Well, it is not the first test of this missile, the missile was earlier tested in 2012, 2013 and in 2015 the canisterized version of the missile was tested. The missile will be used by Strategic Force Commands and this trail will be conducted to check its full range i.e. 5000 kms. The missile will be of the longest range and most advanced indigenous missile in the Indian defence history. Some key points about AGNI 5 missile are:

  • It is produced by Defence Research and Development Organization.
  • It has a range of 5,000 kms.
  • It is a three-stage missile that can carry 1,000 kgs of warhead.

The missile has 4 previous versions also. AGNI 1, 2, 3 and 4 and all four are operational in the Armed Forces of India. All four previous versions have different range of striking. AGNI 1 is a medium range missile, while AGNI 2, 3 and 4 are intermediate range ballistic missiles. Another version of AGNI i.e. AGNI 6 is under production and will have extended range then AGNI 5. The range of the missile is expected to reach about 10,000 kms, covering almost all neighbouring continents of India.
