Major General Vinod K. Nambiar, YSM, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding of the Armed Forces Special Operations Division (AFSOD), delivered an insightful lecture on the role, organisation, and capabilities of special operations forces in Multi-Domain Operations to a joint audience from the three services at the Army War College (AWC).
The session brought together officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, providing a platform to discuss the evolving nature of modern warfare and the increasing importance of integrated operations across multiple domains. During his address, Maj Gen Nambiar highlighted how special operations forces play a crucial role in contemporary military strategies, particularly in complex and high-risk environments.

He elaborated on the structure and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces Special Operations Division, which is India’s tri-service special operations command responsible for coordinating specialised missions across the services. The division integrates elite units from the Army, Navy, and Air Force to conduct strategic operations including counter-terrorism, strategic reconnaissance, direct action missions, and other high-value tasks.
Maj Gen Nambiar also emphasised the significance of Multi-Domain Operations, where military forces must operate seamlessly across land, air, sea, cyber, and space domains. He noted that the future battlefield will require greater coordination, real-time information sharing, and advanced technological integration to achieve mission success.
The lecture provided valuable insights into the operational philosophy and strategic importance of joint special operations in strengthening India’s defence capabilities. It also highlighted the importance of joint training and professional military education in preparing officers for complex operational scenarios.
The interaction at the Army War College reinforced the importance of tri-service synergy and strategic thinking as the Indian Armed Forces continue to adapt to the demands of modern warfare.
