10 Common SSB Interview Conference Mistakes You Should Avoid Making

0
10 COMMON SSB INTERVIEW CONFERENCE MISTAKES

Conference is the last day of SSB where all the three assessors share the findings about a candidate. The IO, Psych and GTO then discuss whether to recommend a candidate or not. Mostly, the candidate who is clearly in or who is clearly out has a conference of a very short duration. Typically, a borderline candidate has a conference of a longer duration.

There is nothing extra a candidate could perform in the conference that will earn him brownie points, except for being careful in whatever he is doing and answering during conference.

Note: The answers given below are the sample answers, you may answer based on your perspective and knowledge.

Here are some mistakes that candidates tend to make in the interview. Please avoid these:

  1. Suggesting corrections to the board:

When a candidate is asked whether he has any suggestions for the board, the common answer is no. But still, some candidates tend to suggest corrections to the board like there were a lot of mosquitoes, food was not good enough, etc. This is not good manners considering that you were there for having, having food and games for free. If you really have a better suggestions which save the time and money of the board and also make the process smooth, do share it with them, do not give suggestions just for the sake of it.

  1. Complaining about the laundry service or on the support staff:

Be it the CHM who help the assessors or the washerman who washes your clothes. Be officer enough to deal with them yourself.

  1. Looking back:

Although this is not very common, but this should be avoided at all costs. In some SSBs, there is a display screen at the candidate’s back where his marks are displayed. Even though you know it, a candidate must avoid it at all costs because this could be a serious issue otherwise.

  1. Greeting everyone:

When a candidate enters the conference room, he finds many officers in uniforms sitting in front of him. As soon as the candidate enters the conference room, he is required to wish only the senior-most officer, who is the president of the board. He is not required to greet remaining officers. This is briefed before the start of conference by the CHM.

  1. Getting too free with the CHM:

In a typical repeater group, there are many candidates who are academy dropouts, who were previously recommended, NCC cadets or wards of defence personnel who has seen military life. What’s wrong with them is that they treat the NCOs as their friends in the way they talk or communicate with them. This is not specific to conference but can be seen that time and at the time of reporting as they interact to the group as a whole at that time only.

Current Affairs eBooks
  1. Going in casually dressed attire:

Most of the times, there is a mentality in the candidates’ mind that while it is the last day and nothing is to be assessed, let’s just not dress up perfectly. This is displayed in their casualness in not ironing clothes, wearing white socks in black shoes, not tying tie correctly, etc. Although it doesn’t matter a lot, but sure needs to be taken care of.

  1. Trying to ask candidates what happened in their conference:

Every candidate is assessed based on his/her capability and qualities. So, don’t be very eager as to what was asked to a candidate who went before you. Just keep calm and keep kaam se kaam.

  1. Taking too much time:

Conference is the procedure in which the assessors are to cross checking their findings and deciding whether to recommend a candidate or not. So make sure you do not take up too much time thanking them/giving them suggestions or asking for suggestions. This too is not very common, but there are candidates who ask the assessors review on them.

  1. Not preparing the questions asked in interview:

This could again be a deciding factor if you are a borderline case. When in the interview, if you do not know anything, just say “I don’t know sir, I will find out”. And be ready to answer those questions in the conference.

  1. Don’t brainstorm on what is going on inside the room:

This is the most common mistake candidates make before conference. Do not think too much about what is going on inside the conference room. What happens inside is least of your concerns. Instead, you must focus on your performance and your conduct at the conference.

Conclusion

Conference is of little consequence for a candidate because the assessment stage is already over. However, candidates must make sure that they do not commit these mistakes during their conference. The josh must be as high as it was during the screening–in time. That will bring out the liveliness in you.

20 Tricky Current Affairs Questions In SSB Interview

0
CURRENT AFFAIRS QUESTIONS FOR SSB

If you good at answering current affairs question during your personal interview, it surely adds more points in your SSB mark sheet, all the defence aspirants must read day to day happenings around the world and keep themselves aware of what is going on in their surroundings, you can not simply neglect such questions just by saying that you are not interested in news, politics etc etc. In SSB, assessors are assessing the personality of a candidate through various techniques. Though the IO might ask one question, he would be looking for a certain quality through that question. Many such questions are asked to candidates, which they feel is irrelevant and become casual in their approach to answering that.

