO

Be first, be fresh and patient. There are times when there are all 8 people in your group fighting about how to solve a task. Be a leader, and organize their ideas instead of fighting with them. Prioritize well! Choose how you want to add value to your group (during GDs). Being a good leader is as important as being a good follower. You should give others a chance to lead if you feel their idea and approach is right (Happens in PGTs). Command you team at times when the spirits are low and cheer them up (especially in snake race)

Interview:

Make sure everything you write in the PIQ form (on Day #1) has some reason and do not write anything on that just because the question will be left blank. You are being hired for an officer position and every word you write ought to have a logic. You should know yourself first and for this, practice at home. Just take out your resume or make a rough copy of your bio-data and ask yourself why you did each thing on that bio-data. Get a reason for everything, you might not know it, think on it, and find the answer.

For ex: I got 85% in 10th Std., 96% in 12th and 82% in B. Tech. The interviewer asked me why were my marks going up-and-down and I explained him with a practical and truthful answer that my extra-curricular activities were at zero level in my 12th and hence I focused all my energy on academics. My achievements in school and college proved this right. So the interviewing officer was well convinced.

And when asked questions on issues related to current affairs, it’s ALWAYS ok to say ‘I don’t know, sir’ than beating around the bush! If he asks why you so poor at current affairs, you can always say that you are busy with your work all day and that you catch up news on a weekly basis or something logical of that sorts. Saying that current affairs don’t interest you be making a fool of yourself, so avoid such situations.

My conference went for around 45 seconds and all I was asked was ‘How was my stay at SSB’ and my answer was ‘Delightful’!

I can never forget the moment the officer shouted out my chest no. for getting ‘recommended’. Thanks to SSB Crack and Commando Training Academy for giving me everything for being #2 at CDS-II OTA. I’d be indebted to you forever.

I can’t thank my parents enough for their support and for bearing with me. My mom still cries if someone reminds her that I’m going into the army. Civilians, we are, till now.

Went to Gurdwaara after we got recommended. I’m on an extreme left. From left Abhijith, Sachin, Anirudh, Manjot.SSB Interview recommended candidate

9 Brutal Rules For Unfit Overweight Indian Army Officers

0

Army has brought out heavy artillery to fight the growing problem of obesity within its ranks. A new set of instructions said overweight personnel were a “public embarrassment due to slovenly appearance in uniform”.

Stung with observations from the top echelons of the government on the expanding waistlines of some officers, the Army HQ has prescribed stringent steps to check a “trend on the increase”. “The issue has serious ramifications, not only affecting combat readiness but also leading to avoidable ailments resulting in reduced life span in addition to public embarrassment due to slovenly appearance in uniform,” the instruction, sent to all commands on August 8 read.

The instructions for ‘enforcement measures to help check the menace of obesity’ have been sent for comments to all Army Commands. Officers and soldiers will be subjected to an annual obesity evaluation examination in case they ‘appear to be overweight’ and a set of photographs would be attached to their evaluation files.

Among the methods prescribed are a bar on overweight personnel to be considered for foreign postings, career courses or even tenures at ‘A Class’ cities. Overweight personnel will not be allowed for reemployment and would lose out on career advancement. Sources told ET that the crackdown is a personal initiative of Army chief Dalbir Singh, who is known for his exceptional fitness who still finds time to run 10 km daily.

Open Letter To Indian Air Force By A Defence Aspirant Who Travelled 150 KM To Write AFCAT

0
Open Letter To Indian Air Force By A Defence Aspirant

Respected Madam/Sir, Today while I went to write the AFCAT Exam. I brought to the attention of the Air Force Officers present in my venue that since there were two-time slots for the exam, one at 9AM-11AM and the other from 1PM – 3PM, there was a high probability that the papers could be leaked once the students from the morning batch are done with their exams. The officers informed me that the question papers would be different and I need not worry about such things and should just keep shut and mind my own business.

But to my utter disbelief, dismay, and shock the exact same paper was given for the afternoon session. I just don’t know what to say or how to feel about this. How could this kind of gross mismanagement happen on part of the Indian Air Force? Are the organizers so stupid that they could not understand this huge existing lacunae?

They allowed the students to take their question papers with them after the exam; considering the scenario when a student came out of their exam hall at 11AM and sent pictures of the question paper to their friends in other centers, giving a good two hour window for the paper leakage to happen. And I am not just describing a hypothetical situation here, this has happened in several places and obviously students will do such things if given an opportunity. It is the responsibility of the organizers to make sure that the system is fool-proof. This would have never happened in case of UPSC. Please look into the matter. This is of serious concern since thousands of students write this exam and it would bring havoc on their results.

