Captain Deepak Singh, an officer of the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals who was serving on deputation with the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, stands as a shining example of courage, leadership, and selfless service. At just 25 years of age, he made the supreme sacrifice on 14 August 2024 during a counter-insurgency operation in the dense forests of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir. For his extraordinary bravery and devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award.
Born in 1999 in the scenic Almora district of Uttarakhand, Captain Deepak Singh grew up in a disciplined and service-oriented environment. His father, Shri Mahesh Singh, served as a police officer, while his mother, Smt. Champa Singh, nurtured strong family values that emphasized duty, integrity, and patriotism. Alongside his two elder sisters, Manisha and Jyoti, Deepak was raised in a household where the idea of serving the nation was not just encouraged but deeply respected.
From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in academics as well as sports, particularly hockey, which helped shape his resilience, teamwork, and competitive spirit. Inspired by the uniform and the traditions of service associated with his home state, he aspired to join the Indian Army. He achieved this goal through the Technical Entry Scheme (TES-35) and underwent rigorous military training at the Officers Training Academy in Gaya. In June 2020, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant into the Corps of Signals, marking the beginning of a promising military career.
After serving with his parent unit, Captain Singh was deputed to the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, a unit actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Known among his peers and subordinates for his calm demeanor, sharp tactical understanding, and strong leadership qualities, he quickly established himself as a dependable and courageous officer.
On 13 August 2024, acting on credible intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the Shivgarh-Assar forest area of Doda district, security forces launched a joint operation involving the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Captain Deepak Singh was tasked with leading two teams from 48 Rashtriya Rifles into a challenging operational environment marked by dense vegetation, rugged terrain, and scattered boulders.
Demonstrating sound tactical judgment, he established a vantage position to monitor movement in the area. At approximately 7:30 PM, he detected suspicious activity and swiftly maneuvered his team to engage the terrorists. Despite the onset of darkness and difficult terrain, he maintained relentless pressure on the adversaries and continued surveillance throughout the night.
At first light on 14 August 2024, Captain Singh reorganized his team and initiated a systematic search operation. During this phase, the team recovered an M4 assault rifle, ammunition, and grenades, indicating the presence of heavily armed militants. However, the situation took a sudden and dangerous turn when an injured terrorist, concealed among the boulders and abandoned by his associates, opened fire on the advancing troops.
In a moment that defined his character, Captain Deepak Singh acted without hesitation. Sensing immediate danger to his buddy soldier, he pushed him to safety, fully exposing himself to enemy fire. In doing so, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite his critical injuries, he displayed exceptional courage by advancing towards the terrorist and engaging him with precise and controlled fire. His actions not only neutralized the immediate threat but also ensured the safety of his team.
Captain Deepak Singh succumbed to his injuries on 14 August 2024, attaining martyrdom in the finest traditions of the Indian Army. His fearless leadership and unwavering commitment to his men reflected the very essence of soldiering—placing the lives of others above one’s own.
In recognition of his gallantry, the Government of India announced the award of the Shaurya Chakra to Captain Deepak Singh on Republic Day 2025. The honour was formally conferred during the Defence Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 23 May 2025, where his parents received the medal on his behalf. The nation paid tribute to his sacrifice, with leaders including Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami acknowledging him as a proud son of the state who upheld the highest ideals of service and sacrifice.
Captain Deepak Singh is survived by his parents and two sisters. His life story continues to inspire countless young Indians, especially those aspiring to join the armed forces.
