The Indian Air Force is participating in a bilateral exercise between Indian and French Air Force named Exercise ‘Garuda-VI’ France from 01-12 Jul 19. This is the sixth edition of Exercise Garuda and is being planned at French Air Force Base, Mont-de-Marsan. The last exercise, ‘Garuda V’ was held at Air Force Station Jodhpur in Jun 2014.

Hello Friends, I am Mansi Shelar from Nashik, Maharashtra. Recently, I got recommended for the ICGS and am looking forward to be a proud member of the uninformed cadre of officers and serve our great Nation. I had started my preparation with ssbcrack website. It gave me adequate inputs on various tests and how to prepare in great details. The experiences of successful students also gave useful tips in that direction. Hence, I thought of sharing my approach and experience on ssbcrack.com after getting recommended. I am a Mechanical Engineer and looking forward to a technical career in the armed forces. I wish to thank SSBCrack which guided me in preparation of tests, GK, current affairs and technology questions. Friends, I also wish to thank Brigadier Chande (retd), who is at Nashik, for his scientific guidance in various tests and for my overall personality development; which helped me to perform very confidently. He has been ex President, IO and Sr GTO in SSBs. I am sharing my Success Story so that many aspiring students can draw some benefits.
Initially, I had my preliminary selection board (PSB) on 17th December 2018. I went to Mumbai (Worli headquarters) for PSB. The OIR test comprised of 80 questions, these were on number series, blood relations, analogy, word formation, memorising numbers, etc being shown on the screen with each question having a specific time limit and had to be encircled in the OMR sheet. I had done real-time practices in Verbal and Non-Verbal sets of Intelligence and Reasoning Tests, which I procured from ssbcrack.com. They are very good sets and cover the entire spectrum. The results were announced and I was selected for PPDT. My picture was about a ‘lady sitting on the couch and thinking’. I wrote a story about her thought to become an officer and preparation for a competitive exam and doing well subsequently; which struck my mind at that moment. The discussion was quite smooth. I participated well in the formation of the group story. Spoken English is very important, I realised. I was hopeful about my selection and I got selected for FSB.
After PSB there was a month gap for FSB. Being new to this field, I fetched material from ssbcrack.com and youtube. I also got reference of Brigadier Harish Chande sir who trained me very methodically in every aspect of SSB Tests along with gk, equipment knowledge, technology and current affairs.
On 3rd Feb,2019 I had my reporting for FSB:-
Day minus 1
Time of reporting
was 3 pm. The following things happened:-
Document
verification, Filling PIQ form, Allotment of rooms
Day 1:
We got our chest
numbers on day 1. At around 10:am the psychology test started. It consisted of
TAT (12 pictures), WAT (60 words), SRT (60 situations) and SDT.
TAT: I wrote every story on
positive theme, my central character was forthcoming, action oriented, doing
something for the society and real time. I avoided imaginations and Bollywood
type scripts. I was affirmative in my narration. Blank story was on an anti
terrorism operation by a young police officer. I kept my English neat, without
grammer and logic mistakes.
WAT: One must write proper association with the Word shown. Try to
attempt all words, if not, at least above 55 words. Make positive and complete
sentences.
SRT: I attempted 54 situations writing 3 reactions to each situation. Give
logical responses and stick to reality. One must be in the situation while
giving responses and not be imaginative.
SDT: I had prepared and practiced my SDT well before. So, I could write
them all within the stipulated time.
Day 2: Personal Interview
My interview was
approximately for 50 min. Questions were based on my SDT and PIQ. Sir asked me
few technical questions. I was also asked about the city I belong to. Here, I
will say that speak correct, confident and be analytical in answers throughout
your Interview.
Friends, I also suggest
you not to be over confident, maintain eye contact with the interviewing
officer and be genuine while giving answers to his probing questions.
GD: Avoid arguments and put up strong points smartly. Try to initiate
the discussion.
