Captain Vikram Batra Scholarship Programme At Minerva Academy

“We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.”- George Orwell

A soldier’s life is one of perpetual perils and challenges. Yet, it is perhaps among the noblest and most fulfilling careers one can hope to pursue. We here at Minerva Academy acknowledge the toil and personal sacrifice of our honourable men and women in uniform and salute their courage! It is with this deep sense of gratitude that we wish to give a little something back to our heroes at the frontline.

Minerva Academy is India’s No.1 Armed Forces Preparatory Institute which has been training candidates to face SSB Interviews and Written examinations since 1955. Over this time, Minerva Academy has achieved an unbeatable record of selections and success stories. 1 in every 4 officers of the Armed forces is believed to be a Minervan. 6 Pros and Cons of Joining Indian Military: Soldier’s Point of View

6 Pros and Cons of Joining Indian Military Soldier's Point of View

We earlier made you aware of the 14 things you need to know before joining the Indian Armed Forces. What better than having the list from the one living the live himself? So, here are the 7 pros and cons of joining the military from a soldier’s point of view:

Pros:

  1. Job Security: In the army, soldiers are rarely fired and you will always have a job for as long as you want it. Since you are now a Sarkari Damaad, you will have job security depending on the commission you choose. So, there is no general risk of losing your job.
  1. Paid Vacation: In the military you earn about 2 months of paid leave every month (correct me). And these are apart from the weekly offs and government holidays that you get. Plus you can accumulate your leaves as long as your command allows it, and redeem all of those at a time in one year.
  1. Military Discounts: Most places provide the military personnel with discounts and some places even welcome them for free. You get to travel on discounted tickets, get subsidized items in the canteen and much more. You even get treatment in world-class hospitals at discounted rates/free of cost.
  1. Free Education: If you can’t afford college and don’t want to have those horrible student loans hanging over your head, then the military is a good way to go. The NDA provides its cadets with Bachelors in Degree certificate after the completion of their training. The cadets are fresh out of school before joining. What better than this? You are getting your education worth lacs and training for your dream job, both at the same time!
  1. You Get to Learn New Skills: The military emphasises on the constant and consistent learning of its soldiers. If you have other interests, the Indian Military even assists you in your goal to always keep learning and reaching new heights, be it representing Indian in Olympics or undertaking adventurous activities.
  1. Retirement Benefits: After your 20-year long tenure, you enjoy several retirement benefits ranging from medical facilities to canteen facilities to life-long pension!

Cons:

  1. Rank Is Always Greater than Age: Your age is not the same as your rank and that pisses you the most. If a senior of a higher rank than you commands, you better listen to them, even if they are younger than you.
  1. Fitness Is Top Priority: Ha; No Questions Asked. Period. They for sure scrub your asses in the training till you are of the required physique. But, yeah, that’s all worth it after training. The military places its soldiers through extreme training so that the soldier will be ready for anything and thus more likely to come home unscathed after a battle.
  1. You Can’t Quit: You will sign a contract at the time of joining and you will complete the years of service that you said you would. Although there are ways to get out early, most of them involve jail time or a dishonourable discharge by court marshals, things that you don’t probably want.
  1. A Well-Defined yet Rigorous Life: Military life is definitely different. You wake up early in the morning for PT followed by breakfast and theory classes, again followed by some PT. You are free during noon, followed by games/other exercises in the evening.
  1. Being Far Away From Friends And Family: Being stationed in another corner of earth can suck at times. You will miss birthdays, holidays, weddings, births, and even deaths. You can’t take your family to field areas and will be away from them for that time.
  1. Standardized Rules: Rules in the army apply to everyone. You will follow the same standards in personal grooming and clothing, which are often rigid and so not your style.

19 Personality Development Tips From A SSB Recommended Candidate

0
19 Personality Development Tips From A SSB Recommended Candidate

Respected Ladies and Gentleman. I, Sajal Roy, previously recommended from SSC Tech 43(Indian Army-june,2014) with merit medical out, takes this opportunity to write to you again. Thank you SSBCRACK

