My Journey From Indian Army Jawan To Cracking SSB Interview

0
FROM ARMY JAWAN TO ARMY OFFICER

Hello, defence aspirants, this is my story of becoming an Indian army officer from OR. I hope this story will help and motivate the defence aspirants and my fellow soldier brothers.  It has been three years since I join the Indian army serve the motherland as it was always my dream to be in the uniform. Indian army provides a lot of opportunities to its soldier to rise through the ranks through various Indian army service entries like ACC, SCO and PC(SL).
Books For SSB Interview Preparation [ 100% Recommended]

I decided to grab the opportunity to become a commissioned officer through ACC entry which is also know as Army Cadet College Entry. I applied for the ACC entry through by education JCOs internally as this entry is only for the serving soldiers and you have to apply for it through internal channel. I cleared the ACC exam and SSB interview in my 1st attempt, I decided to write something to motivate other defence aspirants, hope my story will be helpful in your journey towards success.

So this is my story to cracking SSB from a soldier. After 9 months of training in the Indian army, I was posted in a unit and I decided to write the ACC exam, all my seniors and colleagues in my unit supported me in this endeavor as you know life in a peace station is really busy and one has to do more than one task and our day and night duty is always there, but I had that burning desire inside me to reach that level so I always read books in my short leisure time , if you are opting for it you have to sacrifice your sleep. Nothing is impossible but it is also not that easy, luck only favours those who work hard towards their goals. I remember the endless effort and struggle day and night to reach this goal which is the dream of many aspirants.

In my journey to achieve this goal, I experienced that there is no substitute to hard work and whatever your conditions are, you are not supposed to give any excuses if you want to achieve your goals, in fact, the army life is all about NO Excuses and only positive results. There were moments when the goals look too hard to achieve and you also need to cope up with your current duties, it was really difficult to manage all but at the end what matters is the success and the taste of it.

SSB Interview Psychology Tests

For improving psychology I read few good books and started doing things in practical, for GTO task I did my daily duty timely, coordinated with fellow soldiers and maintained a healthy relation with seniors as well as juniors. My CO (commanding officer) and other officers and JCOs were all concerned as even after so much of motivation and support candidates were only clearing written exam, for SSB interview they provided spare time, knowledge about trade work,  arms, and many more. My unit sent me for PDP classes and I also took up a coaching class in The Lakshya Academy Delhi, I learned a lot of new things during my preparation, it enhanced my thinking power as well.

No to forget the support of SSBCrack, the Instagram page of SSBCrack had made a great influence while preparing for the SSB interview and  SSBCrack Interview Books for SSB are the one I would recommend to all the defence aspirants preparing for the SSB interview. One thing good while preparing for SSB interview is you will know more about yourself and make you a good person with right attitude. I have done my best and have completed my first task in life, I would like to thank my Parents, friends and above all, My Unit which helped and supported me during my tough times. The life in the army is not easy but people who dare to live this life can achieve anything.

Indian Army Women Officers

It seems the dream of joining the National Defence Academy for the young girl will be a possibility soon. Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre said Thursday that moves are underway to allow the entry of women into combat roles and a proposal is being actively considered to allow admission of girls at the National Defence Academy (NDA). Dr. Subhash Bhamre was speaking at the inauguration of the newly sanctioned Industrial Training Institute (ITI) — the first in Pune Cantonment.

At present only male candidates can join the National Defence Academy after 12th for the Indian army, air force and Indian navy after writing the CDS exam which is conducted by UPSC two times every year. Women can not join the National Defence Academy yet and they can only apply for the Army, Navy, and Airforce after graduation. Opening up the gates of NDA would be a bold move by the government and it will be interesting to see how soon this will come into reality.

The Indian Armed Forces are completing the process to introduce permanent commissioning for women in its three services — the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre said Thursday that moves are underway to allow the entry of women into combat roles and a proposal is being actively considered to allow admission of girls at the National Defence Academy (NDA).