Here we bring you 20 such tricky questions you might be asked in your upcoming SSB Interview. Be careful while answering them and be very logical and reasonable in your responses:

Note: The answers given below are the sample answers, you may answer based on your perspective and knowledge.

  1. Do you think Rohingya refugees be allowed to take shelter in India? Why/Why not?

Yes sir, they should be allowed on humanitarian grounds but should be kept on probation until proven loyal to this country.

  1. What do you think should be done to resolve Kashmir issue?

The solution to Kashmir demands more of administrative interference than military powers. There should be more strict vigilance on cross-borders passages and education should be made compulsory for every Kashmiri under 25 in Indian schools/colleges.

  1. What are your opinions on President Trump’s wall plan at Mexico and US border? Do you think similar idea could be adopted at the LoC?

It is a very childish idea considering the cost, manpower and maintenance involved. Practically it will be impossible to construct a wall at the hilly areas of the LoC. At the LoC, our soldiers have been our walls for a long time and will continue to do so for their motherland.

  1. Don’t you think India should also legalize recreational use of marijuana, just like Canada did recently?

Sir, medically marijuana has benefits that could cure certain ailments. It should only be administered to patients admitted in the hospitals under medical supervisor. If made common, then it would lead to its exploitation.

  1. What are your views on the US banning immigration to certain section of people?

I personally feel that this is not a good idea. Just because a few people from that section are causing nuisance, does not mean the whole sect has to suffer from it. It shows their inability to control the situation and handle it.

  1. What could be done to eradicate global terrorism?

Whole world should unite against terrorism, irrespective of language, culture, region, religion, etc. There should be an anti-terror organization like the UN Peacekeeping force which exclusively fights terrorism.

  1. What are your views on live-in relationships as in recent case of Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu?

In the view of our culture, I personally feel live-in relationships are good for our society, though, it widely depends on mutual consent of both partners and their families. We might be ‘open minded’ on a personal level, but at the social level, we are still Indians and we are not yet there.

  1. What could be done to solve global hunger crisis as it is rising day by day?

Unfortunately, there is not enough awareness about global hunger among general public today. The first step in this regard is to create awareness among people. Individuals, companies and groups who waste food must be fined.

  1. Don’t you think US did a right thing pulling itself out of the UN Human Rights Council? It will save it millions in aid.

From US point of view, it was correct. From everyone else’s point of view, US is just being an arrogant bully who wants everything they say, to be done. If the US felt that the UNHRC is a self-serving organization, then why did no other country shared the same thoughts?

  1. According to you, what should be North Korea’s stand on the possession of nukes, given the sanctions and bans on that country?

I strongly feel that a country has all the rights to do everything in their control to step up their defences. We cannot say a country – “you leave your country defence-less, we will not do anything to you.” If that were so, then there would have been no armies in the world. Unless one stands up for themselves, no one will stand up for them. Only strength respects strength.

  1. What should be India’s stand on tackling China for getting permanent seat at UN security council?

India has a huge support of most of the countries for a permanent seat, except for countries including China and Pakistan. China’s ‘yes’ matter because it is holding a permanent seat in the UNSC. Diplomatic channels should be improved between India and China.

  1. With the recent triple-talaq ban, withdrawal of Hajj subsidy and banning cow sales, what are your views on the actions of current government towards minorities?

I feel it is a very controversial issue. However, I support the decisions that the government make because it is already thought over by dozens of people. Still if there is something that needs to be addressed, one can always move to the supreme court.

  1. What are your views on the Sahayak system in the Indian Amy?

Soldiers are recruited in the army to fight wars, not to help with officers’ wives’ daily chores. I feel that the Sahayak system should be abolished in the army, taking example of Air Force and Navy.

  1. Should women be allowed in combat roles, considering men are stronger than women and men would see this as a slap on their manhood?
CURRENT AFFAIRS QUESTIONS FOR SSB

In today’s world, we are more open to giving equal opportunities to women. But with equal rights, come equal responsibilities. And if women are ready to take up these responsibilities without any conditions, then they should definitely be allowed in combat roles.