GPE: Practice few group planning exercises before. Be precise in
observing and go in minute details in the planning by making efficient use of
the resources available.
Lecturette: There are 4 topics. I chose NITI AAYOG. Follow a pattern for your
topic which includes its introduction, past, present and future along with the
consequences and scopes. Prepare for few lecturette topics at home and practice
in front of mirror in standing position.
Day 4: Board Conference:
Stay calm, just
believe in your efforts and answer confidently. Questions asked to me at the
conference were,
How was your
stay? How many friends did you make? What did you do on your day off? Rate your
performance? Any Suggestions?
My Recommendation at FSB is due to my scientific approach which I got from ssbcrack.com and personal guidance for my PD which I received from Brigadier Harish Chande, Nashik.

‘Make in India’ programme is being used by the Government for defence procurements by categorising the capital acquisition proposals under ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’, ‘Buy (Indian)’, ‘Buy and Make (Indian)’, ‘Make’ and ‘Strategic Partnership Model’ categories of Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP)-2016. DPP -2016 focuses on institutionalising, streamlining and simplifying defence procurement procedure to give a boost to ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government of India. In the last four financial years i.e. from 2015-16 to 2018-19, out of the total 210 contracts, 135 contracts have been signed with Indian Vendors including Defence Public Sector Undertakings/ Public Sector Undertakings/ Ordnance Factory Board and private vendors for capital procurement of defence equipment for Armed Forces such as Helicopters, Naval vessels, Radars, Ballistic Helmets, Artillery Guns, Simulators, Missiles, Bullet Proof Jackets, Electronic Fuzes, and Ammunition.
Government has issued 439 licenses covering 264 companies till March 2019. Industrial Licenses are issued for manufacturing of tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, defence aircraft, space craft and parts thereof, warship, arms and ammunition and allied items of defence equipment, parts and accessories thereof. In addition, for a large number of defence components, no license is required. There are more than 8000 MSMEs which are among the vendor base of OFB &Defence PSUs supplying various items to them.
The percentage of expenditure on purchase of defence equipment (both Capital & Revenue) by the three Services from Indian companies was 54% of total expenditure in the financial year 2018-19.
In pursuance of ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government, following measures have been taken to achieve substantive self-reliance in defence production: –
Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) has been revised in 2016 wherein specific provisions have been introduced for stimulating growth of the domestic defence industry.
A new category of procurement ‘Buy {Indian-IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)}’ has been introduced in DPP-2016 to promote indigenous design and development of defence equipment. It has been accorded top most priority for procurement of capital equipment. Besides this, preference has been accorded to ‘Buy (Indian)’,‘Buy and Make (Indian)’ & ‘Make’ categories of capital acquisition over ‘Buy (Global)’ & ‘Buy &Make (Global)’ categories.
Government has notified the ‘Strategic Partnership (SP)’ Model which envisages establishment of long-term strategic partnerships with Indian entities through a transparent and competitive process, wherein they would tie up with global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to seek technology transfers to set up domestic manufacturing infrastructure and supply chains.
The ‘Make’ Procedure has been simplified with provisions for funding of 90% of development cost by the Government to Indian industry and reserving projects not exceeding development cost of Rs.10 Crore (Government funded) and Rs.3 Crore (Industry funded) for MSMEs.
Separate procedure for ‘Make-II’ sub-category has been notified wherein a number of industry friendly provisions such as relaxation of eligibility criterion, minimal documentation, provision for considering proposals suggested by industry/individual etc., have been introduced. Till date, 36 proposals for development by industry have been given ‘In-principle’ approval under Make-II.
Government has decided to establish two defence industrial corridors to serve as an engine of economic development and growth of defence industrial base in the country. These are spanning across Chennai, Hosur, Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu and spanning across Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh (UP).
An innovation ecosystem for Defence titled Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) has been launched in April 2018. iDEX is aimed at creation of an ecosystem to foster innovation and technology development in Defence and Aerospace by engaging Industries including MSMEs, Start-ups, Individual Innovators, R&D institutes and Academia and provide them grants/funding and other support to carry out R&D which has potential for future adoption for Indian defence and aerospace needs.