Bhamre was speaking at the inauguration of the newly sanctioned Industrial Training Institute (ITI) — the first in Pune Cantonment. Deepa Bajwa, the new Director-General, Defence Estates, Ministry of Defence, and others were present. Bhamre also released the logo of the newly set up Dr. Ambedkar Memorial ITI. Bhamre also said that Pune Cantonment was the first to set up 20 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant, which is a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

10 Points You Must Know About India Russian S-400 Triumf Missile Deal

0

Vladimir Putin on a two-day visit to India signed a $5 billion deal to procure Moscow’s most advanced air defence system, the S-400 Triumf, risking US sanctions. The Indian Russian s-400 Missile deal is one of the most talked defence deals ever and candidates preparing for the various competitive exams, group discussion and interviews must read and understanding few important pointed related to Indian-Russia s-400 missile deal.

About S-400 Triumf Missile

  • The S-400 is one of the world’s most advanced long-range air defence systems, capable of destroying cruise, ballistic missiles.
  • S-400 radar can track targets 600 km away.
  • Manufactured by the Russian government-owned arms company Almaz-Antey, the S-400 Triumf is known as the SA-21 Growler by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or NATO. It has been in service in Russia since 2007.S-400 Triumf Missile

India and the need of S-400 Missile

  • The Air Force Chief BS Dhanoa said recently that S-400 would be like a “booster shot” in the Indian Air Force’s (IAF).
  • India needs a missile system like S-400 to protect itself against neighboring threats. Pakistan has over 20 fighter squadrons, with upgraded F-16s, and inducting J-17 from China in large numbers. China has 1,700 fighters, including 800 4-Gen fighters.

India Russia S-400 Triumf Missile Deal

  • In October 2015, it was reported that India’s Defence Acquisition Council is considering acquire 12 units of S-400 for its defence needs. However, on 17 December 2015, it was confirmed that the final order will be for five units rather than 12 units as 5 are considered to be adequate for India’s defensive needs. The deal is worth US$5.5 billion. On 15 October 2016, on the sidelines of BRICS Summit, India and Russia signed an Inter-governmental Agreement (IGA) for the supply of five S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems and the final discussion of terms of the contract is underway as of 2 June 2017.
  • In April 2018, Russian and Indian media reported a deal was close to being reached, and the deal was expected to be signed before a summit involving the leaders of the two countries in October 2018. On 5 October 2018, during a summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, India and Russia signed a US$5.43 billion deal for five S-400 missile systems. The deal was signed by the Joint Secretary of Land Systems from India and the Director General, Rosoboronexport of Russia. The deliveries will begin in 24 months, which is end 2020.

What is CAATSA and it’s significance with Indian Russian S-400 Deal?

  • The United States had last year enacted a law for the implementation of certain sanctions on Russia.
  • The US has urged all its allies to curtail relations with Russia’s intelligence and defence sectors.
  • Under the new law, the US administration is required to impose sanctions on any country that has signed significant transactions with Russia, Iran and North Korea.
  • China was the first nation to buy the S-400 missile system in 2014. Russia has already started deliveries of an undisclosed number of the S-400 missile system to Beijing.
  • Last year Moscow signed a contract to sell the systems to Turkey. Other than India, Russia is also negotiating with Qatar to sell its S-400 Triumf. Indian Russia S 400 Deal
CAATSA on S 400 deal
First US statement after India-Russia S400 deal: ‘CAATSA not intended to impose damage to the military capabilities of our allies or partners. Intent of our implementation of CAATSA is to impose costs on Russia for its malign behaviour.’

Why is SSB Screening Test a Nightmare?

