Is General Knowledge Important for SSB?

2

A big ghost that haunts us in every exam General Knowledge! In written exams we are already scared of it and then in interview also it appears! This article is going to solve all the doubts you have regarding the big question, is GK that important in SSB? There are candidates who are literally like encyclopedia and then too they don’t get recommended and then there are candidates who know not a single thing related to GK still they get through. Confusing, isn’t it?

What is the syllabus of GK for SSB?

The syllabus of GK for SSB is very wide and very narrow! Its simple GK in SSB can be anything. It could be something related to the current events and happenings, to something related to your basic subjects of graduation. It could be anything related to the job you are doing or anything related to the city you are living. Thus GK in SSB can be something related to you, to your country, your world! Some candidates have even been asked very out of the box questions.

Is General Knowledge Important for SSB?

How can I prepare it?

Now after reading the syllabus of GK for SSB do you think you can ever prepare it in a day? No! It takes time; you need to be observant enough to notice small things around you. It has to come in your habit. It is not exactly a subject which you can master. In fact you can’t ever master the GK for SSB, but you can do your best by trying to know the maximum around you. Suppose happens to be a surprise test in your class. Who will pass and who will fail? The one who has studied regularly will pass. Same is the case with preparation of GK.

Now the Big Question

Having read the syllabus of GK and the strategy of preparation for it, now ask yourself a question, isn’t GK important? Yes in a way it is because GK for SSB contains everything related to you and your surroundings, so as an observant person you are expected to know atleast something about the surrounding. There must be one more question popping up in your mind that then how the people who knew nothing of the current events pass, well you yourself know the answer, current events as such are not important, but the GK of SSB has much more than current events. It could be that they knew those parts well.
News, recent procurements and other things are not of utmost importance. SSB is a personality test and not a test of Current Affairs. Yet we ask you to read newspaper and books because they give an upper hand in the Group Discussion and lecturette. GD is everything about knowledge, the more you know the more relevant you’ll speak and more marks you’ll get. Thus knowing stuff related to the events and happening of national and international importance will help you in GD, lecturette and even in the Personal Interview it’ll help you if you are asked any such question.
Conclusion: GK holds a fairly good amount of importance in SSB. Why not go prepared if you have time, resource and amenities, after all it is a job which everybody dreams of, so why not go with full preparations.

Individual Obstacle in SSB

Individual Obstacle in SSB

Individual obstacle test is the part of Group Task in SSB. In this test there are a series of obstacles placed one after the other, your aim is to cross successfully maximum of them in the allotted time. The number of obstacles varies for men and women. The time given is 3 minutes. Men have to complete 10 obstacles and women seven in the given three minutes. The type of obstacle varies from board to board. However here are some general obstacles: High Jump, Barrel Jump, Double Jump, Tarzan Swing, Tiger Leap, Burma Bridge, Rope climb, Commando walk, Double ditch, Screen jump, Balance beam, Monkey Crawl etc.

Here are a few things which you must know about the Individual Obstacle:
  1. Each obstacle carries a mark according to the difficulty level, the obstacle with the highest difficulty level carries 10 marks and subsequently the others have 9, 8, 7,..1 mark.
  2. The candidate can repeat the obstacle course once he/ she have completed the entire obstacle and the time still remains.
    Individual Obstacle in SSB
  3. This test provides you with an excellent chance to get marks, as you have to do the exercise individually and all you have to worry about is your own performance.
  4. The candidates are called one after the other according to the chest number in the group.
  5. Be very careful of the bells, one bell is rung after 2 and half minutes are over, this bell indicates two things, one that only 30 seconds are left for the candidate who is doing the course, and other that the next candidate should come and get ready, thus stand near the obstacle from where he/she wants to begin.
  6. Then at the end of three minutes there is a bell which indicates the time for the candidate who was doing the course is over and for the next candidate has started.
  7. Listen to the instruction of the GTO very carefully.
  8. Before the beginning of this test, the GTO will introduce you with each obstacle and then there will be a person who will do all the obstacles and show you how they are done.
  9. Once you are being introduced to the obstacles be very attentive and decide from where you want to begin.
  10. It is better to finish the balancing obstacle in the beginning as it becomes difficult to balance your body once you are exhausted after doing the maximum of the course.
  11. This is not a test of your medical fitness.
  12. It is just a test to check your optimum fitness, whether you have the attitude of never say die and whether you have the mental power to sustain in the training.
  13. The obstacles are definitely not something which you do in your daily life, and practically it is not possible to build a course at home and practice them, you should just be fit enough to not injure yourself and sustain for those three minutes.
  14. The most important thing seen through this test is the spirit of trying. You should try hard to do the maximum and stretch your capability by putting the maximum effort.
  15. Remember if you get injured in this, it’ll not gain you any sympathy and in fact will be harmful for you as it will affect your chances of getting selected. This is so because if you injure yourself that means you’ll not perform well in the other tests.
  16. A good officer knows how important he is and knows how to prevent himself, do not take a risk where you are sure of injury. Being fearless is good but being foolish is something different.
  17. It is advised to practice running, jogging and skipping to build up stamina, and sustain yourself for the whole durations of Individual Obstacle, so that you may give your best.

