In a momentous ceremony held at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, 41 nursing cadets were commissioned as Lieutenants into the Military Nursing Service (MNS). The grand event unfolded at the Capt Devashish Sharma Kirti Chakra Parade Ground, named in honor of a valiant Army Medical Corps officer posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra in 1995 for his bravery in Jammu & Kashmir.
Presiding over the commissioning ceremony was Lt Gen Pankaj P Rao, Director and Commandant of AFMC, who reviewed the parade and delivered a keynote address. Dressed in immaculate uniforms, the cadets marched with precision under a ceremonial archway adorned with the AFMC insignia, with the national flag and military banners framing the scene.
The ceremony was graced by a host of dignitaries, military veterans, faculty members, and the proud families of the cadets. As part of their formal induction, the newly commissioned officers took the ‘Oath of Affirmation,’ pledging unwavering commitment to their duties in service of the nation. Recognition for academic and professional excellence was awarded to several outstanding cadets during the event.
A group photograph taken in front of the iconic AFMC building symbolized the unity and preparedness of the new Lieutenants as they embarked on their journey within the Indian Armed Forces. Lt Gen Rao, a seasoned veteran with over 38 years of service, praised the cadets for their resilience and rigorous training. He emphasized the vital contributions of the MNS in delivering healthcare across diverse and often challenging operational environments, reinforcing the ethos of “Duty with Dignity.”
Highlighting the rich legacy of the Military Nursing Service, Lt Gen Rao recalled its origins dating back to 1888 during British colonial rule. He noted the historic milestone in 1950 when women were first granted commissioned officer ranks in independent India. The ceremony also served as a powerful tribute to the enduring role of women in uniform, who have steadfastly supported the Indian Army’s medical corps for over a century.
The AFMC, renowned as a center of excellence in medical education, continues to be instrumental in shaping the future of nursing and healthcare in the armed forces. The commissioning ceremony stood as a testament to the dedication, discipline, and distinguished legacy of the Military Nursing Service.
