CDS 2 2018 Notification & Exam Date

CDS 2 2018 Notification published by UPSC on 08 Aug 2019. Candidates who are waiting to join the Indian Army Airforce and Navy after graduation can apply for the CDS 2 2018 written exam which is conducted by UPSC. The Indian armed forces always give the fair chances to the students. Starting from the age of maturity, they start with the NDA, TES and ends up to the T.A. examination. CDS is also a chance provided to the graduate candidates. UPSC conducts the exam and gives the chance to the candidates to join any of the three services as per their eligibility. A short summary of eligibility criteria for CDS 2 2018 is given below.PREPARE FOR THE CDS and SSB INTERVIEW

The eligible candidates shall be issued an e-Admit Card three weeks before the commencement of the examination. The e-Admit Card will be made available on the UPSC website (www.upsc.gov.in) for downloading by candidates. No eAdmit Card will be sent by post. All the applicants are required to provide valid & active e-mail i.d. while filling up online application form as the Commission may use electronic mode for contacting them.

Eligibility Criteria

Citizenship – The eligibility of the exam is extended to the citizen of India subject of Bhutan, subject of Nepal, Tibetan Refugee or a person of Indian Origin migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire or Vietnam.

Educational Qualification – The education qualification for all the services is different in CDS examination.

  • Army – For army, the candidate must have a graduate degree form a recognised university.
  • Navy – The candidate must possess a B.Tech / B.E. degree.
  • Air force – The candidates must either have a B.tech/ B.E. degree or a graduation degree with physics and maths studied as compulsory subjects in 10+2.

Age – The age range for CDS 2 2018 is different for all services.

  • For IMA-Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd July, 1995 and not later than 1st July, 2000 only are eligible.
  •  For Indian Naval Academy- Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd July, 1995 and not later than 1st July, 2000 only are eligible.
  • 20 to 24 years as on 1st July 2019 i.e. born not earlier than 2nd July, 1995 and not later than 1st July, 1999 (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable upto 26 yrs. i.e. born not earlier than 2nd July, 1993 and not later than 1st July, 1999) only are eligible.
  • For Officers’ Training Academy—(SSC Course for men) unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd July, 1994 and not later than 1st July, 2000 only are eligible.
  • For Officers’ Training Academy—(SSC Women Non-Technical Course) Unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible. They should have been born not earlier than 2nd July, 1994 and not later than 1st July, 2000.

NOTE : Male divorcee/widower candidates cannot be treated as unmarried male for the purpose of their admission in IMA/INA/AFA courses and accordingly they are not eligible for these courses.

Steps To Submit the Application Form

  • Go to upsconline.nic.in
  • Click on Part 1 and submit your personal and contact details.
  • Then set your preference for the academies as per your qualification and age.
  • Get your registration id and head to Part 2 of the application form.
  • Select the mode of depositing the fees of Rs. 200.
  • After depositing the fees, select your centre of examination.
  • Then upload our photo and signature in mentioned file size and dimensions.
  • Then check your declaration and submit the form.
  • Download a copy of the application form for future use.

Exam pattern

The exam is divided into 3 papers.

The candidates, who have applied for IMA, AFA and NA have to attend all the 3 papers. While the candidates of OTA have to appear for the first 2 paper i.e. English and General Abilities.

The candidates have to get over the sectional cut off of every paper and a combined cut-off. The combined cut-off for all the academies is also different.

The candidates, who clear the exam will get their SSB on the basis of their marks scored and the preference they have filled in their application form (part 1)

  • Last date of form submission – 3 September 2018
  • Date of examination – 18 November 2018

Conclusion – The CDS exam 2018 will be another crucial chance served by the UPSC for all those aspirants who have completed their graduation in distinct branches. CDS 2 2018 Final Year Student – Can They Apply?

Candidates who are studying in the final year/semester Degree course and have  yet to pass the final year degree examination can also apply provided candidate should not have any present backlog up to the last semester / year for which results have been declared up to the time of submission of application and they will be required to submit proof of passing the degree examination at the time of commencement of course to reach the IHQ of MoD (Army), Rtg ‘A’, CDSE Entry, West Block III, R. K. Puram, New Delhi 110066 in case of IMA/SSC first choice candidates and Naval HQ “DMPR” (OI & R Section), Room No. 204, ‘C’ Wing, Sena Bhawan, New Delhi-110011 in case of Navy first choice candidates and PO3(A)/Air Headquarters, ‘J’ Block, Room No. 17, Opp. Vayu Bhawan, Motilal Nehru Marg, New Delhi-110 106 in case of Air Force first choice candidates by the following dates failing which their candidature will stand cancelled :