Please take measures immediately to solve this problem. Either you could conduct a re-exam for the Afternoon batch of students, which would be logistically favourable or conduct re-exam for both the batches (which would entail huge costs). But please don’t repeat this kind of a mistake ever again in the future. Have different question papers for different sessions if you want to conduct the exam in sessions. And by different papers I don’t mean different series with just the order of the questions being changed. Have different questions. Ideally, just let UPSC handle the written exams, anyways writing multiple tests is fatiguing for students. But that’s completely your call, if you are able to conduct impeccable examinations with strict quality standards then it is absolutely fine.
I traveled close to 150KM for this exam and this kind of gross mismanagement is not something I expected.

If there are no suitable replies and redressal for this issue then I would be left with no option but to file a PIL in the Supreme Court of India.

I would please request the concerned authorities to look into this issue and bring immediate respite to the students.

Well before starting my experience at SSB Bangalore , I would like to inform you that I was a repeater and had got conferenced out the last time I attended ssb at AFSB Dehradun. So this time I had that most feared tag of being a repeater on my forehead.

So I started my journey from New Delhi railway station on 5th and reached Bangalore station on 8th. A bus came to take us and we were provided accommodation for the day. Next day
D+1 : we had our screening tests comprising of OIR and PPDT . Here I would suggest you to score as high as possible in the OIR since it counts in screening as well in the further process. Coming to PPDT, a hazy picture is shown and you have to write a story slight suggestion here : be very very logical and human with your character don’t make him a superhero . Effective narration and valuable points in discussion will get you screened in. In my batch 21 out of 48 got screened in.
D+2 : This is the psychology day so just be calm while you go out for these tests . They are just a simple test of what you feel just write natural stories , don’t try to be someone whom you aren’t .
Then in the lot is WAT . Try to be as possible , brief and positive in this test – these three things worked for me .
For SRT I believe quality matters more than quantity. Being natural honest and with the use of effective an intelligence, anybody can tackle them easily.
*Mind it I could do only 34 SRTs
Then is the last in the lot Self description test. This is where you express yourself and portray a positive image through parents, teachers, friends etc opinions . The fact is that don’t brag about your qualities be simplistic and outline your key weaknesses as well.

**FILLING OF HONEST PIQ FORM WILL HELP IN INTERVIEW SECTION .
D+3 : GTO1 : Gd was good , I gave 3-4 logical points in both the gd’s and also had that flexibility of mind to accept others point of view which helped me .
Then was GPE we easily came to a conclusion . Prioritizing is important . Next up are PGT and HGT , giving ideas and their proper implementation helps here . Then was group obstacle race followed by lecturette. Both of them went very well for me . Despite sore throat, I shouted war cry during GOR which motivated my team . *be logical talk sense and use English and knowledge in synchronous way to yield to maximum results in lecturette as well as maintain eye contact .
D+4 : Most important day for me as I had my personal interview as well as GTO2 including command task , individual obstacle race and final group task.
It all started with individual obstacle race which was good though I attempted obstacle no. 2 wrongly . Then was command task : I tell you folks it’s the most important determinant factor in your selection give it your best shot. Be a gentle commander , don’t order your subordinates work with them and complete the given task. Note: be justified with whom you choose as your subordinates and rest will all follow . My command task went fine and then was time for FGT which our group completed in a minute or so.

NDA SSB Recommended Candidates
Immediately after these tasks I had my personal interview with commandant of selection center , he is a major general so I was quite intimidated but somehow I calmed myself , went into his office gently and the way he interviewed me was phenomenal . There were questions from PIQ , some rapid fires on family , education, friends etc . Also were questions from General science (physics chemistry etc ) . He asked me about saarc, asean , Sco , South China Sea ,Kashmir insurgency and many more which I replied in detail. The experience was amazing and I had a great time being interviewed by him.
Now the last and most dreaded day of conference came : interestingly for me and Vaibhav , chest no. 18 conference went for a longer period. There was a discussion of around 20 minutes before calling me in and then various questions including SRTs were asked for next 15 minutes .
Came the time of results when Mam started announcing chest nos. She came up to 18 and said an “and” . My heart stopped for a moment and then she said 19 . I was blank at the moment and I filled up with mixed feelings of joy , surprise , of dream coming true and what not. I in my jubilation called out my name aloud and that was it. For next 8 days we had our Medicals and I have been declared medically fit and am just waiting for merit list .
Imp. : this is a personal advice instead of wasting time after your tasks get over sit down in front of Internet and read about things say editorials and things that will provide you knowledge . This habit helped me and may surely help you.
Regards: Shantanu Singhal
