The Incident
These Indian seafarers have been stranded due to Cyclone Mekunu which hit that area a few days back. The Indian Nationals were stranded for nearly ten days after severe devastation of the area.
Three Indian vessels at Socotra suffered damages/sank alongside in the harbour and another Dhow, MSV Safina Al Khijar with 12 Indians onboard is reported to be missing.
INS Sunayna was diverted from Gulf of Aden deployment in Arabian Sea to Socotra Island for search and rescue operations after Indian Navy received a distress call from Directorate General of Shipping and Indian Sailing Vessels Association.
The 38 Indian nationals were successfully rescued and evacuated in the early morning of 3rd June 2018. All evacuees were safely embarked onboard the ship and were immediately provided with medical care, food, water and telephone facilities. The indigenously designed and developed Dhanush ATAG is ready for induction into the Indian army. The 155-millimeter/45-caliber towed howitzer completed the final development trials at the Indian military’s test range at Pokhran.
6 Dhanush guns were tested in battery formation (at one go and at one target) from June 2 to 6 firing fifty rounds each.
About Dhanush
Dhanush is a 155mm x 45mm calibre artillery gun and is also called the “desi Bofors”.
It is an improved version of the FH-77B 155-millimeter/39 caliber towed howitzer manufactured by the Swedish defense contractor Bofors (now BAE Systems) of which India acquired 414 between 1987 and 1991.
Dhanush Howitzer During a Test
Dhanush vs Bofors
Dhanush’s larger caliber is the major upgrade from Bofors. Also, Dhanush has an effective range of 38 km as compared to 27 km range of the Bofors guns.
Besides features like electronic gun-laying and sighting systems, the indigenous gun’s hitting range is 11 km more than the imported Bofors guns.
Dhanush can also fire eight rounds per minute and needs a crew of six to eight artillerymen.
The Tests
The gun has passed tests under severe cold conditions and in hot and humid and in the deserts..
During an earlier trial in Pokhran a year ago, the muzzle and barrel of the howitzer exploded two times. However, the fault is likely to be with the shells and not the guns.
The gun has been developed by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), Kolkata, after going through design documents running into over 12,000 pages.
These documents were given to India as part of the first phase of “Transfer of Technology” (ToT) under the Bofors gun deal inked in the late 1980s.
The Indian Army has placed an initial order for 114 Dhanush howitzers out of a total of 414 units, with the first batch of guns to be manufactured at the Gun Carriage Factory in Jabalpur. Per-unit price of a Dhanush gun is a little over Rs 4.5 cr. One shell costs around Rs 1 lakh.
The India-Indonesia Co-Ordinated Patrol (CORPAT) was conducted from 24 – 02 June 2018 at Port Blair.
Participants
Indonesian Naval Ship KRI Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin (376) and Indonesian Maritime Patrol Aircraft arrived at Port Blair for the opening ceremony.
Indian Naval Ship Kulish and Indian Naval Maritime Patrol Aircraft Dornier participated in the exercise from India’s Andaman and Nicobar Command. INS Kulish was commanded by Commander Deepak Bali.
The Indian delegation was led by senior officer from Indian Navy, Commodore Ashutosh Ridhorkar, Naval Component Commander, Andaman and Nicobar Command.
Indian and Indonesian Delegation
History
The Indian Navy and Indonesian Navy have been carrying out coordinated patrols (CORPAT) twice a year since 2002. The CORPAT is also accompanied by a bilateral exercise at sea.
The 31st edition of the IND-INDO CORPAT commenced on 23rd May 2018 till 2nd June 2018. The closing ceremony was held between 2nd June to 9th June.
The Importance
Indian Naval assets have been increasingly deployed in recent times to address the main maritime concerns of the region as part of the Indian Government’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
This deployment contributed towards the Indian Navy’s efforts to consolidate inter-operability and forge strong bonds of friendship across the seas.
Activities
On completion of the Opening Ceremony, the ships and patrol aircraft of the two countries departed Port Blair and undertook patrolling on the respective sides of the 236 nautical mile long International Maritime Boundary Line.
During the stay in harbour, various activities such as official calls, formal reception on board ship, sporting fixture, ship open to visitors and professional interaction between naval personnel of both the nations have been planned.