  1. Don’t you think India should stop giving pensions to retired soldiers and invest that money in modernizing instead?

Sir, India is the largest voluntary army. One of the reason being – pension after retirement. The government could also impose compulsory military service for everyone aged 18-20, in-line with the Israeli system. But we are a huge country with a large cultural differences. It will be practically impossible to do so in this case. Also, if pension is withdrawn, Army might lose its numbers. Instead, focus should be on indigenous development of weapons with transfer of technology.

  1. Should caste system be continued to give more opportunities to poor and economically backward people?

Caste system gives equal opportunities to under privileged section of the society. I fell that the caste system should be there only until the graduation of a reserved person. Thereafter, it is fair competition among everyone and everyone should be treated as general.

  1. Being a Hindu/Muslim, what are your views on Babri Masjid-Ayodhya issue?

I feel that it is much of a political issue than that of a religious one. As a Muslim, I feel Muslims have many holy places around the world but for Hindus, there is only one Ram janmbhoomi. I feel Muslims should support making of Ram mandir in Ayodhya and spread the message of communal harmony.

  1. What do you think is the impact of Brexit on India?

After losing access to EU single market, the UK would want to develop trade relations with emerging markets from around the world. India, with its strong economic fundamentals and a large domestic market, is in a better negotiating position. India’s high proportion of skilled working-age population and high growth rate will be of particular interest for the UK.

  1. What are your views on premarital sex in India?

Sex before marriage is something that our society and culture disapprove of. Again, it solely depends on the mutual consent of the partners, but in a general term, it is not acceptable in Indian society.

  1. Don’t you think the law gives more power to women over men? What could be done to resolve it?

The law does give more power to women in terms of gender specific laws. It is time that we start identifying crimes as crimes irrespective of gender, religion and caste. For example, if there is a law that protects women from rape, there should also be a law that protects men from rape.

Conclusion

The question might come from any angle, for example, by asking your daily routine, the IO is looking for what responsibilities you take as a member of your home or how you manage and organize your time throughout the day. For another instance, the IO might ask you to give solutions to resolve Rohingya Muslim crisis, which will bring out your secularism and your views on that religion, people and nationality. Be reasonable in each of your response.

Joining Indian Military Academy – AIR 53

Joining Indian Military Academy AIR 53

It’s been always my dream to motivate people through my success story and fortunately with the grace of God, here I am writing my story for all defence aspirants. Hello guys, my name is ANKUSH SINGH TOMAR and My story contains two important phases of my life. The 1st phase started when I was in my 12th class and  I decided to make my future with Indian defence services so I took two exams of INDIAN AIR FORCE called Group-X and Group-Y. I cleared both of them and got my joining letter after some time. That was the very crucial time of my life. I had two choices —— 1st —- join X or Y Group and the ——-2nd —– continue my studies.

Someone has rightly said that ” sometimes your whole life boils down to one insane move ”
Well, I made that insane move and decided neither to join X group nor Y. I continued my studies. Almost Everyone told me to join X group or Y Group for a safe future but I had something special for myself, for my family and for my parents in my relentless mind.

The second phase of my life started in Feb –  2017 when I decided to write  CDS exam for the first time and cleared it. I was allotted selection center east, Allahabad for my SSB. it was my first encounter with the SSB and unfortunately, I was conference out.
Well it was a very big defeat but I was not really worried about it coz I always believe that your first step towards success can be your biggest defeat. So don’t worry, rise and learn from your defeat it can be your life changing the experience. I also learned a lot from it and again in Nov 2017,  I took CDS 2 and cleared it also. The SSB venue was same (Allahabad) and my dates were 7-11 March. So my dream run started on 5th of March when I set off from my home after taking blessings of my mother.Join Indian Military Academy - AIR 53

I reached Allahabad on 6th March and reported at MCO. From there we all (about 140 students) were taken to the selection center with our luggage loaded on a truck.
After we reached there we were divided into two groups of 70 students each and our group was allotted 11 SSB board, the same I got last time.
We were given chest nos according to fresher and Repeater and after a brief documents check, we came back to our board.

The next day was the screening test. We all were escorted to Capt. Vikram Batra hall, where the OIR test was conducted. Very simple test and almost everyone does wonders in it,  So no need to talk much about it.