0
thematic-apperception-test-tat

Getting screened out is indeed a very disheartening experience. A candidate puts in several months of hard work before reaching the SSB and getting screened out can be devastating. I have seen several candidates weeping at the SSB when they are asked to board the bus. In my seven years of guiding defence aspirants, I have heard several questions on screening and I tried my best to answer these but the nature of the test being practical, it becomes difficult to explain theoretically. Often candidate mention that they narrated the story well and also discussed it well and yet they got screened out. The fact of the matter is the quality of the story is equally important. Further just speaking a number of times during the discussion will not be enough. The candidate has to prove himself to be effective in the group.

image 2

The second myth is about OIR test which is conducted as part of the screening process. Many candidates feel that it may be because of OIR that they did not make it. But the reality is that OIR plays much less role. If we go by statistics, whenever a large number of candidates take a test the result resembles a normal or bell curve. Since OIR is measured on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the best and 5 being the worst, the mean, median and mode is OIR 3 which is acceptable. This means 50 % of the candidates are well within the passable range. For the remaining who have scored OIR 4 and 5, if they perform well in the PP&DT, and if the assessors feel that the candidate has the potential, he will be screened in. Thus, screening heavily depends on one’s performance in the PP&DT.

When it comes to PP&DT there are three aspects that are closely seen. Firstly, the quality of the story. The story must closely relate to the image shown and must involve action. Most commonly made mistakes are as follows:-

  1. Several candidates write stories that are not originated from the image and these are termed as preconceived or premeditated synthetic stories.
  2. Many candidates show a very low-level imagination with no action in their story. Unless the main character is involved in some positive action, the story will not be appealing.
  3. Some candidates insert a superficial problem and make the main character solve the problem. This again is a sure way to getting screened out.

In narration, the assessors get to see the candidate’s confidence and communication skills. If these are not adequate and if the candidate is not able to briefly narrate the story, his chances of getting eliminated are very high as such candidates won’t be able to perform in stage two testing. Hence narrating confidently and clearly is very important.

Finally, the discussion is very important. Several candidates tend to speak with the crowd and keep repeating their own story without understanding the purpose of the discussion. The purpose of the discussion is to come to a common story and any candidate trying to contribute towards this objective is seen favourably. Avoid the following during the discussion:-

  1. Avoid selling your own story unless you are really convinced that your story is the best
  2. Try and promote the story that appeals to you OR
  3. Promote a common theme that may have been narrated by many

How Much To Score In AFCAT Exam To Get In Merit

3
AFCAT MARKS + AFSB MARKS

Many candidates are asking about the AFCAT marks and how low and high marks in AFCAT written exam affect your IAF Final AFSB merit list. Many candidates who have scored fewer marks in AFCAT means who have scored near AFCAT cut off marks are worried about the merit list. For example, the AFCAT 2 2018 cut off marks are 140 marks out of 300 marks and aspirant who have just cleared the AFCAT cut off are thinking if it is worthy to attend the AFSB interview because they might not clear the Indian Airforce final merit list with such a less AFCAT score.

Course Year No. Of Candidates Merit In
July 2018 148
January 2018 99
July 2017 98
January 2017 84

So you can see that the total intake in the recent years hardly went up to 150 candidates which itself shows the level of competition as around 2 Lakh candidates appear for AFCAT and EKT two times every year and the number of candidates applying for AFCAT is increasing with time. Not more than 200-300 candidates clear AFSB interview from various AFSB through CDS and AFCAT entry and the final intake is mentioned above.

AFCAT MARKS + AFSB MARKS

Will AFCAT marks affect the merit list?

  • Yes, AFCAT marks do affect the merit list because they are added while preparing the final merit list. The final merit list is the combination of your AFCAT marks and AFSB interview marks.
  • Having low AFCAT score will affect your final merit list so it is always suggested to score better in AFCAT but that doesn’t mean that you do not have chance to get merit in, your AFSB interview performance also matters a lot and there are many candidates who were merited out even after scoring around 200 marks in AFCAT because of low AFSB interview score.
  • AFSB interview consists of total 300 marks and AFCAT consist of 300 marks so that total score will be out of 600 marks.
  • Top recommended performers at AFSB score between 140 – 160 marks out of 300 and bottom recommended performers score around 80-90 marks out of 300 marks. As you can see, even you are recommended, your AFSB interview score can be around 90-100 marks out of 300 which itself can affect your final merit list irrespective of how you have scored in AFCAT exam.SSB Interview Marks
  • Should I attend AFSB interview with borderline marks? Yes, why not, you are among very few who have cleared the AFCAT exam and got a chance to face the AFSB interview, it is already mentioned above that the merit list is the combination of both AFCAT and AFSB interview marks and having low AFCAT score doesn’t mean that you do not have a chance.SSB Marks Low

Ace the AFSB Psychological Tests

How to score more in AFSB interview?