  • For admission to IMA on or before 1st July, 2019, Indian Naval Academy on or before 1st July, 2019 and Air Force Academy on or before 13th May, 2019.
  • For admission to Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai on or before 1st October, 2019.
  • Candidates possessing professional and technical qualifications which are recognised by government as equivalent to professional and technical degrees would also be eligible for admission to the examination.
  • In exceptional cases the Commission may treat a candidate, who does not possess any of the qualifications prescribed in this rule as educationally qualified provided that he/she possesses qualifications, the standard of which in the opinion of the Commission, justifies his/her admission to the examination.
  • Candidates, who have yet to pass their degree examination will be eligible only if they are studying in the final year of degree examination. Those candidates who have yet to qualify in the final year Degree Examination and are allowed to appear in the UPSC Examination should note that this is only a special concession given to them. They are required to submit proof of passing the Degree Examination by the prescribed date and no request for extending this date will be entertained on the grounds of late conduct of basic qualifying University Examination, delay in declaration of results or any other ground whatsoever. Candidates who are studying in the final year/semester degree course are required to submit at the time of SSB interview a bonafide certificate issued by University/College stating that they will be able to submit their proof of passing the graduation degree examination by the specified date, failing which their candidature will be cancelled.
  • Candidates who are debarred by the Ministry of Defence from holding any type of commission in the Defence Services shall not be eligible for admission to the examination and if admitted, their candidature will be cancelled.
  • In the event of Air Force candidates being suspended from Flying training for failure to learn flying, they would be absorbed in the Navigation/Ground Duty (Non Tech) Branches of the IAF. This will be subject to availability of vacancies and fulfilling the laid down qualitative requirements.

CDS 2 2018 Application Fee

Candidates (excepting Female/SC/ST candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay a fee of Rs. 200/- (Rupees Two Hundred Only) either by depositing the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI, State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/State Bank of Patiala/State Bank of Travancore or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.

CDS 2 2018 Selection Procedure

Candidates who will apply for the CDS 2 2018 exam successfully will be issues with an admit card to attempt the CDS 2 2018 exam on 18th Nov 2018. UPSC will publish the list of successful candidates who have cleared the CDS 2 2018 written exam in Jan – Feb 2019. All the candidates who have cleared the CDS 2 2018 written exam will be registering to join indian army website for their SSB interview date and once the SSB date selection is live, they can select their SSB interview date. Below is CDS 2 2018 selection procedure.

  • CDS 2 2018 written exam will be conducted.
  • Candidates who will clear the CDS 2 2018 written exam will be called for 5 Day SSB Interview.
  • Candidates will be allocated with SSB dates and Venue, same will be informed after the declaration of the result.
  • Candidates who clear the 5 Day SSB interview procedure will be going for a week-long medical examination.
  • UPSC will publish the merit list of successful candidates.
  • Candidates will get the join instructions of their respective academy based on the order of merit.

Around 2-3 lakh candidates will apply for the CDS 2 2018 written exam and around 10000- 15000 will be able to clear the written exam, out of all the successful candidates around 500-1000 candidates will only clear the SSB interview and Medical examination. Though the CDS exam is not that though at it consists of Maths, English, and GK, it can be cleared with better self-study and everyday practice. On the other hand, the main challenge is the 5 Day long SSB interview, this is something you need to prepare for, SSB interview is India’s one of the toughest interviews with very low success rate. CDS 2 2018 Admit Card

Candidates who will apply for the CDS 2 2018 exam successfully will be getting their admit card a month prior to the exam date. To download the CDS 2 2018 admit card you need to visit the UPSC website and you can download your CDS 2 2018 admit card using your name and application number. The Union Public Service Commission will publish the CDS 2 2018 Call Letter in October 2018. Candidates who do not apply for the exam correctly might not get their admit card so do read the instructions before you apply.