After this, it was time for PPDT.
A hazy picture of a man standing in water was shown to us and I managed to make a simple and positive story.
Then we were divided  in the groups of 15 – 15 and made to sit and discuss. After a healthy discussion for 20 minutes, our group came up with a common story, which was not my story ( but you don’t need to worry about it that your story must be the group story, just participate in the GD and narrate your story properly it’s enough).
In the afternoon our result was announced. 26 out of 70 made it to the next stage and I was 25th, the second last. In the evening we filled our PIQ form and came back to our board.
My group had 10 students, the 10 repeaters, the most unexpected and very hard to understand creatures in the history of SSB including me.
The next day was our psychology test, a series of tests like TAT, WAT, SRT and SD. Well, I’d like to give you some advice about it, try to write simple and genuine stories based on real and actual problems. Just find a need in the picture, put yourself in and solve it. Again Don’t spend your time in describing the problem, spend it in solving the problem.
How do you solve the problem? That matters nothing else.

My test was good. I wrote good stories in TAT, 60 sentences in WAT, 40 SRT and my SD .
The next day was our GTO. The GTO started with group discussion on two topics 20 mins each. I spoke 3- 4 times on the first topic and 3-4 times on the second. So I participated in the GD and gave some ideas on the topic.
Well in GD, DON’T counter anyone, just give your ideas and put a smile on your face while listening to others …
The next test was GPE and in this test also I was able to solve all the problems in the best ways possible. My solution was also the group solution.
The 3rd test was PGT  and in this test the repeaters showed their true colours. Nobody was listening to anybody. everyone was busy in giving their own solutions. But amid all this chaos, I was silently giving my solutions. I request you too that if you have an idea in PGT, just give it and help others. One more thing, if you find someone giving too many ideas and acting like a group leader, make him busy by giving him a plank, rope or load and lead the group yourself.
The 4th test was HGT, same as PGT. Your group will be half this time so make sure you perform well in this test …
The fifth and sixth test check your physical stamina, they are GOR and INDIVIDUAL OBSTACLES. Well, I did 13 individual obstacles and also performed well in the GOR.
The next day was our GTO-2 and it started with lecturette. My topic was Indo-China relations and believe me I just nailed it.
After lecturette, it was the time for the most important test of the entire GTO series THE COMMAND TASK.
I solved my command task within time and later on my subordinates ( both got the recommendation with me ) told me that the level of difficulties was high as compared to others. So I was happy to perform well in this too.

The last task was FGT and I gave some ideas about this too. So the entire GTO series was a success for me.
On the same day, just after the GTO, I  was called for my interview. I was in the same GTO dress. My interview went for almost an hour and the IO asked me everything about my education, family, friends, my weakness, strength, my hobbies, participation in social activities, History of my hometown and also hthe istory of Allahabad. He also asked me some gk questions like a full form of PNR & SIM, some questions about cricket as it was my hobby. I gave answers to almost every question. After my interview, I was pretty sure about my selection.

The next and the final day was our conference day and to be honest I was really nervous. My conference went for 2-3 mins and I was asked some general questions by the president like the quality of food and any suggestions to improve anything etc …
After our conference, we were made to sit in a hall and after some time, one Officer with our result came in. He immediately started calling the chest numbers of the recommended candidates. The first one was chest no 25, which was mine. After hearing those magical words I was in a pleasant shock and it took me 15 mins to recover from that condition. That situation is hard to explain. I never felt like that before. With tears in my eyes, I was thanking God,  remembering my parents and saying to myself  ” yes !!!  I’ve done it and it’s not a dream ”

So this is my story. I’d like to tell you that if you fail, Don’t stop…. be focused on your aim ……. Sacrifice your comforts coz without Sacrifice there can be no victory. In the end  BEST OF LUCK TO ALL FUTURE OFFICERS OF INDIA. You guys are special coz you’ve chosen INDIAN Defence services and one day you will definitely make your country proud.

Piles/Hemorrhoids SSB Medical Rejection and Cure

5
PILES SSB MEDICAL REJECTION AND CURE

After a candidate is recommended from one of the selection boards, he/she has to undergo medical check-up. One of the check-up is surgical checkup in which cases like carrying angle, flat foot, knock knees, etc is checked. One of such tests are the Piles or Hemorrhoids test.

How do officers at SSB medical check for piles in a candidate?