The Ministry has instituted a new framework titled ‘Mission Raksha Gyan Shakti’ which aims to provide boost to the IPR culture in indigenous defence industry.
Government has notified a Policy for indigenisation of components and spares used in Defence Platforms in March 2019 with the objective to create an industry ecosystem which is able to indigenize the imported components (including alloys & special materials) and sub-assemblies for defence equipment and platform manufactured in India.
Defence Investor Cell has been created in the Ministry to provide all necessary information including addressing queries related to investment opportunities, procedures and regulatory requirements for investment in the sector.
FDI Policy has been revised and under the revised policy, FDI is allowed under automatic route upto 49% and beyond 49% through Government route wherever it is likely to result in access to modern technology or for other reasons to be recorded.
The Defence Products List for the purpose of issuing Industrial Licenses (ILs) under IDR Act has been revised and most of the components, parts, sub-systems, testing equipment and production equipment have been removed from the list, so as to reduce the entry barriers for the industry, particularly small & medium segment. The initial validity of the Industrial Licence granted under the IDR Act has been increased from 03 years to 15 years with a provision to further extend it by 03 years on a case-to-case basis.
The process for export clearance has been streamlined and made transparent & online.
Offset guidelines have been made flexible by allowing change of Indian Offset Partners (IOPs) and offset components, even in signed contracts. Foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are now not required to indicate the details of IOPs and products at the time of signing of contracts. ‘Services’ as an avenue of offset have been re-instated.
Government has set up the Technology Development Fund (TDF) to encourage participation of public/private industries especially MSMEs, through provision of grants, so as to create an eco–system for enhancing cutting edge technology capability for defence applications.

5 Things You Must Know About Operation BANDAR – Balakot Air Strikes. When the Air Force sent its package of 12 Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft to attack the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist camp in Balakot on February 26, it code-named it ‘Operation Bandar (Monkey)’, to maintain secrecy. “In order to maintain secrecy and ensure that the plans don’t leak out, the Balakot operations were given the codename Operation Bandar,” senior defence sources said. Without detailing any specific reason behind the name, sources said monkeys have always held a special place in India’s war culture as seen in the epic Ramayana, where Lord Rama’s lieutenant Lord Hanuman quietly sneaked into Lanka and destroyed the entire capital city of the demon Ravana.
5 Things You Must Know About Operation BANDAR
On February 26, 12 Mirages having taken off from multiple air bases crossed over into the Pakistani air space and carried out missile attacks on Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camp in Balakot town of Khyber Pakhtunwa province.
The attacks carried out by the Indian Air Force, pilots had dropped five Spice 2000 bombs out of which four penetrated the rooftops of the building in which the terrorists were sleeping. The attacks were carried out at 3.30 AM and within a few minutes after dropping the bombs on their designated targets, the Indian Air Force planes returned to their bases.
The aircraft used in the attack belonged to the No 7 and No 9 squadrons of the Indian Air Force and included the non-upgraded planes as the upgraded Mirages of the No 1 squadron did not have the air to ground strike capability at that moment.
While some of the Mirage aircraft carried out the attack on Jaish positions, a team of other few Mirages and Su-30MKI combat aircraft kept the Pakistan air force planes away from causing any hindrance or launching any counter-offensive. As per the Air Force briefings to the government, 80 per cent of the bombs had been dropped successfully on their targets and had carried out the requisite damage to the enemy locations.
The operations were ably supported by the indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control systems (AEW&C) plane Netra. The Indian Air Force had also kept its team of Garud commandos on stand-by for any kind of operations that may have been required due to any kind of emergency there. The Indian Air Force is also planning to reward the IAF pilots who took part in the attack with Vayu Sena Medal for Gallantry for their acts of bravery. (ANI)