Cultural Activities During CORPAT 2018
Future Prospects
The bilateral exercise with Indonesia was held after the conclusion of the Malabar trilateral naval war games between India, Japan and the U.S. Interestingly, two of the ships participating in Malabar will head to the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), the world’s largest multilateral exercise, hosted by the U.S. biennially off the Hawaii islands.
Conclusion
The visit of the Indian Naval Ship underscored India’s peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly countries towards ensuring good order in the maritime domain and to strengthen existing bonds between India and Indonesia.
India will join 25 other nations for the biennial military exercise – Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC). The exercise will be held from June 27 to August 2 near Hawaii.
About RIMPAC
The exercises occur every two years and are led by the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet. They are seen as a unique opportunity for Pacific Rim nations to cooperate as they train and work together to solve problems.
RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity designed to foster and sustain cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world’s interconnected oceans.
RIMPAC began in 1971 and was held annually until 1974, when it became a biennial exercise due to its large scale. The founding nations are the United States, Australia and Canada. This will be the 26th RIMPAC since inception.
RIMPAC 2018
RIMPAC 2018 contributes to the increased lethality, resiliency and agility needed by the joint and combined force to deter and defeat aggression by major powers across all domains and levels of conflict.
RIMPAC is known as the world’s largest international maritime exercise. This year, RIMPAC involves 47 surface ships, 5 submarines, 18 national land forces, and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel.
INS Sahyadri will sail from Malabar to participate and represent India in the multinational drill.
China Disinvited
China’s continued militarization of disputed features in the South China Sea only serve to raise tensions and destabilize the region. As an initial response to China’s continued militarization of the South China Sea, the US have disinvited the PLA Navy from the 2018 Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise.
Citing actions in the South China Sea that run counter to international norms and a pursuit of free and open seas, People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) was not invited in the exercise despite its participation in submarine safety and other non-warfighting components of the exercise in previous years.
Conclusion
The war games are being seen as a way of ensuring open access to important shipping lanes in Asia’s increasingly contested waters. The exercises are also a display of power — in the sense that participants are able to understand the technological capabilities of other participants — and thus perhaps act as a deterrent to further aggressive action.

19 years after his father was martyred in Kargil, Hitesh Kumar has been commissioned as a lieutenant in the Indian Army after passing out of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. Hitesh was only six years old when his father, a lance naik in the 2nd Battalion of Rajputana Rifles, was martyred at Tololing, in Kargil, on the night of June 12, 1999. On hearing the news of his father’s death, Hitesh vowed to join the Army.
Interestingly, Lt. Hitesh will be serving in the same battalion as his father, the report added.
“For 19 years, I dreamt of joining the Army. It became my mother’s dream too. Now I want to serve my country with pride and honesty,” said Hitesh.
“It has been a difficult life since Bachan was martyred. I dedicated my life to raising my two sons. Today I am proud that Hitesh was commissioned into the Army. His younger brother, Hemant, is also preparing to join the Army. There is nothing more I could ask for,” said a tearful Kamesh Bala, Hitesh’s mother.
“Bachan was a brave soldier. When our battalion was attacked at Tololing, he was shot in the head and died on the battlefield. We lost 17 soldiers that day, including Maj Vivek Gupta from Dehradun. I am glad Bachan’s son has received his commission. His father would have been proud of him,” said Rishipal Singh, who was in Bachan’s battalion.
Born on October 23, 1994, Lt Hitesh has a twin brother Hemant, a minute older than him, who is also preparing to join the Army. Sharing his 19-year-long journey to achieve his dreams, he says soon after his father’s martyrdom his mother put him in Rashtriya Military School at Chail in Himachal Pradesh.
A B.Com (Honours) from Delhi University’s prestigious Shri Ram College of Commerce, he had the option of joining the Faculty of Management and a high-flying corporate career.“But for me, life without being in the Army was unthinkable. I had decided that if I fail to do so I will join the paramilitary forces. After school, I cleared the NDA’s written exam but failed to clear the interview,” says Lt Hitesh. A keen sportsperson, he plays basketball and loves reading historical fiction and mythology.