Tips to Clear CDS 2 2018 Exam

    1. Know the syllabus first, candidates who are very good in general mathematics, English and GK, especially the freshers, never look and study the syllabus of CDS exam. Always study the syllabus of cds exam which will help you to understand what they might ask in cds exam paper. After you scan the whole cds exam syllabus, make sure you are filtering out topics where you do not need any preparation and you are 100% confident of clearing it, topics which you are not 100% confident are the one you want to prepare to clear CDS exam. Weed out the topics which you have zero knowledge on and keep them for last. So here the basic idea is to prepare as many as topics you can with 100% confident, even if you missed out 10% of the topics from Maths, English and GK it won’t affect you that much. To have better understanding of these topics, refer to the cds exam questions blueprint.
    2. Refer to previous question papers of cds exam; this method of preparation is followed by many successful candidates since many years. So always solve 10-15 previous question papers and find out where you are lacking, focus on topics which you are sure about and you will succeed without any doubt. 
    3. Consider various preparation sources like books, e-books, online preparation, online groups, blogs etc. This will make your preparation rock solid and you will also discover things which you are not aware of while preparing with the single source. So extend your horizon to discover more things related to cds exam preparation, you never know what advantage you will get by preparing with all other sources.
    4. Start well in advance and make a plan as to how you are going to prepare for cds exam, stick to your plan till the end. Most of the candidates who are good enough to clear the cds exam never realize the importance of time, at the last minute they misses out the revising topics which are very important for cds exam, this leads to sure shot failure. So always try to kick start your cds exam preparation as soon as you can.

10 Tips For Territorial Army Exam

“One’s a soldier is always a soldier”. The armed forces provide several opportunities to induct officer like personalities. One of those is Territorial Army that is open for the aspirants of age up to 42 years. Territorial Army examination is scheduled on 30th July, 2017 and several armed forces aspirants are expected to attend the exam. The exam is just a few weeks ahead and candidates are preparing for the exam. Firstly below is the exam pattern of the exam.

Like every exam, this exam also needs a strategy to clear. For that, here are some tips that will help aspirants in scoring more in the exam.

  1. Score maximum in all – The sectional cut-off is the point to concern in the exam. So make sure you pass in all the sections individually, without neglecting any of the section.
  2. Score high in your best section – There are 4 sections in the Territorial exam. Reasoning, Mathematics, G.K., and English. Try to score more in the subject in which you have a good grab.
  3. Reasoning level can be easily covered – The level of the reasoning paper is average and sometimes easy. The candidates need basic observation and differentiation knowledge to solve the question. Do some prior practice to maintain your score. So for reasoning, just observe and solve.
  4. Mathematics need pace – Maths section in the Territorial Army needs a high speed of solving the problems. This section comes with average complexity and candidates can easily solve the problems using basics of mathematics.
  5. Mind the total cut off – Not only just sectional cut off, the total cut off of the exam is also crucial. The candidate has to score above it. So don’t just stay average in all. Score as much as you can.
  6. GK contains diverse question – The 50 questions from GK comes from diverse topics covering all, science, history, economics, etc. Keeping a level hold in all is the requirement of clearing the exam.
  7. English need practice – Analysis of the T.A. question paper 2016, English brought hurdles to many aspirants due to a high level of questions. Practice for it, solve the sample papers, previous year papers and start reading English newspaper, periodicals, magazines to excel your knowledge.
  8. Don’t stuck on tough questions – There might be some questions that will stuck you. Move to the next question without wasting time. If you get sufficient time after solving the paper, go to those tough questions and solve them.
  9. Don’t go beyond your knowledge – The exam has negative marking rule that can reduce your marks in case you try to tick the questions beyond your knowledge and gamble over the questions.
  10. Check before you mark – The exam doesn’t have any OMR sheets. The candidates have to put down his correct option in the printed sheet by writing A, B, C, and D in the space ahead of the question number. Stay clear and precise to your answers.

Conclusion – The exam will have the average level of difficulty. Candidates need to prepare for it in the time available till the exam. I have given AFCAT 3 times cleared all three times and CDS twice. This was my 4th SSB attempt at 3 AFSB Gandhinagar. So let’s start the story.

It was 3rd of July, we reported at Ahmedabad Jn Station, from where we were taken to 3 AFSB Gandhinagar. Our documents were temporarily checked. After which we went for OIR test. In both tests I attempted all the questions and 95% of them were correct for sure. After which we were taken to PPDT and GD. We were a group of 8 students. Our discussion went really well and smooth and at the end when accessor asked for the conclusion, I gave the conclusion. Results were announced, 30 candidates screened in, 2 routed back for lack of documents. After all 28 candidates were to stay for remaining 4 days. I was allotted Chest No. 13.