  1. On surgical days, the doctor will be checking medical candidates for piles and fissures.
  2. Candidate will be naked in front of the medical officer during the surgical examination.
  3. The candidate is asked to bend forward and to pull his ‘ butt cheeks’.
  4. The surgical doctor will ask a candidate to bend down and using a torch, will physically check-up the anus region for piles.
  5. If the problem is deducted, the candidates get the TR (Temporary Rejection). This is one of the reasons candidates get medically rejected in the SSBs.

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids occur when veins in the anus swell and expand. As a result, it can be very painful when sitting or passing a stool. It is common among people who suffer from long-term constipation or diarrhea.

Clearing the confusion

Some people who have anal bleeding think they have piles while it could just be fissures caused by hard stools. The vice versa also stands true – while a person has piles, initially, it is common to think that he/she might be having fissures.

In some rare cases among women, the bleeding is sometimes confused to be from the menstrual cycle during the periods, though the pain persists throughout the month.Piles ssb medical

Stages of piles

Piles are of two types – internal and external. Internal piles occur inside the anus and external piles on the outer area of the anus. Most commonly, both types of piles occur simultaneously.

There are 4 stages of piles – 1st stage piles develop inside the anus; 2nd stage piles project outside the anus during bowel movement but return inwards afterwards; 3rd stage is similar to 2nd stage, only that they return inside only when physically pushed in; 4th stage is a more serious permanent condition where it hangs permanently outside the anus.

Reason for rejection

  • For obvious reasons, candidates having piles will not be able to undergo training as effectively as a cadet should be, affecting his/her daily routine.
  • In worst cases, the bleeding could actually be a sign of bowel cancer, so, the forces do not take a chance on the candidate and reject him/her in the first place.

Prevention & Cure

  • Piles can be prevented by eating fibre-rich food and plenty of fruits and liquids.
  • Having proper bowel routines is necessary to keep piles in check. You should be going to the restroom at-least once daily. Exercise regularly and try to avoid too much sitting in one place.
  • Laser surgery or infra-red surgery is one of the cures to piles. It takes about 1 month for recovery. Rubber-band technique is also a useful technique where a rubber band is tightened on the projected vessels, cutting off the blood supply and it falls off in about a week.
  • Kindly consult a doctor if you are facing this problem.

Indian Army Major’s Wife killed, Another Major Suspect

0
INDIAN ARMY MAJOR'S WIFE KILLED

In a major development, the police detained Indian Army Major Nikhil Handa for the murder of Shailja Dwivedi, wife of another Indian Army Major who was found dead with her throat slit.  Major Handa, who’s a friend of the couple, was held in Meerut and has been detained for questioning. He was posted in Dimapur and was the last person to be seen with Shailja inside the hospital.

Cops are also investigating the role of a silver-coloured Honda City, which the 35-year-old victim was last seen boarding.

Shailja was found dead on Saturday in southwest Delhi, close to the cantonment area. The 30-year-old woman’s body was found in Brar Square area and later identified by her husband.

Initially presumed to be an accident case, the police quickly registered a case of homicide.

According to media reports, the woman had left home at 10 am for a physiotherapy session at the base hospital in Delhi Cantonment. She was found dead half an hour later.

An official vehicle, which has been assigned to her husband, dropped her outside the hospital. When the driver went to pick her up, he was told that the Major ‘s wife had not turned up for the physiotherapy session.

Later, the police were informed by local people about a body on the road with the throat slit. The woman’s husband was informed about the incident by the police said.

Source: TOI The wife of an Indian Army Major was found with her throat slit on a road near Delhi Cantonment metro station in west Delhi on Saturday afternoon. The body of Shailja Dwivedi (35) had also been run over by a car several times.

Police sources said their prime suspect is a major in the Army. He was a common friend of the couple and is believed to have had a falling out with them over an undisclosed reason. He is untraceable and his mobile is switched off.

Joint commissioner Madhup Tiwari said the police had strong leads. “The initial information was that of an accident but our probe has indicated homicide,” he said.

As per the sequence of events pieced together by the police, Shailja had left home around 10 am in an army vehicle for Base hospital where she had to attend her physiotherapy session. When the driver went to pick her up later, he was informed that she did not attend the session. He went back to her residence in Parade Ground area and informed her husband, Major Amit Dwivedi, who began a search.