In Conversation with Madhulika Ci, Recommended For IAF

It is always beneficial to see the SSB through the eyes of the recommended candidates. Here is a conversation with  Madhulika Ci, A lawyer by profession (BCA+LLB in her education), who has cleared her SSB interview for IAF, from 3 AFSB Gandhinagar for the Ground Duty Branch and is all geared up to get set and go to Air Force Academy in July 2014.
Q. Hello Madhulika first of all heartiest congratulations from our side. Tell us how does it feel to be on the verge of joining Indian Airforce?A. Thank You. It feels great! The anticipation is nerve wrecking but I am very excited and hoping for the best!

Q. How was the SSB experience in total?
A. It was very swift. I met great people, made excellent friends but the 5 days were not enough. The 1 week spent just flies by and you are left with fond memories.
Recommended+For+IAFQ. As for the readers, 3 AFSB is a new board so please elaborate your experience of how was 3 AFSB?
A. The center is based in sector 9 of the capital city of Gujarat. On reaching the center one of the first noticeable things is its small size in comparison with other centers. Being fairly new and parts of it are still under construction. The capacity of the center to hold candidates is lesser due to obvious reasons but none the less what it lacks in size and capacity, it more than makes up for the excellent conditions of the rooms.
Q. What was your inspiration behind joining the IAF?
A. I wanted to be a part of the legacy that the IAF is. In a country of scientists, engineers and doctors, being a part of the IAF is an honor and a privilege. The uniform works too!
Q. First BCA, then LLB you sure have got a different kind of approach to your career, having an entirely different kind of courses. Was this question never raised to you in your SSB personal interview?
A. All the time! You wouldn’t believe the grilling I got in interviews! But I went with the honest answer. I did what was best and had best opportunities. I got a good job with BCA and could put myself through law school. Having both the degrees makes me have a good understanding of various untapped opportunities for in the future. I put the same across (in different words of course) and i am guessing they saw the truth in it.
Q. What was the attempt in which you cleared the SSB?
A. My fourth. Finally!
In Conversation with Madhulika Ci, Recommended For IAF
Q. So didn’t you give up hope in previous attempts? What made you succeed in this attempt?
A. I didn’t. And contrary to what the popular belief is, only positivity will not help you overcome hurdles. With each failed attempt i would go through the whole testing procedure in mind and wonder where i went wrong. It was frustrating. I felt very demoralized and questioned myself over and over again. I had nothing to help me understand what the problem was exactly. The books helped to a certain degree. But after the first time, the books had nothing new to offer me. I still went for SSB as i had a time constraint and dint want to lose out on attempts. Nothing worked. So here’s what i realized after all the failures. There is no specific set of rules. The SSB is a personality test. Being you is quite enough. I am not undermining the importance of GK and positive outlook but they alone would not work. I spoke to various people who had cleared and they all gave diff answers. So I went to a coaching center, got new books and started understanding my personality better. The optimism made me try again, but the preparatory steps i took are what put me through.
Q. Do you think coaching does really help the aspirants?
A. If a person is really interested in joining the forces, and then I would suggest it, yes. There are lots of people who clear it without coaching and people who don’t clear it even with coaching. But in the end it all boils down to how much do you really want it? When a failed attempt would hamper your chances the next time, do you want to take the risk?
Q. What was your success mantra?
A. Perseverance, Confidence, Identifying and utilizing resources, hard work (Lots of it!), optimism. Of course having an amazing group of girls in the group who were there in every step of the way helped 😉
Q. Does the group you get affect the chances of success in the SSB?
A. Absolutely. The group makes up for 1/3rd of your testing and determines whether you get through or not. Having a good group with positive dynamics helps you prepare for the testing better. They are comrades and affect your performance directly and indirectly. A good group can make all the difference because in the end, the services need a candidate who is accepted and supported by his/her peers.
Q. Which was your favorite part of the whole SSB procedure and why?
A. It is difficult to choose one but I find the testing procedure itself very exhilarating. You test yourself every step of the way. Intellect, Social skills and physical strength. Everything that you are is put to use. No amount of camouflage works. And the pressure helps you get stronger. Irrespective of the results, the SSB experience is one to cherish and all must try it at least once.
Q. Any tips for the repeaters and other fresher aspirants in general?
A. Freshers: The armed forces want a realist. Be realistic in your approach to yourself and your future. Believe in yourself ( I know it sounds cliché but its true!) and your abilities. Have a high aim and aspire to be better. Confidence and a level head will help you achieve.
Repeaters: Continue your hard work. You have it tougher than the freshers and it’s not easy to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over. I know. But your determination gives you an added focus and motivation. Understand and use all the resources at your disposal. Books, the internet, coaching centers, people with knowledge, they are all there to help you realize your dreams. Take all the help you need, harness all that new knowledge and put it to the best use. It’ll all be worth it. All the best!!
Q. Give one most essential thing according to you which is required to clear the SSB?
A. What you do, think and say should all be the same. Transparency of your true self
Thank you for speaking to SSBCrack Madhulika. All the best for your Merit List.
Madhulika: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure. Keep up the good work 🙂