Right after stage 1, our documents were checked and on the same day we were made to sit in testing hall for Psychology Testing. It ended pretty well for me. I did 60 WATs, 33 SRTs, all TATs and SDTs. After long tiring day, we went to sleep. Next day our group had GTO. We were 8 candidates Chest No. 13 to 20. In GPE, My group agreed on my plan and I narrated the story. I put good and valuable points in both GDs too. I spoke well in lecturette. In PGT, I gave ideas whenever I got any otherwise helped my fellows with apparatus. (Here I would like to advice all of my friends that speak only valuable points and if you are not getting any points, help your mates in doing the tasks and also KEEP MOTIVATING YOUR GROUP). In HGT, it was a bit easier as there were only 4 people. We did it in few minutes. So that’s how our first day of GTO went.

Next day, GTO 2 was there. First was Command Task. I was called by 4 group mates. Then came my turn, GTO was very much jolly and cheerful. He took me to a walk around the ground and asked questions about my city, my education, my future plans and my family. I answered all of them with a smile on my face and confidently. (Tips here for candidates are that do not hesitate and respond to the questions confidently and with a smile. GTO might try to puzzle you but do not worry and keep a little smile always.)

 I called my 2 subordinates.

 GTO asked “Why these two?”

I said “Sir, one is light weight and other is heighted which according to me is required in this task.”

He said “ok! Good.”  (TIP- Never give childish reasons like he is my friend or I don’t like those other chest nos).

I, with help of subordinates, did the task in 15 seconds, seeing which GTO made some modifications; I again did it in a minute. He again made some modifications and made it tougher. I again did it after juggling for a few minutes. He again made few modifications and I was stuck, but I kept trying and doing the task. At last when I didn’t find any way, I asked my subordinate if he can help me to which he gave me a solution. Though not perfectly, somehow we managed to do the task.

GTO said “ok Shubham, I got your idea. That’s great”.

 

 

That’s how my Command task was done. (TIP- keep trying never lose hope. Don’t get frustrated and remember always brief your subordinates before starting over the task.)

After that it was time for IO and Due to heavy rains, our Individual Obstacles test was cancelled and we were freed that day. We went to roam around Gandhinagar later on and came back soon.

As next day my interview was scheduled and as a result I was a bit nervous. But I was ready.
In Interview, The interview asked my introduction and came on my academics directly. He then roasted me like a chicken as I had really poor grades in my 12th (just 58% and 33 marks in Maths). I said I accept my mistake and take full responsibility, but he was in no mood of sparing me. He kept roasting me for another 10 minutes. But I was sitting like a rigid non-living body smiling continuously. He then asked my daily routine and about my college hostel. Suddenly he turned towards rapid fire round and there were like countless questions such that I couldn’t remember half of them. But whatever I remembered, I answered. (TIPS- Rapid fire always comes in a sequence and you must practice it at home). He then suddenly turned towards GK, as I’d mentioned it as my hobby in my PIQ- “reading GK Books”. He asked my views on GST, South China Sea conflict and most importantly about Baluchistan and role of India (STRANGE BUT TRUE- I WAS READING THE SAME BOOK IN LIBRARY THE EARLIER DAY AND ONE MORE PERSON WAS SITTING THERE WHO, I THINK, WAS A LIBRARIAN. SO I Think.. EVERYTHING IS WATCHED AND EVALUATED.) He again asked me- “How many group mates called you as a subordinate in Command Task?” I said-“ 5 sir” (Bangg.. MISTAKE, actually only 4 called, I counted my turn also) Interview went on for few more minutes on my family, friends, Events I participated etc.. and I was asked why I chose IAF over private sector ( as I already had Placement offer). I answered aptly.
He asked If I want to correct any of my answers to which I replied NO SIR. (Later I realised, He was expecting me to correct the no of person called me answer, but I missed that.)
Then after a little more chit chat, IO said-“Ok Shubham, It was nice talking to you and wish very best for your future.” To which I replied with a thank you with a smile and left the room. It was the shorted interview in my SSB history just 40 minutes. ( TIPS- Don’t get panic, Don’t lie, Don’t give excuses over your failures, Don’t be nervous, Be confident, Keep little smile on your face, Prepare your GK at best, Try to be fluent while speaking, Both Hindi and English are acceptable but try to speak only English.)

We were given late night permission to come as Gandhinagar has famous Akshardham Temple, so All 28 of us went to see the temple and very amazing Water Show there. It is breath taking. We came back, had our dinner and went to sleep.

Next was the last day of procedure, the much awaited CONFERENCE. We were made to sit in testing hall. One by one, everybody was going and coming out. But before my turn, there was a 15 minute wait, which made everybody curious as well as confident (some of my group mates predicted my recommendation 2 days ago).

Ring..

I entered..

