Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh reviewed the operational preparedness of the Indian Air Force’s Eastern Air Command (EAC) in Shillong on 20 June 2026 and underscored the importance of technological agility, strategic foresight and institutional innovation in addressing the challenges of modern warfare.
Interacting with air warriors and personnel at the Eastern Air Command Headquarters, the Defence Minister highlighted the rapidly evolving nature of global security challenges and emphasised that traditional military preparedness alone is no longer sufficient in today’s uncertain world order.

He stated that hybrid warfare, cyber threats, information warfare, logistics resilience, supply chain security and drone-based operations have emerged as critical components of contemporary conflicts, requiring the Armed Forces to continuously adapt and modernise.
Reiterating the importance of self-reliance in defence, Rajnath Singh described Aatmanirbharta as essential for safeguarding national security on India’s own terms. He noted that the success of Operation Sindoor demonstrated the growing strength of indigenous defence capabilities and reflected the country’s progress in building self-reliant military systems.

The Raksha Mantri asserted that Operation Sindoor sent a clear message to terrorists and their supporters that India would not compromise on its security and sovereignty. He praised the vigilance, capability and determination of the Armed Forces, stating that their performance had further enhanced India’s standing on the global stage.
Commending the Eastern Air Command, Rajnath Singh described it as a vital pillar of India’s eastern frontier security architecture. He lauded the command for its professionalism and contributions across a range of operational roles, including border management, high-altitude operations, disaster response and peacetime deployments.
Highlighting the strategic significance of the North-East, he stated that the region is not merely a geographical frontier but a crucial component of India’s security, prosperity and Act East Policy. He added that the growing importance of the Indo-Pacific region has further elevated the strategic relevance of the North-East.
The Defence Minister also praised the dedication and sacrifices of military personnel serving in challenging operational environments, noting that their commitment enables citizens to live securely and ensures rapid assistance during natural disasters and national emergencies.

Rajnath Singh further emphasised the role of the Armed Forces as a symbol of national unity and social cohesion. He noted that the increasing participation of women in the military reflects India’s commitment to inclusivity, equality and progress while remaining rooted in its cultural values.
The event was attended by Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia, and other senior Indian Air Force officials.
