A small passenger aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Southend Airport on Sunday, erupting into a massive fireball and triggering an immediate response from emergency services. The aircraft, reportedly a Beech B200, was bound for Lelystad in the Netherlands when the incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses described a loud explosion followed by flames shooting into the sky just moments after the plane became airborne. Emergency teams swiftly reached the crash site, prompting the evacuation of nearby locations, including the Rochford Hundred Golf Club and Westcliff Rugby Club, due to their proximity to the crash zone.
Essex Police confirmed the ongoing emergency operation. “We are working with all emergency services at the scene now, and that work will be ongoing for several hours,” a police spokesperson said.
The cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage, and authorities have not yet released information regarding casualties. Investigators from the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) are expected to examine the site in detail.
The incident has shocked local residents and raised concerns over flight safety in the area, especially with Southend Airport handling a growing number of regional and chartered flights in recent months.