  1. Don’t  be skeptical to make the tough call: Trust me either you will win or you will learn . This young age is to make the tough calls and dust off the dust.
  2. Stop Procrastination:
    Snooze=Looze
. Don’t push things away. Instead, accept more of such things today and get into the practice of getting things done one after the other. Don’t extend the loop of time for no reason. It’s a honey trap luring you out from the destination of success.
  3. Be the giver: Start getting into the habit of giving more than what has been asked for. Go the extra mile. The extra ingredients added by you, thy shall be remembered for. This is the first step is to develop the selfless habit of serving.  Remove the word expectation from the dictionary of life. Expectations lead only to disappointment  and nothing else. Give, Give and Give.
  4. Exude the attitude of caring: Get into the habit of caring for one and all. Don’t differentiate between the quantitative measure to care and all. This kind of attitude helps in building an effective Team leadership skill.
  5. Be undeterred from wear and tear : Whether you are injured or in whatever depressed state of life, never compromise when it comes to achievements of victories. Trust me in the longer run, your this attitude will thank you.  Victories, achievements will always push u ahead whenever you shall be low. They will never leave you alone. No matter who remains at whichever walk of your life. Victories do remain…………..Lifelong.
  6. Stop and remove the habit of playing a safe game. Don’t be scared of results. Don’t be result oriented. Be purpose oriented. Be performance oriented. Make the performance such that it creates history and leaves footprints into the sands of time. Have the respect for the arena and give the performance a shot that as if it’s your last performance.
  7. Be the lead.Step up , speak up and walk up. Take the stand when necessary even if you are not asked for. Take the stand when there is a chaos or howsoever the situation may demand. But don’t stay numb. Start acting on your call and rest will Follow Your lead
  8. Invest and Enrich: Yes invest and enrich yourself with inspirational stories, motivational books, wisdom, ideas and whatever that comes ahead of you. Invest the time in both mental and physical workout, enrich your mind with morals, thoughts ideas, and everything . Your future self will thank you for this and these all will in turn shape the marvel of your character.
  9. Ask: It takes the paramount amount of courage to ask for help or asking for clarity against a doubt. Step up and ask. Don’t be shaken or skeptical by the fact that you will be mocked upon.  A real person to whom you shall ask will encourage and never make mock of you. So if something like that happens , I guess the person is not confident enough.
  10. Develop Eye for a detail : Don’t take the easy path of reading or driving only conclusions. Go for every minute details that appear. Who knows how many points such things carry. Skipping is good but only in sport not in real life, not in academics and no where else.
  11. Have reasons and not excuses: If you fail to deliver certain targets or performance make sure that the answer that you have holds reasons and not excuses. Reasons will always have a stronghold with practical dimension and is taken and understood by all as it is an outcome of circumstance. But the same is not true for Excuses. That’s the looser’s word.
  12. Do your homework:  If you are discussed on a topic make sure that while your reach home you scrap the in and out of that topic from whichever resource it is possible. This kind of attitude will make your mind  a DATA MINE and the next time you will in a better position to present, explain and understand.  Somethings aren’t told, so you go for the untold.
  13. Make mistakes but not more than once: Mistakes of the same kind should be made only once. Take serious feedback to yourself for the accountability of the mistake and try your best not to repeat the same mistake.
  14. Fail , keep failing but don’t quit and have backup : Yes it’s a truth. Quite often we get so emotionally attached to a goal  that we don’t get out of the preparation mode. This is wrong, on the course of your preparation mode if you are meeting with an opportunity do grab it or do set a strong deadline to your preparation mode. Keep adequate amount of backup and holding it relative as a platform proceed further for the higher jump.
  15. Hardwork: With due respect there is no shortcut that can replace this. Also the tiredness after excruciating session of hardwork has immense satisfaction and brings the actual rest, a sleep in peace. So always work hard as by an instance of lot of situations of hardwork one can develop smart strategy to minimize the timeframe of a problem. I guess now that would be a smartwork. What say ?
  16. Be the angel:  In the righteous spirit it means that one has to be kind even to those who have once been cruel to us. Sounds difficult but not impossible. Respecting is an art and covers all dimensions. Be too noble to get bothered by such petty stuffs. Never take advantage of the distress of any competitor ,be the man as  competition is fine only in the arena and not in personal life. Be the rescuer .
  17. Take responsibility and share credit. Yes when things go wrong and you are in a team or many be alone do have the strength to take responsibility. This attitude reflects perfect leadership. When you see a situation of victory distribute the credit to all team mates and exclude yourself. Do remember all the acts and tasks done by the team mates . A strong sense of memory is essential for perfect leadership. Your appreciation would be silent in nature, but of permanent impression of a true leader.
  18. Don’t focus on the What but dive deep into the Why behind the What: Sounds clumsy isn’t it . True , see the problem is we often burst out our anger or come to  a conclusion on something swiftly based on an immediate scenario. Instead of this, try connecting the dots and figure out as such why did the person misbehave or what was the problem as to which the scenario arises. Try to do in pen and paper too if possible. These ways you will emerge a better person in empathy , build patience as well as save a lot of relationships etc.
  19. Never Escape : If there is an argument or if some person is saying that he or she has some problem with you. No matter how great you are , don’t turn your face off. Of course there has to be a time to turn the face off but not in the first instance. Do talk it out. Human resource is the most precious one.