At 1.28pm, a passerby spotted a woman’s body lying on a road in Brar Square and called the police. The body remained unidentified for a few hours. Around 4.30pm, Lt Colonel Amit Dwivedi reached Naraina police station to lodge a complaint about his missing wife. He later identified the body as his wife.

Police said it appeared that Shailja got dropped off at the hospital but did not go inside and boarded another vehicle. It appears that she was taken somewhere by a person known to her and killed, perhaps in a vehicle.shelja diwedi 1 2 shelja diwedi 1

The killer may have mowed her down either by reversing the car on her or hitting her head-on.

Shailja’s call details are being examined to ascertain if she was being harassed or stalked. The victim’s husband was currently posted in 11, Jaklies Unit in Nagaland and she was living with her six-year-old son.

They had come to Delhi two months ago and were to leave for a deputation to Sudan for a United Nations mission in a couple of weeks. Cops said that she had met the suspect, who was seen on CCTV footage near the hospital, in Nagaland.

Meet Aanchal Gangwal AFCAT Flying Branch

Aanchal Gangwal AFCAT Flying Branch AIR - 1

Aanchal Gangwal cleared the AFCAT exam and AFSB interview for the flying branch  in the AFCAT entry for the IAF flying branch. Aanchal Gangwal was among the 22 selected from all over the country and the only one from Madhya Pradesh. Aanchal Gangwal, 24, has been selected for the Indian Air Force’s flying branch. She is a daughter of a tea seller, but that never came in the way of Aanchal Gangwal’s dream of soaring in the skies. This girl from Neemuch district in north-western part of Madhya Pradesh has been selected in the flying branch of the Indian Air Force (IAF), and her dream is to fly fighter planes.

It was sheer determination and belief in herself that made her stick to her dreams of joining the Indian armed forces. “When I was in class 12, there were floods in Uttarakhand and I was impressed with the way the armed forces rescued the flood affected and decided to join the forces, but the family condition was not conducive at that time.” Aanchal said.Aanchal Gangwal Indian Air Force

But she never gave up her dream. A product of Metro H S School in Neemuch, she stands at an impressive 5 foot seven inch. She was the school captain, topper in her class. She won a scholarship and went to Vikram University, Ujjain where she was part of the basketball team and also 400 m race. “I always knew that I had it in me to make it,” she said.Aanchal Gangwal AFCAT Flying Branch AIR - 1

Meanwhile, she was looking for a job and started appearing for competitive exams. She cleared the police sub-inspector’s exam and even joined the training, but she realized that the tough schedule would never allow her to prepare for her dream job. “Fortunately, the results of labour inspector exam also came at that time. Here the schedule was easier and I got chance to prepare,” Aanchal said.

But clearing the AFCAT Air Force Common Admission Test was not easy. Over the years she faced the interview board five times and was only successful the sixth time, whose results were declared on June 7 2018. She was among the 22 selected from all over the country and the only one from Madhya Pradesh. Five of those selected are girls. Over 6 lakh students appeared for the exam.

She has been receiving congratulatory messages from all over ever since her selection. In a message on Twitter, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had congratulated her. A few days ago woman and child development minister Archana Chitnis visited her home and greeted her.

Her father, Suresh Gangwal who runs a tea stall at the Neemuch bus stand stands a proud man today, but stood behind her daughter’s dream. “Now everyone in the area knows about my “Namdev tea stall” and I feel very happy when people come and congratulate me.”

Suresh never allowed financial condition to come in the way of his three children’s education. “I took a loan to send Aachal for coaching in Indore and also financed my elder son’s engineering. My youngest daughter is in Class 12.” Aachal goes for a year’s training in Hyderabad from June 30, and on completion, her dream to fly high will come true.

Recommended For Indian Army and Airforce – My SSB Story

0

I was recommended by Indian Army in my first attempt followed by my recommendation in Indian Airforce in my next attempt. I was merit out in both of my endeavours, but I really wanted to share my experience with others since I do not come from any army background plus had not gone through any kind of ssb training. Both my SSB attempts date back to 2014. It took me quite some time to finally come up and share my experience, but I would be really happy if you could share it with others through your social media presence.