Officer- Good morning Shubham! Have a seat.

Me- GM sir and thank you.

O- Shubham, Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Me- Pilot officer in the Indian Air Force, sir!

O- What kind of people you like to work with?
ME- Adventures as most my time is spent in field and my friends are also sportsmen.

O- How do you help your friends and juniors?
Me- I teach my juniors for competitive exams and help my friends in studies as well as in ever possible way I can

O- How was your performance this time.
Me- Sir, I was confident this time and have done really well except a few mistakes.

O- Any suggestion for Food or stay? How was your stay? Did you enjoyed it?
Me- Everything was good sir. My stay was awesome. Made many friends, roamed around Gandhinagar, it’s a beautiful city. I liked my stay here and it’s life time experience for me sir.

O- Ok then Shubham, It was nice talking to you. All the best for your future. You may leave now.

I left the room. After everybody’s turn and a wait of 10 minute. Our DSO came and gave some inspirational speech which motivated us. Then He said-“ So it’s time for the results now.. and the candidates who are recommended are.. chest no. 13..”
( Suddenly the world gone silent for me. I looked up thanked my father who left this world when I was 7, I stood up, said my name, went to front and stood with glitter in my eyes.)

..and the DSO sir continued.. Chest no. 23. That’s all gentlemen. You may clap for these two gentlemen if you want, to which the hall filled with cheers of claps. He said Thank you and asked us to take our luggage and come back in hall.  We both came out of hall and hugged each other and our eyes filled with tears. We came back and our friends were waiting for us to hug and say good bye. We met with everyone and they all left.

We filled our forms, completed all the formalities. Again DSO and one more officer sir came and shook hands, briefed us with procedures and gifted us some goodies (pen, diaries, a cap, a poster, a key ring and a bag). We felt so proud and they left. Soon we changed our dresses and moved out and to our surprise,  a blue IAF Gypsy was waiting to drop us to railway station.  We clicked a photo outside the 3 AFSB gate and went to station to catch our respective stations. So that’s how our another attempt turned into a successful chance and brought us one step closer to our goal.

Having my Medicals in sept as I’ve cleared my PABT and CPSS in my earlier attempt so I don’t need to give it again. Since yesterday, I have started to work on my physical and reduce some weight.

TIPS-

  • Don’t lose hope, keep trying for your goal.
  • Whether it is your first attempt or 21st, give with full josh and energy.
  • Always keep a smile on your face.
  • Be humble and keep calm.
  • Help the needy persons in your life as much as you can. Good deeds always come to rescue.
  • Last but not the least, whenever you think of quitting, think of why you started.

All the very best friends. Be a warrior. Learn to fight your fears. Practice a lot and be physically and mentally fit. Hope to see you soon as a part of great Indian Armed Forces. Jai Hind.. Jai Bharat.

23-Year-Old Army Lieutenant Drowned At Devkund Waterfall

The body of a 23-year-old Army lieutenant, who had drowned at Devkund waterfall near Tamhini Ghat in Raigad district on Sunday, was found late on Monday after an extensive search operation. The deceased, identified as Lieutenant Akhil Choudhary, was undergoing training at the College of Military Engineering in Pune. Earlier on Monday, the body of Vinit Phatak, a 25-year-old youth from Pune who had drowned in the same area, was found. Search and rescue teams from various agencies, along with local police and villagers, had come together to carry out the search.

Lieutenant Choudhary and Phatak were part of two separate groups that had gone to the Devkund waterfall near Tamhini Ghat for a picnic on Sunday. On Sunday afternoon, local police received information about the drowning of two persons at two different spots near the Devkund waterfall. Soon, a rescue operation was launched for both, but none of the two could be traced till late on Sunday. The rescue operation resumed on Monday morning.

“Teams from the National Disaster Response Force and Indian Army started the search and rescue operation with the help of over 50 policemen and local villagers, who are familiar with the difficult terrain. Later, Navy divers, some professional river rafters, and divers also joined the search. Phatak’s body was found in the afternoon, while Lieutenant Chaudhary’s body was found late in the evening,” said Inspector Rajendra Pardeshi of Mangaon police station in Raigad.

CME officials said that a group of 12 to 15 persons, including some from the college, had gone for a private trip when the incident took place.

“ Bodies of both persons were handed over to their relatives after the post-mortem examination..,” said police.

Citizenship – Candidates, who are India subject of Bhutan, subject of Nepal, Tibetan Refugee or a person of Indian Origin migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire or Vietnam are eligible for the exam.