  • AFSB interview is similar to SSB interview, it is a 5-day testing process which mainly consists of 3 major tests namely, Psychological Tests, Personal Interview and GTO. The marks you score in AFSB interview come from the way you perform during these testings and not when you are sleeping or playing inside the AFSB campus. What you perform is what you get.
  • To put this simply, if someone answers most of the current affairs questions asked to him/her in the personal interview, surely he/she will get some marks in that section compared to the guy who was not able to answer few or answered them wrong.
  • For example, in GTO, the number of individual obstacles attempted successfully has no connection to getting recommended or not. But, a recommended candidate who attempts more obstacles than the other, surely he will get more points in that.
  • In short, the way you perform at AFSB will decide your AFSB interview marks. So, always try to give your best in all whatever you face at AFSB.
  • Also, you need to remember that AFSB interview is a personality based and your personality is defined with various things, your main objective must be to clear the AFSB interview and not to think much about how you are performing, if you think about tasks you have already performed, it might hamper your performance in the upcoming tests. So, always be with the clean, clear and positive mindset. There is nothing good or bad, there is no right and wrong, it is all about them finding the best fit for the organisation.
  • At last, we suggest you forget about your AFCAT score and focus on the AFSB interview. Even if you do not make it in the final merit list, clearing AFSB interview itself is a big challenge and it teaches you good lessons for the life.

Hope this will help you in your upcoming AFSB interviews. if you are preparing the interview, we suggest you get the SSBCrack books for the preparation that have benefited 1000s of defence aspirants.

APJ Abdul Kalam sir has quoted in his book “Dreams are not those which come while we are sleeping, but dreams are those which do not let us sleep.” Hi friends.  My name is RAVINDER KATANIA. I have given 8 attempts out of which I have 2 screened out, 2 conference out and 4 recommendations. My father is a JCO in INDIAN NAVY and I have done my schooling from NAVY CHILDREN SCHOOL. I was the Sports Captain of my school. The lifestyle of defense has always attracted me. And therefore my dream is to have stars on my shoulders.
SSB Interview Preparation Material [ 100% Recommended]

My journey to fulfill this dream started in 2014 when I gave my first NDA SSB. I was too nervous and therefore got screened out. 29 people were recommended in that batch. Many of them were my classmates. I felt bad for a few days but then returned to my normal self and I did not work upon my personality. After this, I gave 2 more NDA SSBs in which I got conference out and screened out. The mistake I made was NOT PREPARING for the SSBs. I  missed the chance to join NDA and then I joined an engineering college.

During college, there were times when I thought I do not have it in me. I used to daydream about being an Army officer. During college, my younger brother got into NDA. I visited NDA and realized what I had missed. That day I made a promise to myself that I will not miss IMA chance. Though a 9 pointer, I did not opt for college placements and focused on SSB only.

I started journal writing. I recorded my day and my feelings and thoughts on paper. This helped me to organise my thoughts. First half hour of the day, I used to spend on planning for the day and used the last half hour for journal writing. This was my long-term preparation for SSB.

I got my first call letter for TGC 127 SSB during the final year of engineering. One month before the SSB, I downloaded TAT WAT SRT series from SSBCrack. I divided the month into 4 phases. First 10 days, I practiced TAT by writing. I wrote the observations from the TAT picture and put a questions mark on each observation. Then I thought of my own answers to those questions and connected them to form a simple story. I kept my story as simple as possible. I practiced 1 TAT set each day taking my own time for each picture.

After this, I started preparation for the personal interview. I wrote all my answers for the rapid-fire questions and also prepared my answers for the cross questions. This took me 5 days. I wrote all my answers for what all I did in my life and why I did it. Then I practiced WAT SRT for the next 5 days. For WAT I thought of another word which can replace the word given and then connected these 2 words in a sentence of my own. I kept my SRT answers as small and simple as possible. I wrote the actions which I would do in real life situations. Last 10 days were for my revision and final touch up of the preparation. I gave my 100 percent for the preparation.

