The U.S. European Command has confirmed that the United States has seized the tanker M/V Bella 1 in the North Atlantic for violations of U.S. sanctions, marking a significant enforcement action against illicit maritime activities.
According to an official statement, the seizure was carried out by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, in coordination with the U.S. Department of Defense. The operation was conducted pursuant to a warrant issued by a U.S. federal court after the vessel was tracked by the U.S. Coast Guard cutter USCGC Munro.
Authorities said the seizure supports a presidential proclamation issued by President of the United States targeting sanctioned vessels that pose a threat to the security and stability of the Western Hemisphere. The tanker had been under surveillance for suspected involvement in sanctions evasion activities.

The operation was executed by DHS components with support from the Department of Defense, underscoring what officials described as a “whole-of-government approach” to sanctions enforcement and maritime security. U.S. European Command highlighted that the coordinated action reflects Washington’s resolve to disrupt illicit maritime networks and protect national and regional security interests.
The seizure of M/V Bella 1 comes amid intensified U.S. efforts to enforce sanctions at sea, particularly against vessels accused of supporting sanctioned states or entities through deceptive shipping practices.