Hi everyone, the only reason I am sharing my story with you all is because I feel somewhere or other many of you will be able to relate your life story to mine.

I was born and brought up in a small city of Rajasthan, Bikaner. I will briefly share with you, what I really feel helped me during my SSB.

I had no armed forces background in my family, but what really helped in SSB me was the right amount of confidence and positive attitude. I remember I was working with one of the top IT firms of India in Mysore when one day I got a call for SSB (CDSE-Non Tech entry). Knowing my centre was Allahabad, I requested for a change of my SSB centre to Bengaluru since there was no direct train to Allahabad. I wrote to the SSB headquarters over mail and fax that I need to get my centre change.

Having no hopes, One fine day, at 9 pm in the night I got a mail from SSB that my centre was changed to Bangalore and I had to report early morning tomorrow to the station.

I left for Bangalore without knowing what exactly I had to in SSB. I had zero idea about the tasks that I have to do there. I personally feel , being raw and having no prior training really helped me get through. I had no pre-assumptions in my mind, everything that I did there came right through my heart.

The only preparation I did was going through all the online articles I could find related to SSB procedure, candidate stories, their experience in that 3-hour train journey from Mysore to Bengaluru.

All I aimed for, out of my first SSB was a great experience and a chance to at least get screened in, so that I get to stay there for next 5 days.

PIQ Form- Everything starts with Personal Information form. Not many people take it seriously but believe me, It is THE second most important thing in SSB, first is obviously food :P. Write down each and every detail about you in that form with utmost honesty. This form will be your first impression and it better be impressive. Write down all the achievements you have gained, throughout your life, be it small or big. Try to cover all areas of your life (sports, literature, arts, and academics). This will show your versatility.

Personally, I had a lot of things to write down since, I am a black belt holder in martial arts, won medals at state and national events. I was into NCC for 5 years and had ‘A’ ‘B’ & ‘C’ certificates. I had served as an under officer for my platoon. I also mentioned about my good academic record, being an office bearer in school, getting district level recognition in Arts. I mentioned it all.

OIR & PPDTOIR exam is going to be a very easy one with questions related to basic maths and logical reasoning. Don’t panic. Don’t stick to one question for long. Try to fill the answers before time.

Coming to PPDT, 1 hazy picture will be shown to you on a projector and you have to create a story out of it. What everybody will tell you is that it has to be a positive story with one of the characters doing some kind of heroic thing, which is all true. But try to relate every picture with some kind of personal experience that you ever had. Things did not necessarily happen to you, may be with your friends or in your neighbourhood. The more genuine your story is, the better you will be able to express it and faster you will be able to write it. I remember when I wrote all those stories and looked back in my answer sheet, I was surprised, how unintentionally I had written a lot of my personal experiences in form of a story. In the last blank slide, I had created a story which revolved around a girl who wanted to get through armed forces and was waiting for her call letter and her mother being her true support, basically again related to my personal experience.RECOMMENDED FOR INDIAN ARMY & AIRFORCE

Group Discussion– You are going to have a series of GD in your 5 days stay at SSB. One will be just after your PPDT test. According to me, Key to every GD would be keeping your arguments crisp and to the point. While narrating your story, look at each of your fellow candidates and tell your story with confidence. Do not look at the panel sitting in front of you. In between discussions, look for a pause or I would say, correct moment, Keep your argument ready in mind and then shoot. Trust me it all a myth that one who initiates the GD gets an extra benefit.

Psychological Tests– I consider these as the most easy tests in SSB. All you have to do is write down whatever comes in your mind. Do not try to deliberately write something which doesn’t define you or your behaviour, just to impress the panel. I remember during the PPDT, when they show you 12 hazy pictures (including one blank slide) I wrote all those stories and looked back in my answer sheet, I was surprised, how unintentionally I had written a lot of my personal experiences in form of a story. In the last blank slide, I had created a story which revolved around a girl who wanted to get through armed forces and was waiting for her call letter and her mother being her true support, basically again related to my personal experience.

1). Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

2). Word Association Test (WAT)

3). Situation Reaction Test (SRT)

4). Self-Description Test (SDT)

SSB interview

Group Tasks– These will be held for 2 days including no. of different tests. Don’t lose your calm, try to show your team spirit wherever possible. Remember, it is not a one-man show that will take you places in defence. It is and will always be how good a team player you are. Another important thing that comes to test in these tasks is your bonding with fellow candidates. Gel with them and create a rapport that whenever they need someone for help, your name should be the first to cross their mind.

