Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, visited 16th Light Cavalry on the occasion of its 250th Raising Day, commemorating the rich legacy of the oldest armoured regiment of the Indian Army and the first Indianised regiment in 1922.

The Regiment’s distinguished combat record reflects its decisive offensive spirit and unwavering professionalism. Its capture of Gadgor during the 1965 war earned the Theatre Honour Punjab, followed by a major armoured thrust through the Shakargarh Bulge in the 1971 war. The regiment also holds the unique distinction of being the only armoured regiment to have participated in the Kargil conflict during Operation Vijay in 1999, supporting the capture of Tololing under challenging high-altitude conditions.

During the visit, Lt Gen Seth paid solemn homage to the Regiment’s fallen heroes with a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial and reviewed the Mounted Parade. He interacted with veterans and their families, acknowledging their enduring contribution in preserving regimental ethos and supporting the spirit of service across generations.

Addressing all ranks, the Army Commander exhorted them to remain professionally exceptional and operationally agile, while accelerating technology absorption to stay ahead of evolving threats. He emphasised upholding the Regiment’s time-honoured standards of valour, discipline and duty in continued service to the nation.