Steps to apply

The candidates have to visit upsconline.nic.in and will get NDA 2 2018 forms along with the beginning and ending dates of the forms. The form has 2 parts.

Part 1

It consists of 2 pages having

  1. Personal information and contact information
  2. Preference regarding army, navy and air force.

After the completion of part 1, a registration ID will be the generation which will help the candidate in completing part 2 and generation of admit card before exam.

Part 2

It consists of 3 parts

  1. Fees payment (Rs. 100 – offline or online modes)
  2. Centre selection
  3. Photo and sign upload

After that, final form submission and accepting the declaration is to be done to submit the form.

fee of Rs. 100/- (Rupees one hundred only) either by depositing the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of State Bank of India or by using Visa/MasterCard/Rupay Credit/Debit Card.

HOW TO APPLY: Candidates are required to apply online by using the website upsconline.nic.in Brief instructions for filling up the online Application Form have been given in the notification. Detailed instructions are available on the above mentioned website.

NDA 2 2018 Admit Card: The eligible candidates shall be issued an e-Admit Card three weeks before the commencement of the examination. The e-Admit Card will be made available on the UPSC website (upsc.gov.in) for being downloaded by candidates. No Admit Card will be sent by post. All the applicants are required to provide valid & active
e-mail id while filling up online application form as the Commission may use electronic mode for contacting them.

11 Types of Maths Questions In AFCAT

The level of AFCAT exam comes with optimum difficulty. Most of the times, the questions are easy, tactical and makes the candidate take the time to solve. The questions are a bit simple than defense exams conducted by the UPSC (NDA, CDS) due to limited topics and low level of the difficulty. But, to score more you need to do good in the mathematics. So, here are 11 types of questions that are asked in the AFCAT exam and candidates should prepare them in order to score well.

 

11 Types of Maths Questions In AFCAT

1. Simple Interest – the questions asked related to simple interest can be different, but some direct asked questions are asked many times, where you are given few things and you have to find the missing one.

Example – The amount doubles at a certain rate in 5 years. In how much time will it become 8 times of the principal?

Sol. – If amount becomes double in 5 years, then it will become 8 times in

P = (PXRX5)/100 the R = 1/5

Now 7P = [PX(1/5)XT] / 100

= 35 years.

 

2. Percentage – the questions related to the comparison of the percentage are commonly asked in the exam.

Example – A’s salary is less than B by 20 percent. By what percent is B’s salary more than A?

Sol – Let the salary of B = 100 then A’s salary would be 80.

Now taking the percentage of B with respect to A, we get

(100/80) X100 = 125

So B’s salary is more than A by 25%

 

3. Ratio = The duplicates, triplicates sub-duplicates are very important from AFCAT point of view.

Example – The duplicate ratio of 5:6 is

Sol – The duplicate ratio of 5:6 is 52: 62

Similarly triplicates = cube of ratio

Sub-duplicates = square root of ratio.

 

4. Compound interest – the question asked can be over a given time compounded semi-annually or quarter annually. In these questions, divide the rate by 2(semi-annually) or 4(quarter annually) and multiply time by 2(semi-annually) or 4(quarter annually).

Example – what would be the interest on 4000 at a 10 % rate for 2 years compounded semi-annually?

Sol. using the formula of compound interest

Principal – 4000; rate = 10/2 = 5; time = 2X2 = 4

Amount. – 4000(1+5/100)4

 -> 4000(21/20)4

= 4862.025

CI = 4862.025 – 4000 = 862.025

 

5. Profit and loss – these days, simply formula based questions are rarely asked on this topic. A combination of profit and loss is usually asked in AFCAT.

Example – A man sold an article at 5 % profit instead of selling at a loss of 5%, so she got 20 Rs more. The cost price of the article was?

Sol. Profit + loss = Rs. 20

5%+5% = Rs. 20

If 10% = 20 than 100% would be = (20X100) /10 = Rs.200

CP = Rs. 200

 

6. Average – Questions related to the average of a specific range of number are usually asked.

Example 1 – The average of the first 50 even numbers are

Sol. formula – (last number + 2)/2

= 2,4,6,8,……..100

= (100+2)/2

= 102/2 = 51

Example 2 = the average of first 50 odd numbers is

Sol. formula – (last number + 1)/2

= 1.3.5.7… 99

= (99+1)/2

= 100/2 = 50

 

7. Train problems – the problems of the train and platform are crucial and the candidates should know the basics of the questions. The problems related to the man and train and platform and train is very common.