The first SSB I gave was TGC 127 ( 24 SSB Bangalore). 400+ people reported for the screening. I was very nervous. I motivated myself by repeating the lines, “If not me then who ?”

I was nervous before every task during the 5 days. But during the task, I kept my cool. I did not think about the tasks which were over. I focused on quality and not on quantity. During the conference result when my chest number was called out, my brain went completely blank. It was the best feeling ever. I could see my dream getting fulfilled. But I got medical unfit for this entry. Again, I was recommended for CDS 2 2017 ( IMA ) ( 17 SSB Bangalore). But I had another heartbreak in the form of medical unfit. Family and friends encouraged me and I started preparing for my next SSBs. I was again recommended for CDS 1 2018 ( IMA ) (17 SSB Bangalore) and TGC 128 ( 34 SSB Allahabad ). I am medically fit for both and waiting for merit list. It is the hard work and preparation that matters. After 4 recommendations I believe simplicity is the key to success in SSB.

How I Got Recommended For NDA In 5th Attempt

How I Got Recommended For NDA In 5th attempt

Hello everyone.  Friends my name is Avinash and I am from Lucknow, a defense aspirant from childhood.  My journey started from last year after I passed class 12. Clearing NDA written exam became a challenge for me but I was appearing for  TES and NAVY  tech. My first SSB was on 10 August 2017 at Allahabad for TES 38. I got screened in easily. At that time I was a little casual person and I did some mistakes in GTOs. My interview went for 15 minutes only. I was unable to make it at that time. I got conference out. A huge failure for me. I was unable to forget it for about a month.

After that, I appeared for NAVY  tech SSB at Coimbatore where I got screened out because the GD of my group was not healthy. Again a disappointment.

Then a smile on my face as I saw TES 39 notification. My SSB was on 25 Jan 2018 at Banglore. Preparations were going on but, again I got screened out. This time I was very upset I decided to not appear for direct entries but, my friends helped me out.  I went to appear for my NAVY tech SSB which was at Coimbatore again on 6 Feb. I had a clear aim to get screened in first and I did it. After getting screened in from  216 candidates I was having a different smile on my face.  My psychology went well as well as the interview but GTOs again ruined my graph. Only one got recommended out of 36 and again a failure in my life.

I gave my 5th NDA with full confidence and yes this time finally I cleared it. Extreme happiness in my inner world. For SSB I changed my approach. I gave up writing stories daily but started analyzing my day to day activities. Started reading self-help books, editorials and day by day I was able to notice a change in my personality.  My NDA SSB was on 18 August. I did well in PPDT and got screened in. For the psychological test, I just tried to relate myself with the picture and wrote my actions in that situation. In WAT I wrote maximum observational responses and in this way, my psychology test went well.SSB interview candidates

In GTOs, I just cooperated with my group. I even asked my subordinate for help in command task as I was not having any idea. My interview was just after my GTO, Firstly he asked me about my GTO performance and my stay and then a series of question from PIQ after answering them he asked me about my daily routine and I told him everything which included newspaper reading. He asked me to tell three national and international news and to elaborate on anyone. I told all news and said to him that I want to elaborate Kerala floods but he told me elaborate Venezuela crisis, I explained about it briefly. He then asked me that who is the president of Venezuela and I said I do not remember exactly but his title is Maduro.  Then he said how you got all these information and I replied that sir I follow you tube. He asked me the no. of individual obstacles I did as my hobby is Calisthenic. I said 15 and he said ok .

My  interview was over now. My conference was also very short and then came the results the first chest no. he named was 22. I was shocked . I thought I am dreaming but yes this was the moment for which I had struggled a lot . I was in the same conference hall where my journey had started. A huge satisfaction in myself and my confidence again built up. Friends keep working on yourself because “Sometime it delays but Hardwork always pays”.

After that, I went to Banglore for TES 40 on 7 sep and got recommended there also. I just hope that my experience will help you all. Keep going.