I will not go into detail about each task because seriously it doesn’t matter. Just keep your ears open while the GTO gives you an overview of the tasks and be focussed. Also, these tasks will test your stamina so you got to be physically strong. Prepare accordingly.

In Individual obstacles task, there is just one mantra, never give up! If you are not able to cross one, move to next. Do not wait. If time permits come back to the ones that were difficult for you to cross and give another attempt, but only if time permits.

Personal Interview– I remember how excited I was about this. We hear so many interesting stories from different candidates about their interviews. Preparation wise, you need to be aware about current national and international issues. Whatever topic you talk about, you should know in and out about it. Rest, try to be honest with your interviewer and do not try to fake anything.

You might be asked about the place you belong to, about your best friends, about your fellow SSB mates, your strengths, and your weakness. Basically all about you. Do one thing, while you will be there in SSB without your phone, you will get ample of time to be with yourself. Take a pen and paper and recall all your life experiences (good and bad) and try to write things that define you. You will get your answers. That’s what I did.

It was tough to tell you about such a fantastic experience in a nutshell, but hope I did justice.

Note– I was merit out due to the scarcity of seats for women in defence but my SSB marks were 99 (more than what the AIR-1 had scored).

Remember-Don’t let anyone or anything stop you from chasing your dreams. All the Best!

What Is The Difference Between CAPF, Military And Paramilitary?

1
Coast Guard Officers Cover

Many times people confuse the military with the paramilitary. Over the years, the defence forces have evolved a mechanism that takes care of the families of martyrs. This is not so for the paramilitary forces and there is a stir recently from the families of paramilitary forces to address this issue.

So, what exactly is the difference between the military, paramilitary and the central armed police forces?

Broadly speaking, the defence forces (also called the military) consists of a country’s Army, Navy and Air Force. The central armed police forces are BSF, CRPF, ITBP, CISF and SSB. The paramilitary forces are Coast Guard, Assam Rifles and Special Frontier Force (and other forces like NSG, RR).

Each force is regulated & each service has its own budget. Let’s see each one of them in detail.

Military

A military or defence force is a professional organization formally authorized by the country to use lethal or deadly force and weapons to support the interests of the state. Although it is called defence forces in India, but its actions are both defensive and offensive.

It typically consists of an Army, Navy, Air Force and the Coast Guard.

Paramilitary Forces

As per international usage, any force which has officers of the military managing it but it comes under the control of MHA is a Paramilitary. By definition only the Indian Coast Guard, Assam Rifles and the Special Frontier Forces fall into this.

The Paramilitary forces in India also constitute State Reserve Police Forces. They need special provisions of law to operate in aid of Civil Authorities, similar to the Armed Forces. Since they do not have police powers, they can operate only once the State Government declares an area as disturbed.

Central Armed Police Forces

Central Armed Police Forces police functions on the borders to check illegal border crossings, encroachments, smuggling etc (BSF, SSB, ITBP), internal security duties (CRPF) or installation security (CISF).

There are 5 CAPFs in India – Border Security Force, Shashastra Seema Bal, Indo-Tibetian Border Force, Central Reserve Police Force and Central Industrial Security Force.

CAPF consists of these 5 services
CAPF consists of these 5 services

The Coast Guard Ambiguity

Although the coast guard is a paramilitary force and its bills are paid by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Defence manages it.

It is primarily due to the reasons like the machinery used by the coast guard is much alike the machinery used by the Navy and CG needs someone experienced to handle it.

Coast Guard Officers
Coast Guard Officers

Also, the training to the coast guard personnel is imparted by the military institutions like the INA and AFA. This is the reason that a senior naval officer manages the functioning of coast guard and it has the same selection process as that of the military officers.

Conclusion

Military – Army, Navy and Air Force (managed and headed by MoD officers)

Paramilitary – Assam Rifles, Special Frontier Force and Coast Guard (managed by MHA, headed by MoD officers)

Central Armed Police Force – BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITB and SSB (managed and headed by MHA/IPS officers)