Example – A man standing on the 180m long platform observes a train crossing him in 8 seconds and crossing the entire platform in 20 seconds. The speed of the train is?

Sol – let the length of the train be T

The speed of the train is constant. So the speed of the train while crossing the man is equal to the speed of the train while crossing the platform

T/8 = (T+180)/20

T = 120 m

Speed = 120/8 or (120+180)/20 = 15mps

15 mps X (18/5) = 54 Kmph

 

8. Work and time – Here, the questions related to the comparison of the working ability of the men, women and boy is important, which candidate must prepare. Here the candidate has to get the working compression of the type of people and then use it to solve the question.

Example – 8 men can complete a work in 15 days with the help of 12 boys. While 10 men can complete the same work in 18 days. In how many days, 15 boys will complete the same work?

Sol – (8M + 12B) X 15days = 10M X 18 Days

1M = 3B

Using this comparison, we can find

10M X 18 Days = 15 Boys X a Days

OR

30 Boys X 18 Days = 15 Boys X a Days

A = 36 Days

 

9. Age – A combination of age and ration related problems are asked in the exam which need a bit basic knowledge of both he topics to get the right answer.

Example – the ratio of present age of A and B is 7:5. 4 years hence, the ratio of their age will be 11:9. The present age of B is?

Sol. – Let the present age of A and B will be 7x and 5x.

Then their age 4 year hence would be

7x + 4 = 11

5x + 4 = 9

X= 1; so the present age of A and B will be 7 X 1 and 5 X 1 OR 7 and 5 years.

 

10. Mensuration – The questions related to this topic are not frequently asked, but a few questions to having a combination of percentage and dimensions are asked in the exams.

Example – When a towel is bleached, it was found to have lost 20% of its length and 10% of its breadth. Find the percentage of decrease in area?

Sol. – Let the length and breadth of the towel be 100 and 100.

Area = 10000

After reduction of length by 20% and breadth by 10%, then the new area would be = 80X90= 7200

Percentage of reduction = [10000-7200]/10000 X 100

= 28%

 

11. Simplification – The questions from simplification are usually asked by embedding a problem into a statement and the candidate has to follow the statement to get the equation.

Example – 7 is added to a certain number, the sum is multiplied by 5; the product is divided by 9 and 3 is subtracted from the quotient. The remainder left is 12. What is the number?

Sol – Let the number be x then

[(7+x)X 5]/9 – 3 = 12

Using BODMAS

x = 20

Conclusion – The type of questions asked in the AFCAT exam is wide and candidates have to practice for higher level of difficulty to get a good hold over the section. The types mentioned above are prominently observed in the AFCAT exam and candidates should prepare them perfectly. Well, mathematics is all about practice. So keep on practicing for questions as much as you can.

BSF Ace Commando Faces Court Martial

Once hailed as a hero, BSF commando Anubhav Atrey is now in a downward spiral. The assistant commandant from the 113 Battalion of the Border Security Force, who featured in a documentary created by the National Geographic Channel on the agency that’s India’s first line of defence, is now facing court martial over a “civilian death”.

Atrey purportedly got into trouble over self-defence action that resulted in the death of a Bangladeshi teenager last year in a suspected case of cross-border gold smuggling.

 

The incident took place on May 14 last year when the officer was deployed at Banpur post of BSF in Krishnaganj village of West Bengal’s Nadia district.

The killing sparked a furore in Bangladesh at a time when BSF chief KK Sharma was on a visit to Dhaka for talks with his counterpart, putting pressure on the force to act against one of its own.

WHAT HAPPENED

In his statement to the court of inquiry, the officer said, “There were 12-15 gold smugglers who came close to the fence with 2 carrying packets of gold articles to be thrown across to the huts in the Indian side, while 10 of them were carrying sharpedged weapons (machetes or da). But at 10 am, as the smugglers came close to the fence, the BSF constable in the team rushed without any arms to apprehend the suspects.”

In the panic which followed, the officer said he sensed that the smugglers speaking in chaste Bengali told each other “niye jaai (drag the constable into Bangladeshi territory)”.

Another one said, “maar”, which the officer said meant that there was a life-threatening situation for his junior. Atrey said he decided to use the non-lethal weapon, firing the first shot in the air.

The second shot was taken following the standard operating procedure (SOP) at the waist from a distance of 40-50 metres as the miscreants did not honour his appeal and became more aggressive. The shot hit a boy who later died in Bangladeshi territory. Based on an understanding between the BSF and BGB, the border guarding force of Bangladesh, patrol parties on both sides keep a mix of lethal and non-lethal weapons.