All these points may seem hypothetical but there approach isn’t .

13 Lessons We All Can Learn From Indian Military

0
13 Lessons We All Can Learn From Indian Military

There’s a lot to learn from everything. There’s a lot to learn from everywhere. We admire and take inspirations from many, be it your father in the army or the father of the nation. But why just admire? Why not learn? Here we bring you some life lessons you can learn from the Armed Forces and be a part of it, yourself:

  1. Having an Offensive Spirit:

In the military, the offensive spirit relates to the feeling or desire to get closer to the enemy aggressively and conquer it completely. Try inculcating the same, except, your goals are your enemy.

  1. Being Dependable:

From my point of view, Indian Military is the most dependable organisation in the time of need. Be it guarding the border 24X7 or saving people from Chennai floods, they are always available at time of call. We can depend on them always and this leads us to the next point

  1. Discipline is your foundation:

Soldiers in the military are very strict about this. Discipline is that foundation that keeps its structure standing, even in the time of war. This can include anything, ranging from being on time to being organised to good planning.

  1. Listen to everyone, Trust your own judgment:

Officers listen to everyone in the team but decide what is in the favour of everyone. This not only helps in being self-confident but helps you in making a more matured decision the next time.

To crack the AFSB and SSB interview, we recommend you to get “Let’s Crack SSB Interview” book from Amazon.

  1. Do Not Discriminate, Whatsoever:

It is well bought that Military has no vacancies based on religion or caste. They believe in providing equal opportunities to all. Hence, even a rickshaw driver’s son could be an officer in the military, just provide him with the opportunity.

  1. Speak less, do more:

No Questions asked.

  1. Being Optimistic:

Do you think being in a terrible situation is the worst thing that has happened to you? Wrong. Try surviving at the Siachen Glacier sometime; you will change your view. Soldiers always see the best in the worst of situations.

  1. Moving Ahead, Always:

There have been innumerable losses to the Indian Military since the war of 1947. But that never let its people down, eventually making it the largest volunteered army in the world. Fall, Rise, Dust Yourself and Keep Moving Ahead.

  1. Sacrificing:

For some, it may mean waking up early in the morning or giving up food to lose weight. But it is a very heavy word for the soldiers. From being away from their family for months to laying down their lives for the nation, a soldier sure teaches us the true meaning of sacrifice.

  1. Being Determined Towards Success:

Soldiers are just normal people, except they ‘do’ and ‘try’, against all odds, till they succeed. Needless to say, this is the quality that sets apart a soldier from a regular person.

  1. Service Before Self:

Indian Military Academy’s code of honour is that what makes every soldier selfless, encouraging them to act beyond the call of duty and make the “ultimate sacrifice”. Soldiers, take a bow.

  1. Leading and Believing:

Does this need an introduction? Soldiers are those leaders who can sacrifice their lives for their team or fellow mates. This so is summed by Capt Batra’s last words to his fellow soldier who was tasked to retrieve an injured mate’s body, “Tu baal-bachchon wala hai, peeche hat jaa”.

  1. Experience Matters:

Visualize this: You are going to war with a soldier (who is not an officer) who has spent 30 years in the army, which means he has 30 years of knowledge on tactics and strategy. You, however, are just a young 21-year-old officer, with some magna cum laude in military strategy and a master’s degree in advanced leadership. When you are in a team, you will always need to take advice from the ones who are more experienced than you.

10 Daily Tasks To Improve Officers Like Qualities In You

0
10 Daily Tasks To Improve Officers Like Qualities In You

Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) are behavioral qualities that are expected out of every officer of the Armed forces of India. The three major tests conducted at SSB are designed to check OLQs in the candidates, OLQs are nothing something related to Indian army officers, but these few basic qualities each and everyone must possess to get successful in life. No matter what your profession is, these qualities will always help you to achieve big goals. Read the below points carefully and try to inculcate in your daily life and actions.

Here are the 10 daily tasks to improve your OLQs:

