General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff, engaged in a high-level interaction with newly appointed Command Subedar Majors at the Directorate General of Military Operations earlier this week. The meeting focused on enhancing troop welfare, strengthening unit cohesion, and promoting robust leadership at the grassroots level.
The Command Subedar Major serves as a critical bridge between officers and soldiers. General Dwivedi highlighted the importance of shared accountability and frontline leadership in building a resilient fighting force. He urged the Subedar Majors to play an active role in mentoring troops, supporting their well-being, and maintaining operational morale—especially in light of lessons learned from the recent conflicts.

Since taking over as Army Chief on June 30, 2024, General Dwivedi has championed modernization and self-reliance. Under his leadership, the Army has accelerated its Atmanirbhar Bharat goals, with 75% of the 2024 defense capital budget earmarked for domestic procurement—up from 68% in 2022–23. As former Northern Army Commander, he played a pivotal role in upgrading capabilities using indigenous technologies.
The Indian Army’s Welfare Directorate continues to complement these initiatives through targeted welfare schemes and CSR collaborations, reinforcing the Army’s commitment to a holistic support system for its personnel.
This interaction with Command Subedar Majors marks another milestone in the Army’s ongoing efforts to ensure readiness, resilience, and a soldier-first approach in the face of evolving operational challenges.