After this the smugglers ran to safety across the fence. Minutes later, the commandant informed the officer that the Bangladeshi force had informed them of a “civilian death”.

The two forces held a flag meeting where the BGB was allegedly convinced by the officer’s explanation. But facing heat from Bangladeshi media and the incident looming large over successful talks between the Indian and Bangladeshi contingent, sources say, Atrey became a scapegoat. The court of inquiry blamed the BSF troops for faulty planning but did not recommend any action. But before Atrey could heave a sigh of relief, he was called in for further recording of evidence. The officer who left a teaching job in Kendriya Vidyalaya says he now regrets his decision.

10 Tips To Improve Vocabulary For SSB Interview

For many, cracking SSB becomes very demanding and challenging due to one’s inability to speak or communicate in English. Indeed it is difficult but not impossible. With the right amount of attitude and preparation, one can effortlessly crack SSB. One important note for all the aspirants is you can’t master your speaking skills or vocabulary in a day or two; the process of refining your linguistic skills requires a considerable quantity of time. Another key point in one’s incapability to speak English is not only about a weak base but more importantly, it emphasises the lack of confidence in a person. Confidence insufficiency can occur due to one’s shy nature, fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of being laughed at, or simply inadequate information or knowledge.
How To Prepare for SSB Interview:

 

First of all, you need to have a clear understanding that all these factors are interconnected because your English speaking skills are very closely linked to your knowledge base. If the contents of your awareness are restricted, your verbal expressions and body language will automatically be restricted. If you are a hardcore Armed Forces aspirant and unsound at speaking English, you must start working on your English speaking skills and vocabulary right from today itself.

The techniques enlisted below are direct and effective and need constant practice to reap the desired benefits.

1- The first and foremost step you should take is, start interacting with your family and friends in English and participate freely in all discussions wherein you can assume the center stage. Make this a daily habit. If you want to master the language, there is no better way than to speak it. It may seem awkward initially but you will get used to it in a while.

2- Books are a man’s best friend. How often have we come across this age old adage? But how rarely do we indulge in such custom! Read books, journals or any literary materials which would enhance your vocabulary and also improve your command over the language by illuminating you with newer structures of sentences, syntax, transformation of sentences, tenses, etc.

3- Start grabbing news and current affairs in English. Whether you read or watch the news, prefer English channels or newspaper like The Hindu, or English magazines like India Today, etc. This will not only improve your vocabulary and English formation skills but also keep you up to date with the latest news, happenings around and current affairs required for the SSB interview.

4- Make a list of difficult/standard words simultaneously that you come across while you read books and newspapers and always refer a dictionary. Install a pocket dictionary or thesaurus (most preferably Merriam- Webster Dictionary) app on your smart phones for the same. Keep a target of 10-15 minimum words per day but go on increasing gradually.

5- Watch or listen to English programs on TV or the internet like movies, serials, videos, news, songs etc. and try and capture their diction and manner of speech.

6- Use the mirror strategy.  This is the most beneficial approach because you speak in front of the mirror and you can watch your facial expressions. That will boost your confidence level. When you address yourself all alone, you are more comfortable and can monitor your body language, voice modulation (rhythm, volume, speed, pitch). Keep the volume high and speed low. You can also grab a newspaper and sit in front of the mirror and narrate the headlines to your reflection or simply read a book ‘aloud’ and learn to modulate your voice.

7- Get in the habit of diary writing or journal entry, that will improve your written expressions. This will help you in psychology tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SD) in SSB. It will give more clarity in formulating your thoughts into sentences and minimises time-bound issues.

8-  You can take professional spoken English classes (online or offline) if you have less time left for SSB.  There are a number of websites and sources available that share free tools and study materials. Try  Lingua.ly, it’s a good mobile app for mastering the English language and comes around handy for the working aspirants who can’t devote much time to prepare.

9- Work on the level of your information and knowledge; when you have sufficient knowledge about a particular topic, you can speak anything and everything about it fluently and confidently in English without a fumble. Read journals that entail issues on debated topics of the nation and the world.

10-  Lastly, watch your body language and mannerisms. You actually speak a lot without saying much. Interview in SSB is about 7% words, 38% gestures (and other attitudinal imperatives), and 55% body language. Lack of confidence, nervousness, and other complexes are consequential manifestations that can lead to a poor conduct of the interview. Therefore, it’s always recommended to work on your interpersonal skills, communication skills, and attitudinal imperatives before going for an SSB.