  1. Inculcate the ‘Keep calm and carry on’ approach in life: First it’ll be a conscious effort but slowly it becomes second nature. Don’t be flustered. Don’t show emotions. Don’t be overly friendly. Always be strong – physically and mentally.
  2. Intelligence Quotient: Try to solve every problem yourself without waiting for anyone. By doing so, you can have such practical intelligence that you can find the solution for everything.
  3. Command Respect: This requires you to be one step ahead always. Better prepared than your peers/men in everything you do – sport/ work etc. Competence and persona play a big role in commanding respect
  4. Be Spontaneous: The best way to develop this is to inculcate ‘At the moment’ thinking. Don’t makeup responses earlier itself. Be spontaneous, think and act accordingly. Good common sense is absolutely necessary here.
  5. Maintain an Attitude: Be graceful and practice your etiquettes. Even at home. Because discipline is doing things when no one is looking, know how to carry yourself, know how to treat people like an officer – neither overly friendly nor rude and dress well maintaining some grooming standards. Don’t be lazy, ever.
  6. Increase Stamina: Hit the gym. The intention should not be to develop the body or impress others. But focus on pushing yourself and going that extra mile. This will increase your confidence and stamina tremendously.OLQs
  7. Be an active participant: Be an active participant in whatever activities that take place around you. Be Proactive and Positive. Take part in everything that comes by you in college/workplace etc. Be it technical or extra-curricular or sports or personality development related, participate in all. Try to volunteer yourself for stage decorations etc. In home too, try to have an organized lifestyle.
  8. Liveliness: Certain people are just fun to be around, they bring a smile to your face whenever you meet them, the quality they possess is called liveliness. One should know the art of enjoying life while dealing with its harsh realities. Try to avoid cribbing, griping, worrying and complaining about things which are not under your control. Focus on your work and enjoy every moment of life. Always keep smiling and one day the world would become tired of upsetting you.
  9. The power of Expression: Try to improve your speaking skills that too in an organized manner prioritizing the matter. Regular practice is essential to have a good pronunciation and speaking skills. Speak with men who have good speaking skills.
  10. Social Adaptability: Try to meet and speak with people. Try to shed your shyness. Try to make friendships with the unknown. Always try to initiate talk with someone. Be ready to sacrifice your personal comforts for the interest of the group.

How to build OLQs in a short time and crack SSB interview is mentioned in “Let’s Crack SSB Interview”  and “Breaking the Code of SSB Psychology” books from Amazon.

Apart from these, try to follow these to develop your personality for OLQs:

  • Display an adventurous & bold temperament and willing to take reasonable risks. Display commendable intelligence, imagination, ideas, tact persuasive ability and dynamic quality.
  • Your conclusions should be based on logical reasoning, prove to be sound convincing and your approach should be always constructive, co-operative and result oriented. Adduce good and convincing reasons in support of your arguments and conclusions
  • Be always positive & optimistic.
  • Be a resolute and imaginative and creative person and have the capacity to stand up to any challenges and put your resources to optimum use.
  • Have a bold and pragmatic approach.

9 Things Women Should Know Before Joining the Indian Military

2
9 Things Women Should Know Before Joining the Indian Military

Let’s face it; there is a difference between males and females in the military. Unfortunately, no women would find any helpful information regarding this anywhere on the internet (considering men wouldn’t need it).

So here we bring you some points that could help women assess their lives ahead before joining the military, from the words of serving/retired women soldiers:

These points do not represent my own views but represent points from the experiences of lady cadets at training academies

  1. No Long Hair: All the lady cadets are required to trim their hair as their male counterparts. If you want to keep them long, then you will need to keep it in a tight bun, every day. Turns out, trimming the hair is the best thing you can do while at training.
  1. Prepare to be Physically Tough: You are not opting for a beauty competition here. The first thing the military expects from every soldier is top-notch physical fitness, no matter your gender. Many LCs find it difficult to cope with the physical training. So you better prepare to be so, which brings us to the next point:
  1. Physical Training will not Support you: Basic Training is harder physically for a female than it is for a male (blame your genes). In the military, push-ups are there for every occasion, and they are easier for males (blame testosterone). Sorry ladies, but you gotta struggle in physical training.
  1. Relationships Become Complex: They’re definitely not allowed at basic training. You best not flirt or hook up with anyone at the academy. The military is not the best place if you’re hoping to meet someone.
  1. Your Period is NOT an Excuse: You are going to get your period while at basic training and your drill instructor is not going to care because they have heard every single excuse before about why you cannot possibly do this training. Take a painkiller and suck it up.

Read Reasons on Why a Lady Cadet Left OTA Here

  1. Ditch Personal Grooming: You are given very limited time for personal grooming, but no one really cares what you look like after a week or two. You are too tired and have plenty of time to do your daily chores. And the little time that is left? You will love napping then.
  1. You’ll not serve in Combat Roles: Unlike Air Force, the Army and the Navy don’t allow women to serve in a combat role. However, plans are on to induct women in these services for combat roles too.
  1. You will not always be posted in good places: Just like men, living conditions for you may be tough too. So enjoy nice living conditions while you can because sometimes you won’t get the best accommodations.
  1. The “Female Stereotype” will be there too: Once you get to your units, males will become more conscious of what they say around females to avoid any sexual harassment report. So, understand this: When you enter a room full of males, and they all stop their hooting and laughing as soon as you walk in, it is because you’re female.
