In a display of heightened readiness and technological prowess, the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted a successful test-fire of its newly inducted Surface to Air Missile for Assured Retaliation (SAMAR) air-defence system during Exercise โVayu Shakti-24โฒ.
The exercise unfolded at the Pokhran range near Jaisalmer on 17 February, drawing attention to Indiaโs steadfast commitment to bolstering its air defence capabilities.
According to a press release issued by the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) on 17 February, the Indian Air Force test-fired SAMAR in conjunction with the Akash surface-to-air missile weapon system.
The coordinated effort resulted in the destruction of โmultiple aerial targets,โ underscoring the systemโs effectiveness in countering airborne threats.
SAMAR, which was formally inducted into the Indian Air Forceโs arsenal in December 2023, underwent its maiden test-fire at Air Force Station Suryalanka, situated in the southern coastal region of India.
As a crucial component of Indiaโs short-range air-defence system, SAMAR air-defence system boasts the capability to intercept low-flying aerial targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles, loitering munitions, and attack helicopters, within a range of 12 km at speeds of up to Mach 2.5.
The development and production of SAMAR represent a collaborative effort between the Indian Air Forceโs 7 Base Repair Depot (BRD) and 11 BRD, in conjunction with Indian private-sector companies Simran Flowtech Industries and Yamazuki Denki.
The indigenous nature of SAMAR underscores Indiaโs strides toward self-reliance in defence production and its ability to harness domestic expertise to develop cutting-edge military technologies.
The unveiling of SAMAR at the Aero India 2023 defence exhibition marked a significant milestone, offering a glimpse into Indiaโs burgeoning air defence capabilities. With the successful completion of SAMAR Firing Units (FUs) fabrication in 2023, as highlighted in the MoDโs 2023 year-end report, the Indian Air Force has achieved notable progress in its efforts to indigenize critical defence systems.
As India continues to modernize its armed forces and enhance its defensive capabilities, the successful test-firing of SAMAR during Exercise โVayu Shakti-24โฒ underscores the nationโs resolve to safeguard its airspace and respond effectively to emerging security challenges.
With SAMAR poised to play a pivotal role in Indiaโs air defence strategy, the Indian Air Force reaffirms its commitment to protecting the nationโs sovereignty and territorial integrity.
